IN THE NEWS

Last night’s season three finale episode of Tyrant was its last, at least on FX. “It’s very difficult to find common ground with other people whose stories we do not know or understand,” said FX president and GM John Landgraf. “The creators of Tyrant have done their utmost over three seasons to tell American audiences a tiny fraction of the many gripping, human stories coursing through the Middle East today.” Fox 21 Television Studios president Bert Salke left room for hope, saying, “We feel the show is a gem and we’d love to find a way to keep it in production.”

Apple launched its iPhone 7 event Wednesday with a little Carpool Karaoke from The Late Late Show’s James Corden, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Pharrell. In July, Apple announced the purchase of a spin-off of Carpool, which will stream on Apple Music.

Tegna, the largest independent owner of CBS and NBC affiliates, announced Wednesday it’s spinning off car buying site Cars.com. Splitting the companies will position them “to take advantage of differentiated opportunities in the rapidly evolving broadcast and digital landscape,” said Tegna, which went under the name Gannett until spinning off its newspaper business last year. CEO Gracia Martore will retire when the move is completed, replaced at Tegna by Dave Lougee, now president of the station group, and at Cars.com by Alex Vetter.

The FCC is eliminating a 30-year rule that allowed TV station groups to discount the reach of stations that broadcast on the UHF band now that a 2009 transition to digital over-the-air broadcasts makes UHF channels “equal, if not superior to, VHF channels,” said the regulator. Station groups are prohibited from reaching over 39 percent of TV households, but under the old rule could include just half of houses with UHF stations in that count. Grandfathered in are companies, like Univision and Ion, that had arrangements set on or before September 2013, when the FCC proposed the rule change. While the FCC order called the approach “fair,” some would beg to differ. Said Dennis Wharton, of the National Association of Broadcasters, “While other industries are allowed to innovate without stifling regulation, when it comes to broadcasters, the FCC acts as if we are still in an era of I Love Lucy.”

Univision’s desire for programming that will be more appealing to a new generation of younger and U.S.-born Hispanics has had CEO Randy Falco asking long-time supplier Televisa for changes, according to the Wall Street Journal. Nearly 60 percent of the 55 million Hispanics in the U.S. are millennials or younger, notes the WSJ, drawn to shows edgier and faster-paced than traditional telenovelas. Insisting that the relationship between Univision and Televisa has “never been stronger,” Univision executive chairman Haim Saban said “the fact that programming partners discuss ways to improve programming should be a surprise to no one.”

Louisiana Rising: A Benefit Concert for Flood Relief, presented live Monday night by Raycom Media, raised over $800,000 for American Red Cross Flood Relief. Harry Connick Jr. and Randy Jackson hosted the event from Baton Rouge. The show was carried by Raycom Media, Bounce TV, the ABC Owned and Operated Stations, Hearst Television, Sinclair Broadcasting Group, Cordillera Communications, Meredith, Graham Media Group and Cox Media Group. “We are grateful to our broadcast partners that helped us reach markets beyond the Raycom Media footprint,” said Pat LaPlatney, president and CEO of Raycom Media.

Additions to the list of presenters for the 68th Emmy Awards include Laverne Cox, Tracee Ellis Ross, America Ferrara, Kit Harington, Matt LeBlanc, Joel McHale, Mandy Moore, Chris Rock, Keri Russell, Jeffrey Tambor, Kerry Washington, Damon Wayans and Constance Wu. Ceremony airs Sunday, September 18 at 8p.

Friendships are put to the test in Oxygen competition series Last Squad Standing, launching Tuesday, November 1 at 9p. Alesha Renee (Girl Code) hosts, overseeing three groups of friends as they vie for $100,000.

RETURNING SERIES

The search for love won’t stop anytime soon on ABC. The network renewed Bachelor in Paradise, featuring Bachelor and Bachelorette also-rans, for a fourth season. During season three this summer, the dating competition grew its overall audience by 9 percent year-to-year, to 6.2 million and held steady among A18-49 (2.0/8), in its most-watched season so far.

We’ll be celebrating our 2016 Rising Star Awards + HR Awards winners in just ONE WEEK at the New York Athletic Club on 9/15. Networking opportunities and celebration will be endless, but space is limited… reserve your spots before it’s too late!

