In a shift from lifestyle and entertainment content to harder weather news and digital, The Weather Channel is canceling morning shows AMHQ and Wake Up With Al. AMHQ anchor Sam Champion will focus on primetime weather reporting and host on-screen segments as the company launches its “Local Now” product for OTT providers; Al Roker will make appearances during New York weather events and work on on digital projects. Said the company, “In a fragmented world where it’s no longer about scale but about a passionate core following, we recognize the need to be hyper-focused on providing our viewers exactly what they come to us for – weather.” About 50 of the company’s 1400 employees are expected to leave in the reorg, according to CNN Money.

IN THE NEWS

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has suggested CNN donate profits from its broadcast of the second Republican debate to veterans groups. In an open letter to CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker, Trump said that, “While I refuse to brag…this tremendous increase in viewer interest and advertising is due 100% to ‘Donald J. Trump.’ … you should view the second debate as a public service and not accept the massive profits that this airing will generate.” Reports have CNN asking for upwards of $200,000 for a 30-second spot. CNN moved its broadcast of the Wednesday, September 16 event from 9p EST to 8p, pushing it closer to the 6-7:45p time allotted for the party’s second-tier candidates debate.

On a lighter note, Donald Trump will phone it in, literally, on ABC daytime talker The View today. The GOP candidate’s call-in should provide fodder for new CBS’s Late Show host Stephen Colbert, who will be hosting Vice President Joe Biden tonight.

Discovery Channel earned bragging rights in the “2015 Beta Research Cable Subscriber Study  Evaluation of Basic Cable Networks.” For the 22nd year in a row, the net was tops among total adults for importance to the enjoyment of cable, with 55 percent of respondents rating it important. History was close behind with 54 percent, followed by 51 percent for Food, FX and Weather Channel. Among potential cord-cutters, ESPN was tops among men (61 percent) while Food was first in importance among women, with 65 percent naming the net.

The National Geographic Society and 21st Century Fox are expanding their 18-year partnership. Fox already had control of the Society’s cable channels; the new joint venture adds National Geographic’s other media and consumer-oriented assets, including National Geographic magazines, National Geographic Studio, related digital and social media platforms and ecommerce businesses. With the transaction valued at $725 million, the non-profit Society’s endowment will increase to nearly $1 billion. Fox will have a 73 percent stake in the new venture, called National Geographic Partners. The deal “creates vast opportunities and enables this business to be even more successful in a digital environment,” said Fox CEO James Murdoch.

Cooking Channel‘s Sugar Showdown premieres Thursday, October 1 at 9p. The series features three bakers battling it out as they create decadent desserts for a chance to win $10,000.

Multimedia Platforms Inc., the only publicly-traded LGBT media company, has acquired New Frontiers Media Holdings, LLC. The purchase gives Multimedia Platforms an expansive reach within the LGBT markets of New York, California and Florida, spanning five brands currently publishing 3 million print copies a year. The combined companies will create America’s largest LGBT media company and will give advertisers unprecedented access to a demographic representing $884 billion in buying power in the U.S. alone.

Oprah.com announced the newest addition to its online learning platform: the two-part course 21 Days To Happiness from author Shawn Achor. PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

The CW is developing electronic dance music drama The Drop, from R.J. Cutler (Nashville) and DJ Steve Angello, who will serve as executive music producer. Kyle Jarrow is writing the script.

Bruce Campbell (Ash vs. Evil Dead, Burn Notice) has joined forces with 5X5 Media to develop Bruce Campbell’s Horrified (wt). The competition series celebrates the horror genre and its fans through an irreverent comedic lens. Campbell plans to host and exec prod the project alongside 5X5 Media’s Craig Armstrong, Rick Ringbakk and Charles Wachter.

AMC has greenlit new series Preacher, based on the 1990s comic book franchise by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Seth Rogen, who is exec-producing the project with Evan Goldberg (This Is the End), released the news on Twitter. AMC followed with an official announcement. The series centers on Jesse Custer, a conflicted Texas preacher who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop unconventional power.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Which brands made the biggest social media splash during the launch of Stephen Colbert’s Late Show on CBS Tuesday? Sabra Hummus, featured in a paid product integration, and Oreo, which got its plug courtesy of a Colbert bit about Donald Trump’s boycott of the cookies. Between 11:35p1:35a, there were 1,836 Tweets around Oreo, 1,634 Tweets around Hummus, and 351 Tweets around Sabra, an increase in the volume of Tweets around Oreo by 92% and 626% around Hummus.

“There is little doubt that both behavior and advertising have shifted irrevocably away from TV,” says Moffatt Nathanson Research, releasing two reports about the new media landscape. Findings include a continued 5.5%-6.5% drop in A18-49 viewers through 2019-2020; digital advertising will pass TV in 2017; and national TV spend will decline by one percentage point per year through 2019. Bright spot: sports, which will continue to drive ad revenue.

NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke told investors Wednesday he was determined to fight the “CPM discount,” or getting lower ad prices for viewers than the competition. Calling it a “multi-hundred billion-dollar opportunity,” Burke said, “If we are the number one 18 to 49 network and we have Blacklist and The Voice and Sunday Night Football, an eyeball should not be 10 percent less than it is on Fox or ABC or CBS.” As for viewership, “The good news is people are watching more video than ever before, they’re just watching it in places that often aren’t rated, and aren’t monetized.”

Upfront season wasn’t so “up” this year, according to Media Dynamics. The consulting company reports primetime spending for broadcast was $8.36 billion, down 3.7 percent, and cable was down 2.3 percent, to $9.45 billion. Good news: CPMs of adults 18+ were up about 4 percent on average.
