IN THE NEWS

MGM has acquired a 55 percent interest in Mark Burnett, Roma Downey and Hearst Entertainment One’s Three Media and faith and family unit LightWorkers Media, creating a new venture, United Artists Media Group. The company’s aim: to develop, produce and finance premium content across all platforms, and develop an over the top channel for faith-based viewers. The deal includes all of Burnett’s interest in Survivor, Shark Tank, The Bible, among other hits. Burnett takes the role of CEO of UAMG, while Downey will serve as president of LightWorkers Media.

Al Jazeera America responded to the lawsuit filed by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt over $65 million left in an escrow account after AJA’s purchase of Current TV in January 2013. The news net held onto the funds because of costs including legal fees and claims from pay-TV distributors and other third parties, said the filing.

An October 5 walk-a-thon in Atlanta honoring camera assistant Sarah Jones, who died in an on-set accident while working on the film Midnight Rider, was organized by cast and crew from CW’s The Originals and The Vampire Diaries. Jones, a crew member on Diaries, died February 20 at age 27; proceeds from the walk will go to the Sarah Jones Film Foundation.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

AMC joins Channel 4 and Kudos to partner on production for sci-fi series Humans, about a family that purchases a life-like robotic servant, with chilling consequences. The eight-episode series, adapted from Swedish series Real Humans, was originally a co-production with Xbox Entertainment Studios, until Microsoft announced plans to close XES. ”I am proud ofthe work we have done shepherding Humans to this point, as well as facilitating and ensuring a smooth transition for our friends at Kudos/Shine and Channel 4,” said XES president Nancy Tellem. Filming starts this fall, for broadcast on AMC and UK’s Channel 4 in 2015.

Hulu gave a straight-to-series order for event series 11/22/63, from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, best-selling author Stephen King and exec producer/writer Bridget Carpenter and Warner Bros. Television. Based on the 2011 novel by King, the thriller focuses on an English teacher who travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

John Krasinski (The Office) put on his producer hat to sell two comedy projects to NBC. One focuses on a former law student who switches to a career in garbage collection; the other centers on an out-of-work ad executive who launches his own agency from his garage. Krasinki’s Sunday Night Productions is under an overall deal with Universal Television; he and Allyson Seeger will exec produce both shows.

Production has commenced in Atlanta for season two of SundanceTV’s The Red Road, with Wes Studi (Hell on Wheels) added to the cast as tribal chief Levi. Drama returns mid-2015.

Filmmaker Michael Apted (56 Up) launched a campaign on Indiegogo to fund the third chapter in his Married in America documentary film series, exploring the marriages through the years of nine couples. A long-term project “is much harder today in the TV business because agendas keep changing,” acknowledged Apted, now a fan of crowdfunding. “I’m very taken with it,” he said. “For an audience, that’s an empowering experience.”
