IN THE NEWS

NBC has partnered with Youtube star Zac King on a 360 video promoting Heroes Reborn, premiering Thursday, September 24 at 8p. King, along with fellow creators Sam Wickert of SoKrispyMedia and Aaron Benitez of VFX Bro, conceived and produced the project featuring the YouTubers one-upping each other on their hero-worthy abilities. Viewers can experience the video in the YouTube app on an Android or iOS device or watch it via a Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox or Opera browser.

Trifecta! ION Television has become the only network to acquire all three Law & Order series. To celebrate, the net is airing all-day marathons of the franchise from Wednesday, September 23 to Friday, September 25. Law & Order airs September 23; Law & Order: Criminal Intent airs September 24; and Law & Order: SVU airs September 25.

For the 16th consecutive year, Working Mother magazine has named Discovery Communications one of the 100 Best Companies for its commitment to progressive workplace programs, including advancement of women, flexibility, child care and paid parental leave. The 100 Best Companies are featured in the October/November issue of the magazine and on workingmother.com.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Starz has inked a series development deal for comic fightfest series Trapped with Mila Kunis‘ Orchard Farm Productions. Kunis will executive produce the project alongside Rob Zombie, who will also direct. The half-hour horror comedy takes places over a single night in the home of a wealthy family under attack by a murderous cult.

Bravo continues its push into scripted programming, adding one-hour pilots True Fiction and My So Called Wife to its development slate. Both dark comedies are from Universal Cable Productions.

National Geographic Channel is continuing its partnership with Scott Free Productions. Teaming for the fourth time, the pair will produce the next movie based on the latest book from Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard, Killing Reagan. The scripted film follows in the footsteps of Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy and Killing Jesus and will air globally on National Geographic Channels in 2016.

Nickelodeon greenlit adventure-filled docu-series I Wanna Be (wt). The show follows Carolina Panthers two-time Pro Bowl quarterback and host Cam Newton as he takes real kids on the ride of their lives to help make their dreams come true. The 20-episode series is slated to air in 2016 and will shoot during the NFL off seasons.

NEW SERIES

Hearst Television is launching a weekly, half-hour interview show hosted by political commentator/author Fernando Espuelas. The program, broadcast from Washington, DC, beginning this fall with plans for national expansion, will air across the Hearst Television group primarily in the Sunday morning news and information block. What’s in store?  “Democracy is loud, complex and endlessly fascinating,” Espuelas tells Cynopsis. "We intend to break through the noise by providing our viewers with fact-driven insights into what’s really going on behind the curtains of political theater.”

RETURNING SERIES

El Rey Network, Mark Burnett and United Artists Media Group have announced a second season of Lucha Libre. The series, which introduces American audiences to the distinctive wrestling techniques of one of Mexico’s most popular sports, will premiere in early 2016.

Classic muscle cars once left for dead are resurrected in Velocity’s Graveyard Carz. The series, hosted by Mark Worman, is back with all-new episodes on Wednesday, October 7 at 9p.

Christina Milian Turned Up is getting a sophomore season on E!. The real-life drama about the actress/singer and her family returns on Tuesday, November 3 at 10p.

Host Alfonso Ribeiro returns with back-to-back episodes of Unwrapped 2.0 on Food Network on Saturday, October 10 at 8p. The the show’s 13-episode season classic childhood treats, the latest candy crazes and flavorful munchies.

COMING UP

Superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli lends his voice to a symphonic salute to the movies in Andrea Bocelli: Cinema, celebrating some of the greatest celluloid songs and scores of all time. John Travolta, Ryan O’Neal, Ali McGraw and Andy Garcia join Bocelli onstage to speak about the films from which the songs derive. The concert special airs on THIRTEEN’s Great Performances on Friday, November 27 at 9p (check local listings) as part of the PBS Arts Fall Festival.

KID STUFF

Disney Channel has optioned Upside-Down Magic, a book series from Scholastic, for development as an original TV show. The story follows the misadventures of Nory, the youngest in a family of elite magicians, who finds herself relegated to a class for misfits after one magical mishap too many.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

The Weinstein Co. has acquired U.S., Canadian, Chinese and Hong Kong rights to upcoming British television miniseries Love, Nina. Starring Helena Bonham Carter the project is based on Nina Stibbe’s memoir of the same name.

