IN THE NEWS

Programmers, politicians and advertisers are all eager to tap into the power of the growing Hispanic market. PwC is releasing a report on Monday on consumption habits of the demo  what’s the upshot for media companies? “What’s particularly interesting from our survey is how U.S. Hispanic consumers’ media consumption habits evolve over generations. Our data shows that factors like age, length of time in the U.S. and country of origin all affect these habits in different ways,” Michael Lieberman, Director, PwC, tells Cynopsis. “Given our findings, entertainment and media companies should take more than just one broad strategy to effectively engage the entirety of the diverse population of Hispanic consumers.”

The FCC’s latest proposal to require cable and satellite providers to make programming available through apps could lead to increased piracy, warns the Association of National Advertisers. In a filing, the ANA says the FCC should “assess carefully the relationship of any requirements and search functionality,” as the proposal “threatens to open avenues for piracy of copyrighted material.” A vote for the proposal is scheduled for September 29. In its own response to the FCC set-top proposal, the AFL-CIO says it “seriously undermines important copyright protections.”

Verizon has its own issue with the FCC’s apps proposal. “We understand that MVPDs will be required to provide apps to ‘widely deployed’ platforms,” Verizon said in a letter. “Developing customized apps for device platforms can be costly and resource intensive…. We have every incentive to make our content accessible on popular devices that our customers want to use, but MVPDs cannot be expected to build apps for an indeterminate number of platforms or devices.”

Bad news: Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav said that while the Summer Games did Discovery Channel, down 12 percent year over year, no favors, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC aren’t helping, either. “The three news networks that are generating these massive increased audiences are hurting us disproportionately,” said Zaslav, onstage at the Goldman Sachs Communicopia Conference. Nevertheless, said the exec, “I’m not whining about it…we’re going to have a hell of a year as a company.”

PBS had the biggest haul in the 37th News and Documentary Emmy Awards, with 14 – 7 of which went to Frontline. CBS won the most of any broadcast net, with seven. ABC and CNN nabbed 4 awards each, while NBC took home 2. For a full list of winners, go here.

The Environmental Media Association is honoring actress Shailene Woodley (The Descendents) at its 26th Annual EMA Awards October 22 for her activism on behalf of climate change awareness. The EMA also released its eclectic list of the nominees for this year’s awards, including Discovery’s Racing Extinction, E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Fox’s The Simpsons and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, among others. For additional info, go here.

Conservative leaning Newsmax TV is adding weekday afternoon simulcasts of news talk radio programs, from radio veterans Howie Carr and Joe “Pags” Pagliarulo. “The addition of both these shows not only give us important new voices to our diverse lineup of thoughtful, informative broadcasters, but they also help us expand our broadcasting footprint into the late afternoon hours,” said Newsmax TV CEO Christopher Ruddy.

The way Thomas Gibson tells it to People Magazine, the July 26 dust-up that got him fired from Criminal Minds was overblown. Gibson recalls a confrontation with writer-producer Virgil Williams about a line in a scene. Afterward, Williams entered a room and, claims Gibson, “as he brushed past me, my foot came up and tapped him on the leg….We had some choice words, for which I apologized the next day, and that was it. It was over.” Gibson was given a two-week suspension, then dismissed from the show.
