NBCU chairman Ted Harbert will leave the company on October 14, and he leaves a ripple effect of executive changes in his wake. NBCU CEO Steve Burke, with whom Harbert has close ties, announced the departure in a company memo. The former chief of E!, Harbert in recent years has had oversight for ad sales, stations and domestic TV distribution. Noting “the businesses Ted oversees are firing on all cylinders and he is ready to look for his next challenge,” Burke in his memo said four executives will take over the various aspects of Harbet’s role at NBCU: Mark Lazarus will become chairman of NBC Broadcasting and Sports; George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy of NBC Entertainment will assume responsibility for NBC’s first-run syndication business; and Jeff Bader will be responsible for the Broadcast Research group. Additionally, Kevin MacLellan will become chairman of global distribution and international, adding oversight of Domestic Television and New Media Distribution. Maggie McLean Suniewick will segue to newly created role of president of NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises, with Ron Lamprecht, Lori Conkling and Evan Shapiro joining her team. Harbert told colleagues in a memo that he wants to stay on to oversee the launch of NBCU’s new syndicated talk show featuring Harry Connick Jr.
