More than six months after losing his anchor chair on NBC Nightly News, Brian Williams will return to the airwaves. Williams, who was suspended after it came to light he had embellished reporting experiences, will debut in a new role on MSNBC on Tuesday, September 22, the day Pope Francis is scheduled to visit the U.S., to anchor live breaking news. MSNBC is in the midst of schedule changes and says Williams will not have a dedicated hour on its new lineup.
IN THE NEWS
It’s a greenlight from AMC for Preacher, the character-driven comic book adaptation from Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) that will premiere in mid-2016. Rogen directed the pilot, which stars Dominic Cooper and is based on the Vertigo series by Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and written by Catlin. The plot involves preacher who struggles with his parish and his relationship with God. Rogen, Goldberg and James Weaver are exec producing under their Point Grey umbrella; Neal Moritz, Vivian Cannon and Ori Marmur are exec producing for Original Film.
The envelopes have been opened for the Television Academy’s juried Emmy Awards, which are judged by peers in each category and presented in advance of the televised Primetime Emmys. Among the winners, Taylor Swift picked up an Emmy for AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience, late-night funnymen dominated the Social TV Experience category with wins for Comedy Central’s @midnight With Chris Hardwick and NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Cartoon Network dominated in Outstanding Achievement in Animation with four of the seven winners.
ROK Mobile and SeaChange International are launching an all-you-can-eat video service for mobile users in the U.S. in Q1 of 2016. The service will feature thousands of movies and television series as well as niche content ranging from animation for young adults to extreme sports. "What’s driving all of the announcements this week from Apple and Verizon is the rapid growth of mobile video viewing," Jay Samit, SeaChange CEO, tells Cynopsis. "SeaChange and ROK Mobile have taken the next logical step in pay-tv’s evolution with mobile premium video in a truly liberating 21st century experience that lets mobile subscribers watch the best available content wherever, whenever, and without a long-term contract." The video service will be an added value to ROK Mobile plans, which include unlimited talk, text, data and music. SeaChange is providing the OTT platform and mobile video content for iOS and Android.
Twitter’s red-hot live video streaming platform Periscope unveiled some updates Thursday, including landscape. In the latest version of iOS and Android, users can hold their phones either in portrait or landscape – no more head-tilting. Other new features include Share Context, indicating who shared a broadcast, and Mutual Follow, to make private broadcasting easier.
More and more marketers are honing in on Periscope, a platform that’s been called the missing link in social media. “Something I find particularly compelling about Periscope and traditional Television, is how the two can mutually complement and benefit the other,” says Dave Perry, VH1’s VP, Future TV and Cross-Platform Innovation, and a panelist at the September 22 Cynopsis webinar, Harnessing the Power of Periscope. “Leveraging the broad reach of TV with the 1-to-1 access that Periscope provides, some interesting opportunities arise when both platforms work in concert,” says Perry.
