STX Entertainment is looking to up their digital game. And the increasingly powerful film and TV production studio and distributor, which was founded just last year, is doing so at the expense of Yahoo. Kathy Savitt, who serves as Yahoo’s CMO (not to mention manager of its media division), is leaving the Internet company to oversee STX’s digital content strategy as President of Digital. “This was an incredibly important step for us in going digital,” said STX President Sophie Watts. Savitt will assume her new role next month.

Facebook Mentions, the public engagement app used by the Verified Page admins of brands and celebs, will now be available to Verified Profiles as well. Some have noted that this is particularly significant for journalists.  Mentions – which includes “Live,” a Periscope-like livestreaming feature – could allow journos to feel far more comfortable posting work-related videos and article links. The reason: Mentions will let them direct posts solely to their followers. In other words, no more clogging their personal friends’ News Feeds with self-promotion.

Awards tend to find their way into Taylor Swift’s possession. The musician took home a Creative Arts Emmy for Original Interactive Program, for AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience, a free interactive app that allowed users to explore the mansion from her Blank Space music video.

In other Emmy news, Bravo took home the Multiplatform Storytelling award for The Singles Project. In addition to its run on linear TV, the docu-series aired content on Bravotv.com and on social media. Meanwhile, multiplatform YouTube series Emma Approved won the award for Interactive Programming. The series, an update of Jane Austen’s Emma for the vlogger generation, was created by well-known transmedia storyteller Bernie Su.

OTT + SVOD

Rooster Teeth’s mobile offerings just became more appealing to subscribers – or as the company calls them, sponsors. The sci-fi-and-gaming-oriented production studio, now owned by multichannel YouTube network Fullscreen, has launched video apps for iOS and Android. The apps improve on the studio’s previous foray into mobile: Rooster Teeth’s 2014 app allowed users to stream content, but didn’t provide subscribers with the exclusive programming available on the studio’s website. The new apps featuring premium content available exclusively to sponsors. One such bit of premium content: The gaming-centric Let’s Play Live: The Documentary, premiering September 14.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

How do you make the transition from digital to linear? It helps if you have over 1.5 million subscribers. Actor/musician Chester See is jumping from YouTube to ABC Family. He’ll star in Over the Top, a dramedy about an aspiring musician who turns to YouTube. Not to be overly speculative, but the show might just be based on See’s real life.

The future is…print? Digital production studio New Form Digital has looked to a book for inspiration, optioning Mitchell Kriegman’s 2014 YA novel Being Audrey Hepburn. (Kriegman is most famous for creating the classic Nickelodeon series Clarissa Explains It All, which ran in the early ‘90s.) The studio intends to adapt the book into a 12-part digital series, slated to debut in 2016.

Jukin Media, the multi-platform media company known for its vast collection of viral videos, is heading abroad. The company has partnered with the international branch of dick clark productions to bring a comedic clip show to linear TV in the UK. Using family friendly viral clips from Jukin’s library, Now That’s What I Call Funny! is slated to run on Viacom International’s Channel 5 this fall.

Multiscreen video specialist Clearleap has partnered with commerce and billing company Zuora. According to the companies, their new platform leverages data to provide prospective and current OTT content providers with insight into subscriber behavior.

APPS + GAMES

When you get the high score, people notice. Gaming analytics startup Whally launched a new platform to help game publishers identify gamers who spend the most time and money playing. And the platform does so by analyzing publicly available high scores from more than 190,000 iOS games. “Mobile gaming market intelligence has been dominated by app store ranking and number of installs or downloads,” said Fred Thuard, Whally’s founder. “[P]ublic data on scoring are a serious way to understand player engagement and track user behavior daily.” Whally recently secured seed funding from investors London Venture Partners, Inveready, and Kima Ventures.

Ahead of last night’s premiere of music-based reality series La Banda, Univision launched the interactive Connecta app. Among other features, the app provides original premium content and allows users to offer opinions on the performances of contestants. In addition, social media features will include live trivia and behind-the-scenes content on Snapchat, as well as GIFs and backstage video via Periscope and Facebook.

In conjunction with Friday’s premiere of linear series Z Nation, Syfy released Find Murphy, an online first-person adventure game. Find Murphy features live-action performances from the show’s cast members. It’s available on Syfy.com.

DIGITAL CONTENT CREATORS

16-year-old YouTube star Anthony “Lohanthony” Quintal has released a new curated album. Called Landscapes, the 12-track release is populated by various artists Quintal admires, including Boombox Cartel and Aurora. Landscapes is available on iTunes and Google Play.

Popular YouTube film pundit Grace Randolph has signed on with talent management and brand development company Haber Entertainment. Randolph’s YouTube channel, Beyond the Trailer, has over 430,000 subscribers.

There’s no question YouTube and the like are altering the shape of kids’ programming. “The audience is looking for characters that feel more real and authentic to them, especially since the stars they love are real people online,” Adam Bonnett, EVP, Original Programming, Disney Channels Worldwide, tells Cynopsis. “The original title of K.C. Undercover was Superawesome Katy and she was great at everything and didn’t feel like a real teenager. Zendaya does a fantastic job of making K.C. feel like a real, relatable teenager who just happens to be a great spy.”  Staying ahead of the curve helped Bonnett land a Cynopsis Content Leadership Award, to be presented at the  Cynopsis Kids !magination Awards breakfast on Friday, September 18th. Condé Nast Entertainment, Condé Nast’s branded video division, added two new execs. Will Misselbrook will be Head of Branded Entertainment, and Eden Gorcey will serve as Head of Branded Content, Digital Sales, and Strategy. Misselbrook previously served as VP and Director of Global Content Development for Coach. Gorcey worked at Starcom MediaVest Group head of MediaVest Digital Partnerships & Content Solutions.

Reelio, an influencer marketing platform that specializes in connecting brands with popular digital content creators, has hired Dave Dickman as President. Dickman previously served as Global Head of Sales for iAd, Apple’s in-app advertising platform.

Douglas Parker has joined Time Inc. The digital designer was named Executive Creative Director, UX and Visual Design for People and Entertainment Weekly’s digital entertainment group. Previously, Parker served as Digital Creative Director for Bravo and Oxygen. He officially begins his new role today.
