IN THE NEWS

Shonda Rimes lashed out on Twitter Friday, taking New York Times writer Alessandra Stanley to task for suggesting the prolific exec producer (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy) should title her autobiography “How to Get Away with Being an Angry Black Woman.” One of Rimes’ posts pointed out that in fact a white male, Pete Nowalk, is the creator of the upcoming drama, How to Get Away with Murder (debuting Thursday, September 25 at 10p) that Stanley was reviewing. Cast members including Scandal’s Kerry Washington and Joshua Malina jumped in to defend their boss; Stanley said the point of her piece was to praise Rimes for “pushing back so successfully” against the stereotype.

Colin Farrell has confirmed he will star in season two of HBO‘s True Detective. "I’m doing the second series. I’m so excited," the Saving Mr. Banks star told Irish Newspaper the Sunday World. "I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot."

The National Latino Media Council isn’t wowed with Latino representation on the Big Four. Based on inclusion in front of and behind the cameras, as well as commitment to diversity, NBC led the pack with a “Mediocre/Good” grade from the group; ABC, CBS and Fox efforts were all labeled “Mediocre.” Noting bright spots on each network, NLMC chair Esteban Torres nevertheless concluded, “It is clear there is a lot of room for improvement across the board.”

TruTV and Tumblr are teaming to help viewers of upcoming series Hack My Life share their own shortcuts and tips. The best hacks posted on hackmylifetrutv.tumblr.com will be featured on the show, launching in January. “By integrating Tumblr users into this series, we’re turning Hack My Life into a truly multi-platform experience,” said truTV SVP of marketing and digital Puja Vohra.

The Screens Entertainment Association launched last week, providing membership to CMOs, CEOs, advertising and PR execs, and heads of entertainment organizations. What’s it about? “We will integrate the many communities that are focused on screened entertainment and be the link between them,” SEAboard member and Entertainment Media Ventures president Sandy Climan tells Cynopsis.“Everyone is collectively facing the exciting reality of a multi-screen universe and we can better serve all audiences by ensuring that there is an optimal understanding of the power of this integration and how it can be put into action tangibly now and in the future.”

ASPiRE is partnering with the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities as part of its efforts to promote excellence in education. “Our partnership with ASPiRE serves as a model for how government and business leaders can collaborate to uplift college students through unique mentioning and networking opportunities,” said Ivory A. Toldson, deputy director, WHIHBCUs.

As the NFL struggled to deal with domestic violence scandals, P&G on Friday nixed a breast cancer awareness promotion with its Crest brand and the league. While P&G said it remained committed to a $100,000 donation to the American Cancer Society and would participate in activities drawing attention to the cause, football players will not be offered pink mouth guards as part of the campaign. “The brand has decided to cancel on-field activation with NFL teams,” said the consumer goods giant.