COMING UP

The story of the flag raised by three NYC firefighters at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001 that later went missing is chronicled in America’s 9/11 Flag: Rise from the Ashes, premiering Sunday, September 11 at 10:30p on History. The recovery of the flag is the inaugural project under the “History Saves History” initiative, aimed at identifying and preserving history that is at risk of being lost or forgotten.

If you missed the 9p premiere of RFD-TV’s Cowboy Country TV last night, an encore of the new series inspired by “Canadian Cowboy Country” magazine encores tonight at 1a and Sunday, September 11 at 8:30a, with new episodes rolling out through fall.

Ken Burns film Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War, premiering on PBS Tuesday, September 20, will have Academy Award consideration screenings from Friday, September 9-Thursday, September 15 at Cinema Village in NYC and Laemmle Music Hall in LA. The movie focuses on the rescue of World War II refugees by Unitarian missionaries.

Spike premieres Roots of Fight Presents: Ali: Birth of the Greatest on Friday, September 9 at 11:15p. Original doc, focused on the epic 1971 bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, is narrated by Ice T and follows live coverage of a rematch between middleweights Danny Jacobs and Sergio Mora.

Pop gets in the Halloween spirit with month-long October genre programming, including over 250 hours of cult classic movies, mini-series and series. Headlining the event is six-part psychological thriller Wolf Creek, inspired by the horror film. The original movie airs Friday, October 14 at 8p, followed by the premiere of the series at 10p.

CASTING

Kevin Connolly (Entourage) will recur on upcoming Fox baseball drama Pitch. Series premieres Thursday, September 22.

NBC cast Broadway pros Ephraim Sykes (“Hamilton”) and Shahadi Wright Joseph (“School of Rock”) in Hairspray Live!, airing Wednesday, December 7. Sykes will play Seawood Stubbs, a dancer who befriends Tracy Turnblad; Joseph, who was the youngest actor to play Nala in “The Lion King,” will portray Little Inez, Seaweed’s younger sister.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

CBS This Morning will air with its first reduced network ad load on Monday, September 12, as it broadcasts live from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Target and Toyota are exclusive sponsors. “Paring down the commercial load is indicative of the special nature of the program,” said Jo Ann Ross, president of network sales. The museum’s public opening is September 24.

Presidential candidate Donald Trump may be late to the game when it comes to traditional TV advertising, but he’s got a commanding lead with earned media. According to mediaQuant, the controversial GOP candidate gobbled $509.3 in earned media in the month of August, versus $364 for Hillary Clinton. Over 12 months Trump grabbed $4.6 billion worth of earned media, while Clinton drew $2.5 billion.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Sweden-based Dramacorp and IRLC announced development of an international spy thriller based on Swedish author Jan Guillou’s Hamilton novels.

The Highway Rat, an animated adaptation of the children’s book, is in production at Magic Light Pictures for a Christmas 2017 premiere on BBC One.

Canada’s Force Four Entertainment (First Dates) has optioned Channel 4 UK series The Job Interview, from rights holders ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

Canada’s Family Channel is launching its 14th annual “Bullying Awareness Week” campaign, with actors from Backstage, The Next Step and F2N’s Degrassi: Next Class contributing to new content and an original anthem. Bullying Awareness Week runs Monday, November 14Sunday, November 20.

DIGITAL DOINGS

YouTube ordered two series from BuzzFeed Motion Pictures. Scripted comedy Broke follows cash-trapped besties pursuing their dreams, while competition series Squad Wars features teams competing for the chance to face off against BuzzFeed’s Try Guys (who will also produce).

Sydney Sailboat starts streaming on Hulu beginning Monday, September 26. The preschool series, which airs on Sprout, focuses on a sailboat and his best friend, a trainee water taxi.

CBSN, the digital streaming service from CBS News, is now available in a CBS News app for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 systems. The free to access service covers breaking news, current events, entertainment and sports news, 24/7.

A new DirecTV app lets viewers watch both live and recorded shows anywhere, and download shows from home DVR to mobile device to watch without an Internet connection. It gets even better for AT&T customers – “Data Free TV” streaming won’t chew up their mobile data allowance.
