ADVERTISING & BRANDS

With Donald Trump spending significantly less than anticipated on political ads, Wells Fargo Securities’ Marci Ryvicker revised her forecast for political spending down 5 percent from 2012, to $2.65 billion, versus up 18 percent. “While there is still hope, the placement of Trump dollars is impossible to predict,” said Ryvicker. “Trump has been spending, but not enough for a lot of our companies.”

That said, Nexstar Broadcasting said it has already reached 2/3 of its political ad dollars target, when half of political ads usually land between October 1 and Election Day. CEO Perry Sook told Reuters the group’s station money comes from senate and gubernatorial races, and he’s not altering his $100 million goal.

Ad loads per hour rose 2.4 percent in August, reported Brian Wieser, senior research analyst at Pivotal Research Group. Viacom had the highest ad load, at 15.0 minutes, while CBS had the lowest average, with 7.4 minutes.

The first debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump could cost ESPN’s Monday Night Football 15-20 percent in viewership versus last year’s average, ad buyers told the Wall Street Journal. The made-for-TV matchup will draw up to 50 percent more viewers than the 67 million people who tuned in to watch President Barack Obama first spar wit Mitt Romney in 2012, estimate buyers.