Raydar Media secured television and licensing rights to new children series for launch at

MIP Junior and for brand licensing in Europe. The titles include ABC Kids‘ preschool show Sydney Sailboat and BBC children’s channel CBeebies‘ new live-action series Teacup Travels.

DHX Television’s Family Channel has started production on Savvy, a pop culture series for tweens. The show begins shooting in Toronto in early October to debut Spring 2016. DHX Media will distribute the show worldwide.

9 Story Media Group signed multiple deals in advance of MIPJR for the second season of  preschool series Guess How Much I Love You  The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare. Licenses have been secured with NCircle Entertainment, a leading children’s and family home entertainment distributor in North America, and broadcasters Z@pp in the Netherlands, and Minimini in Poland.

UK based distributor Banijay International has picked up worldwide (excluding U.S.) distribution rights for new investigation series The Injustice Files, from Fusion. The show takes viewers behind the headlines to reveal the true stories of people who are fighting for justice.

Production has begun in Toronto, Canada on Baroness von Sketch Show, a single-camera, all female sketch comedy series, created by and starring Canadian comedians Carolyn Taylor, Meredith MacNeill, Aurora Browne and Jennifer Whalen. The show started production this week, with an order of six 30-minute episodes to be broadcast in summer 2016.

RATINGS

Ratings for all of the top five entertainment magazines jumped on Monday with their next-day coverage of Sunday’s Emmy Awards. Entertainment Tonight (3.8/7 primary run metered market average, up 19 percent from its year-ago time period) led the category.  Access Hollywood (2.3/5, up 15 percent), Extra (2.0/4, up 11 percent ), TMZ (1.5/3, up 7 percent ) and The Insider (1.4/3, up 8 percent) followed.

National ratings, covering the session ending September 13, was a week marked by the return of several major talk shows. Live with Kelly & Michael (2.7 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 8 percent from the week before) opened its 28th season, finishing in a tie for first place with perennial talk leader Dr. Phil (2.7, up 8 percent).  Phil, who has been the top talker for the past four years, did not begin his new season until September 14. In third place, Ellen DeGeneres (2.6, up 53 percent) kicked off the first week of her 13th season with Caitlyn Jenner and Hillary Clinton, among others.

Nat Geo WILD’s new series Vet School launched on Saturday, September 19 with 660,000 total viewers P2+ and 206,000 P25-54. It marked the most watched series launch in network history.

Bounce TV’s Premier Boxing Champions  The Next Round on September 18 was a knockout success. The live event and encore reached 1.6 million unique viewers. The premiere telecast averaged 248,000 Households and 335,000 total viewers from 9-11:45p, with a peak audience of 309,000 Households and 433,000 total viewers. The live telecast also delivered 164,000 A 25-54 (+82% over Bounce TV’s Friday primetime average) and 127,000 A18-49 (+57%).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Derek Ferguson has joined Revolt Media as Chief Operating Officer and will partner with Chief Executive Office Keith Clinkscales on the day-to-day management of the enterprise. Ferguson

last served as the Chief Growth Officer of Combs Enterprises, the umbrella organization over Sean “Diddy” Combs’ brands.

Time Inc. Video has promoted two key employees. Mike Beck, who produced some of company’s first digital series, has been named Senior Executive Producer, Development and Production. Ian Orefice, a former executive producer, has been upped to Senior Executive Producer, Original and Current Programming.

Screen Engine/ASI has announced three new additions to their executive ranks. Christina Parish, formerly of Nielsen Content, joins the company as Senior Vice President, Client Services for the television division. Sylvia Ortiz-Moscato, who last served as Vice President of the Multicultural division at Ipsos MediaCT, has been named Vice President, Research Solutions. Laura Zilli joins as Vice President of Research Strategies from Capstone Global Marketing & Research Group, where she was Chief Marketing Analyst.
