Pete Davidson has been added to Saturday Night Live’s season 40 roster as a featured player. The 20-year-old has appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. SNL writer Mike O’Brien, who moved to a spot in front of the camera season last season, returns to his writing post. Chris Pratt-hosted season premiere airs September 27 on NBC.

IN THE NEWS

The news anchor seat for the weekend edition of NBC’s Today will be filled by Sheinelle Jones. The spot opened up after Jenna Wolfe’s move to the morning show’s new Fitness and Lifestyle correspondent slot. Jones was most recently co-host of Fox’s local Good Day Philadelphia.

Add U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to celebs sharing mobile videos for Cartoon Network’s “Stop Bullying: Speak Up” week, launching Monday, September 29 to kick of National Bullying Prevention Month. The officials shared their videos at www.StopBullyingSpeakUp.com.

Bryce Dion, the COPS audio technician struck and killed in a shoot-out during production in August in Omaha, NE will be honored with a clips special featuring his work on Saturday, September 20 at 8p on Spike TV.  “Bryce had a passion for life and his work, and was always the first one to help anyone in need. He will best be remembered for a smile that never faded,” said exec producers Morgan and John Langley of Langley Productions.

POV is launching six interactive shorts delving into contemporary issues with new technologies that “elevate nonfiction content into a creative art form,” said Adnaan Wasey, executive producer of POV Digital. Four of the projects were created by alumni of a POV Hackathon, a laboratory series providing mentoring for nonfiction media makers.

BBC World News tech program BBC Click is launching a series of short films designed for transmission via social media. The one- to two- minute pieces will be distributed weekly to Click’s 2.35million Twitter followers via @bbcclick, and be available on the show’s You Tube channel, going live this week.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Jimmy Kimmel sold a pilot script to ABC through ABC Studios, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Kimmel will write the pilot, and produce with pal Carson Daly (Today). Also onboard: exec producer Dan Fogelman (The Neighbors).

Gene Simmons has a new television project in the works, and this time the KISS rocker is melding music with reality TV. The star of A&E’s Gene Simmons Family Jewels (2006-2012) and AMC’s 4th and Loud (Tuesdays at 10p) is partnering with Sierra/Engine Television to launch talent competition Coliseum at Mipcom. Contestants will form bands, to be mentored by Simmons and judged by music industry vets.

A series following the owner of a Seattle-based T-shirt company on the hunt for vintage inspiration is in production for Great American Country. The untitled show, slated for a 2015 premiere, “is a great mix of reverent and hip,” said Steven Lerner, SVP of programming and development for Great American Country, HGTV and DIY.

Chris Brown takes over multi-platform video and music net Music Choice Play today. Fans decide which of the recording artist’s videos will air, and You & A, at 7:30p, will focus on his upcoming sixth album, “X.” Brown is the number one artist on Music Choice Video On Demand since its 2005 launch.

In a special edition of AMERICA with Jorge Ramos tonight, the Fusion anchor explores the food, music and culture of an island that’s undergone a dramatic population shift. “Forbidden Puerto Rico” airs at 10p.

Music doc Genesis: Sum of the Parts reunites the Grammy-winning group for personal accounts of their heady careers, colored by archive material and rare performance footage, on Showtime Friday, October 10 at 8p.

RETURNING SERIES

Out-of-control felines are the focus of Animal Planet’s My Cat from Hell, back with seven new eps Saturday, October 11 at 8p. Animal behaviorist Jackson Galaxy deals with the likes of a bloodthirsty cat in Austin that attacks its owner’s clients in the docu-series from Eyeworks USA.

Action sports athletes return to perform heart-stopping stunts in season four of MTV2’s Nitro Circus Live on Wednesday, October 8 at 11p. Can’t wait? Nitro Circus: The Movie makes its television premiere on the net one week before, at 11p.

The season three opener of WE tv reality show Kendra On Top begins with Hugh Hefner ex Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett dealing with the discovery that her husband, former NFL player Hank Baskett, has been accused of having a sexual encounter with a transsexual model. The show premieres October 3 at 10p (show moves to its regular time slot 9p the following week).

AHC’s America: Fact vs. Fiction launches its sophomore season Tuesday, October 7 at 10p, with startling facts about the California gold rush and the stock market crash of 1929. Stick around for a back-to-back 10:30p ep and find out how Davy Crockett really died.

With season one averaging .6 among A18-49 and 1 million total viewers, VH1 renewed Dating Naked for another round of daring reality romance. “The show is funny, engaging and it actually works,” said Susan Levison, the net’s EVP, original programming and production, “we’ve helped six couples find love this season.” Proof:  special Dating Naked: The Wedding airs Thursday, September 18 at 9p.

CASTING

Midseason CBS spin-off CSI: Cyber has cast Luke Perry (Beverly Hills, 90210) as a former FBI agent. Patricia Arquette (Medium) stars in the procedural.

Scott Glenn (The Leftovers) is onboard Netflix and Marvel comic book adaptation Daredevil as the vigilante’s mentor. Charlie Cox plays Matt Murdock.

Amanda Pays will play Dr. Tina McGee on CW’s The Flash, the same role she had in the 1990-91 CBS version. John Wesley Shipp, who played the superhero back then, has the role his former character’s father. Series premieres Tuesday, October 7 at 8p.

SYNDICATION

Celebrity Name Game is preparing for its Monday, September 22 launch by adding celeb guests including Mel B., Darrin Crisss, Sheryl Crow and Tiffani Thiessen to a lineup that already boasts Tom Arnold, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin McHale, Mena Suvari and show producers Courteney Cox and David Arquette. Game show, hosted by Craig Ferguson, tasks stars with competing to identify famous names based on improvised clues.

Viewers of Friends on local stations between now and September 26 will have a chance to win the “Friends Flyaway to New York Sweepstakes.” Prizes include a trip to NYC and 10 bags of Eight O’Clock Coffee, featuring limited-edition Central Perk roast to celebrate the sitcom’s 20th anniversary, as well as a visit to the replica Central Perk pop-up store. BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Brands said 60 percent of their online video ad spending was programmatic in Adap.tv’s “2014 U.S. State of the Video Industry” report. And according to data gleaned from 350 media and marketing professionals surveyed, “Brand budgets for programmatic TV buying are predominantly coming from traditional TV spending, not from digital or incremental spending.” In addition, “Another big trend we’re keeping a close eye on is the advent of data-driven or programmatic TV…with brands ahead of this trend at 60 percent, stating they will apply programmatic techniques to broadcast TV in the coming year,” Adap.tv and One by AOL CEO Toby Gabriner told Cynopsis.

RATINGS

Up against Sunday Night Football, ABC’s Miss America pageant drew 6.7 million viewers and a 1.5 rating/4 share from 9p-11p, growing to 7.6 million viewers and 1.7/5 during its final half hour, according to Nielsen. (Congrats, Miss New York!) Last year’s show averaged 8.6 million viewers and earned a 2.0/5 rating.

Syfy zombie drama Z Nation premiered Friday to 1.6 million total viewers and 695,000 among A18-49, the most-watched show on cable at 10p, and number two in the demo.

The news keeps getting better for the season seven premiere of FX’s Sons of Anarchy. The primary telecast delivered 9.25 million total viewers and 6.1 million A18-49; the premiere telecast and encore runs added up to 10.62 million viewers and 6.92 million in the demo. The biker drama opener was the most-watched program in the net’s history and cable’s number two scripted series premiere after AMC’s Walking Dead.
