CYNOPSIS
09.13.16

Good morning. It’s Tuesday September 13, 2016, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
AXS TV: The Big Interview With Dan Rather at 8p
Bounce TV: Ed Gordon at 10p
Discovery: Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove at 9p, Taking Fire at 10p
OWN: If Loving You Is Wrong at 9p
PBS: The Contenders – 16 for ’16 at 8p

Tonight’s Finale:
NBC: Better Late Than Never at 10p

IN THE NEWS

CBS has made some adjustments to its fall premiere week schedule. Miniseries The Case Of: JonBenet Ramsey will be trimmed from six to four hours, airing Sunday, September 18 and Monday, September 19. NCIS: Los Angeles now starts on its new night, Sunday, on September 25, following an NFL double-header, replacing what was to be the third night of the JonBenet Ramsey event.

American Ninja Warrior won a sixth season renewal from NBC, with encore presentations on Esquire Network, where it will enter season 9. Ahead of its finale last night, the summer series was averaging a 2.1 rating among A18-49 and 7.2 million, for its most-watched season in total viewers.

The Directors Guild of America noted “a lack of real progress by employers in this industry, plain and simple,” in its study of women and minority TV directors during the 2015-16 season. Women directed 17 percent of all episodes, inching up from 16 percent, while ethnic minorities helmed 19 percent of episodes, up from 18 percent. “There’s a long road ahead for true change to be realized – because for that to happen, the pipeline will need to change at the point of entry,” said DGA president Paris Barclay.

The week after Matt Lauer was criticized for being too easy on GOP candidate Donald Trump in an NBC town hall discussion, Trump had a suggestion for the upcoming debates. With calls increasing for more fact-checking, “I think we should have a debate with no moderator, just Hillary and I sitting there talking,” Trump told CNBC’s Squawk Box on Monday. Predicting future moderators will be tougher on him because of the Lauer backlash, Trump said, “I think the system is being rigged so it’s going to be a very unfair debate.” Good luck to NBC’s Lester Holt, first up on September 26.

Toby Willis, patriarch of TLC reality show The Willis Family, was arrested and charged with child rape after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looked into an alleged encounter Willis had about 12 years ago. TLC said it hadn’t renewed the show, and no episodes have aired since April.

Today Time Inc. launched a free, ad-supported OTT platform, the People/Entertainment Weekly Network, offering viewers celebrity/human interest content including talk shows, awards shows, festivals and celebrity interviews. Why make the leap? “If you are a content provider and you think an audience exists for what you are creating then this is a great opportunity to go directly to your consumer,” says network GM Susanne Mei in the latest Cynsiders. “If you’re not in it – you can’t take advantage of the of the opportunities that will come with the current rapid pace of change in the video space.” Mei will have more insights on advertising and distribution strategies, as well as Time Inc.’s “fairly groundbreaking” approach to making the OTT move, as a presenter at the September Cynopsis webinar. You’ll find more info here.

In addition to Mikey Day, who been writing for the show, Saturday Night Live has added Alex Moffat and Melissa Villasenor as featured players. Season 42 bows October 1 on NBC.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Tim Minear (American Horror Story) will serve as co-showrunner for upcoming Ryan Murphy anthology series Feud. “I’ve loved working with Tim since the very first season of American Horror Story and he’s been the perfect partner on Feud,” said Murphy.“I’m as excited about this project as any I’ve ever done.” Production begins this fall for a 2017 premiere.

Canadian filmmaker Sara St. Onge will direct season two of AT&T/eOne series You me Her. Filming begins this month in Vancouver.

Production is underway for Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods. Among the roads host Andrew Zimmern will travel in his search for culinary curiosities are Route 66 and the Pacific Coast Highway.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Thirty men and women with no military background will be put through intense physical and mental challenges by veterans of the Navy SEALs, Green Berets and Army Rangers in History’s The Selection: Special Operations Experiment. Eight episode unscripted series from exec producer Peter Berg (Lone Survivor) premieres Thursday, December 15 at 10p.

TruTV’s Jon Glaser Loves Gear launches Wednesday, October 26 at 10p with back-to-back episodes. In the hybrid comedy, Glaser attempts to make a docu-series about gear. Janeane Garofalo (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp) is among the season’s diverse slate of guest stars. A sneak peek will air Tuesday, October 25 at 11p after The Adam Ruins Everything Election Special.

BBC America’s The Living and the Dead, about a couple hell-bent on bringing modern ideas to an ancient rural community, premieres Thursday, October 27 at 9p. The entire limited series will be available the following day to stream on the BBC America App and BBCAmerica.com.

Deadly Doctors premieres on ID Saturday, September 24 at 9p. The new series explores physicians and nurses who use their power to harm rather than heal.

Kapow! The original 1966-1968 Batman series will air in Spanish on NBCUniversal Spanish-language multicast net TeleXitos, starting Saturday, September 17 at 1p.

