IN THE NEWS

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said the company is “experimenting” with skinny bundles but they are “not a majority behavior.” Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference yesterday in NY, Roberts said Comcast will focus on continuing to make the bundle more attractive. “I don’t know that it’s really what people want,” he said. “There are certainly some who want to pay less, but I don’t know too many programmers saying they want to go a la carte and ‘it works for my business.’” Addressing the integration of Netflix into the X1 platform beginning this week, Roberts said he and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings “didn’t see eye-to-eye on everything but… found a way to think for the consumer.” He said the Netflix service will be across the Comcast X1 footprint by Thanksgiving.

Also speaking at Goldman Sachs’ Communacopia yesterday, Les Moonves, chairman and chief executive of CBS Corp., outlined the company’s top drivers as global expansion and digital services including CBS All Access and Showtime Now, noting it was very possible CBS would best its 8 million subscriber target for OTT services by 2020. He also touted the network’s partnership with Netflix, citing the fact that the streaming service nabbed rights to its new Star Trek series. Moonves also said political advertising is “good,” though Donald Trump is spending less than expected.

FX gave season 2 renewals to its comedy series Donald Glover’s Atlanta and Pamela Adlon-starring Better Things. Each of the newcomers got a 10-episode order for a second season, landing them rare early renewals for the network.

New talk show TD Jakes premiered this week on OWN, following its syndication launch. Now is the perfect time for the talker starring the Oprah Show alum, suggests Stephanie Drachkovitch. "We believe he has a voice of hope and inspiration our country can use," says the president and co-founder of44 Blue Productions, "whether you’re a young single mother, a family struggling to make ends meet, or a young person looking for a purpose." For more from Drachkovitch on the new talk show entry, see the latest Cynsiders.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Nickelodeon has begun production on new original TV movie Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. To star Breanna Yde (Nick’s School of Rock) and Casey Simpson (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn), Russell Roberts (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) and newcomers AJ Rivera and Klarke Pipkin, the movie will premiere in 2017 and is based on Chris Grabenstein’s children’s book.

Canada-based production house Media Ranch signed an exclusive worldwide linear TV and digital rights deal to develop a scripted comedy series based on Steel Panther, the US comedy glam-rock band that’s had a string of comedy albums and reach 2 million fans per week on social media.

Scottish production company Synchronicity Films nabbed film and TV rights to His Bloody Project, Graeme Macrae Burnet’s period crime thriller that’s been shortlisted for the UK’s Man Booker Prize this year, for development as a series.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Coral360’s digital reality series Los Cowboys is riding on to the television airwaves. The series, which launched on Univision.com, premieres tonight (September 21) on Galavision at 10:30p. Los Cowboys is an original docuseries featuring bicultural Latinos, with storylines focused on issues familiar to multicultural, multigenerational families. This marks the first Hispanic digital-first series to air on Galavision.

TLC’s new series Sweet 15: Quinceanera, debuting Tuesday, September 27, celebrates the traditional rite of passage in a Latina’s life. While cultural traditions like the father daughter dance still remain prevalent, new American traditions are becoming a staple, including over-the-top photo shoots and numerous mid-party outfit changes, and music videos that rival those of the biggest teen pop sensations.

CNBC’s original primetime series Make Me A Millionaire Inventor returns for season 2 on Thursday, October 6 at 10p with eight new one-hour eps. Engineering expert hosts Deanne Bell and George Zaidan in each episode scour the country looking for amazing ideas they’re convinced can make big money. They’ll track down the inventors and give them a second chance to bring their ideas and dreams to life.

American Heroes Channel will bring back Ancient Assassins on Saturday, October 8 at 10p. The series showcases the fatal tactics and treacherous skillset of the most feared assassins, elite units and mercenaries throughout time, from Ancient Greece to Viking hordes.

COMING UP

Red Bull TV original series The Horn, featuring the stories behind the Air Zermatt team who risk their lives to save others on the cliff of the Matterhorn, will be available globally on Demand on Red Bull TV beginning October 17. Produced by Original Media, the six-part original docuseries is shot through the first responders’ eyes. “The Horn is a fascinating series in that it chronicles some of the most harrowing and frightening rescues to occur on the Matterhorn, while also exposing its breathtaking and unparalleled beauty,” Glenda Hersh, co-president/co-CEO of Original media and exec producer of the series, tells Cynopsis. “The dichotomy makes The Horn one of most compelling and emotional series that Original Media has ever produced.”

Velocity and Discovery Channel are revving their engines to again deliver Barrett-Jackson Live, 24 hours of live automotive action during the 9th annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction from Thursday, October 13 through Saturday, October 15. Coverage will feature rare vehicles including supercars, American muscle cars, hot rods and custom cars. Barrett-Jackson Live will premiere internationally across Discovery Communications networks: Velocity Canada, Discovery Turbo U.K., Discovery Canada, Discovery U.K. and Discovery en Espanol.

CASTING

Starz announced two new cast appointments for the upcoming third season of Outlander. John Bell (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) will play the role of Young Ian in the 18th century, and Wil Johnson (Waking the Dead) will play Claire’s friend and medical colleague Joe Abernathy in 20th century Boston.

Ravi Patel (Grandfathered) will guest on the upcoming 13th season of ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy as a nurse at the hospital. Patel is scheduled for one episode, with a possibility for more.

DISTRIBUTION

AT&T and Turner renewed their long-term multiplatform distribution agreement. The renewal expands the companies’ relationship to include carriage of Turner’s portfolio of networks on AT&T’s upcoming DirecTV Now service, as well as on AT&T U-verse and the DIRECTV satellite TV platform. DirecTVNow will launch in Q4 and offer customers more than 100 channels.

Guess My Age, the game show from Vivendi Entertainment in association with Tocco, is under option in 13 additional countries, including the US. The show is already on the air in France and Germany.

RESEARCH

A majority of millennial cord-nevers – adult broadband users between the ages of 20 and 35 that have never signed up for a legacy pay-TV service – perceive subscription streaming services satisfy their video needs, according to new research from The Diffusion Group. In fact, of the 81 percent of MCNs who use SVOD, more than nine in 10 believe the services are sufficient to meet their video needs. Also according to TDG data, three-fourths of MCNs believe SVOD services play a key role in their decision to forgo legacy pay-TV, and, two-thirds of MCNs rank this factor as very relevant in this decision, with half ranking it as extremely relevant.

KID STUFF

Holding the title of TV’s longest-running children’s animated series, Arthur kicks off season 20 on PBS Kids on October 10, with new episodes that give fans a glimpse into the past, present, and future of the characters. Some anniversary stats: Arthur is currently broadcast in more than 80 countries and draws 7 million viewers per month. The series has had seven Emmy wins and recorded 161 million website visits since 2008.

DIGITAL DOINGS

ABC News and Facebook are extending their relationship to bring live coverage of the 2016 general election debates. During the conventions, the partnership drew more than 28 million video views across ABC News’ Facebook pages. Throughout each debate day, ABC News’ curated Facebook feed will offer live streams from around the debate host cities, inside the spin room and from watch parties, plus commentary from ABC News correspondents. ABC News will incorporate viewers’ comments in the Facebook Live coverage.