COMING UP

Antenna TV, Tribune Broadcasting’s multicast entertainment net, is adding nine new programs in 2017. Becker, What’s Happening!! and My Two Dads debut in January, followed later in the year by Alice, Growing Pains, 227, The Hogan Family, Head of the Class and Murphy Brown. Adding more old faves sounds like a no brainer. “In the five years since Antenna TV has launched there has been a great response from viewers enjoying the classic programming, and from stations seeing an increase in revenue,” said Sean Compton, president strategic programming and acquisitions, Tribune Broadcasting.

Tonight’s series premiere of Bounce TV’s Ed Gordon features an interview with the five Mothers of the Movement, African-American women whose children have been shot. The net’s first news magazine show will include investigative pieces, celebrity profiles, current event segments and human interest stories.

Presidential candidate Donald Trump will make his third visit to The Tonight Show on Thursday, September 15. The last time Trump was Jimmy Fallon’s guest was in January. As previously announced, Hillary Clinton will appear on the show on Monday, September 19.

El Rey Network founder and chairman Robert Rodriguez will talk with filmmakers Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Walking Dead) and Jon Favreau (Elf) for a two-hour special The Director’s Chair on Saturday, September 25 at 8p. Sample from Darabont: “I spent seven years walking into offices trying to convince people that yes, a zombie show could be successful.”

Pivot honors International Day of the Girl of Tuesday, October 11 with the premiere of Driving with Selvi at 8:30p. The film depicts a girl in an abusive marriage who runs away and becomes India’s first female taxi driver.

Nonprofit public broadcast and digital network KCETLink Media Group announced the U.S. television broadcast debut of Prisoners of War (original title: Hatufim), the Israeli series upon which Showtime drama Homeland is based. Prisoners premieres Monday, October 24 at 10p on Link TV.

CASTING

Jessica Lowe (Wrecked), Kurt Fuller (The Good Wife), Chris Parnell (Saturday Night Live) and Kerri Kenney (Love) will guest on truTV pilot Small Victories, focuses on a disbarred lawyer working as a barista.

ADVERTISING

Zenith has a rosier forecast for ad spend than it did in June, with US growth estimated at 4.4 percent, up from a 3.8 percent prediction. US network television spending is expected to rise 1 percent, versus a 5 percent decline last year, due to dollars doled out by pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods companies, and a strong upfront.

Ad rates for this season’s NFL games are at an all-time high, reports AdAge. Marketers are paying close to $720,000 per unit for NBC’s Sunday Night Football, and $560,000 per 30-second spot for Thursday night games. Fox is reportedly getting about $740,000 per :30 for late afternoon games, while CBS is grabbing around $685,000.

President of advertising sales for Fox Networks Group Toby Byrne is leaving to “explore other opportunities.” Byrne joined Fox in 1996, rising to ad sales president in 2014. “Our exceptional results in this year’s upfront attest to Toby’s expertise, business abilities and personal integrity,” said FNG president and COO Randy Freer, who will oversee ad revenue during the search for a successor. Handling Byrne’s responsibilities will be EVP of ad sales Bruce Lefkowtiz , EVP of global partnerships Danielle Maged and president of advance advertising products Joe Marchese.

SYNDICATION

Wheel of Fortune heads into season 34 with “Teacher’s Week,” as educators spin the wheel and solve puzzles. Speaking of, the season will mark the first regular appearance of the “Crossword Puzzle Round,” which was tested at the end of last season.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Keith Olbermann makes a comeback (again) at GQ, on a bi-weekly web series. The Closer with Keith Olbermann makes its debut today. Olbermann, who left ESPN last year, has also put in time at MSNBC, CNN, and Fox Sports.

As cable companies toy with various usage-based pricing policies, Netflix, a natural opponent of ISP policies that limit data usage, asked the FCC to consider regulating usage-based pricing and data caps by Internet service providers. “Data caps (especially low data caps) and usage based pricing discourage a consumer’s consumption of broadband, and may impede the ability of some households to watch Internet television in a manner and amount that they would like,” said the streaming service in a filing last week.

Weigel Broadcasting’s MeTV has launched MeTV Music Streaming Service on MeTV.com, in association with webcaster AccuRadio. The free service is a companion to the net’s classic TV programming, featuring tunes from a variety of decades and genres. “MeTV Music brings back so many of the artists and songs that terrestrial radio has stopped playing because they ‘skew older’ or are unfamiliar to today’s program directors,” said Weigel vice chairman Neal Sabin. “Our Chicago MeTV FM station has proved there is an audience for this music with ‘hipsters, hippies, boomers and beyond.’ Now we are making a similar product available nationally via MeTV.com.”

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

UK hit The Great British Bake Off is moving from the BBC to Channel 4. Said producer Love Productions, “After an extraordinary six-year journey with the BBC, Love Productions announces with regret that it has been unable to reach agreement on terms to renew the commission of The Great British Bake Off.” The competition show was 2015’s most-watched program, with 15.1 million viewers tuning in for the finale.

Brazil’s Globosat licensed Armoza Formats dramas Hostages and Street Justice, to air as part of a focus on Israel this month.

Televisa, Pol-ka Producciones and Federation Kids & Family have started production on daily teen drama Love, Divina, set to launch at Mipcom Jr.
