Good morning. It’s Wednesday September 7, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

After reeling in a record $1.23 billion in ad sales for the Rio Olympics, Seth Winter, NBC EVP, Advertising Sales at NBC Sports, is shifting to an advisory role with the company. Word went wide after Linda Yaccarino, NBCUniversal’s Chairman of Advertising Sales and Client Partnerships, notified employees via memo, writing that “Just like Phelps and Bolt, Seth is going out on top after years of bringing home the goldand we are so grateful for his dedication,” and adding that “Seth remains one of the toughest negotiators you’ll ever meet, and he’s never stopped looking to create opportunities for clients who wanted to be a part of the biggest moments in sports.”

Winter’s advisory role will run through 2018, when the group carries the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics while Telemundo serves up the World Cup.

ON THE AIR

The MLS Cup is getting a new window, according to Major League Soccer, which unveiled the broadcast schedule for the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs. The championship will be carried on Dec. 10 on FOX and UniMas, marking the first time in the league’s 21-season history the championship match will be played on a Saturday evening in primetime as well as the first time FOX will offer the match and the first time since 2008 that the MLS Cup will air live on English-language network TV. Postseason action kicks off on Oct. 26, 27 with action on FS1, ESPN and UniMas.

Meanwhile, FOX Sports locked in programming plans for its 2016 coverage of the National Women’s Soccer League, with play beginning today at 7:55p on FS1 with Chicago/FC Kansas City. Jenn Hildreth calls the match beside Kyndra de St. Aubin. Overall, FS1 offer six NWSL matches this season, including the league’s championship on Oct. 9 at 5p.

ESPN wrapped up its opening slate of college football games with Ole Miss/Florida State generating a 5.3 overnight on the network, which marked the network’s top overnight of the weekend. ESPN’s streaming audience for the Seminoles’ victory set new all-time highs for a regular season ESPN college football game with an average minute audience of 231,000 viewers and a total of 854,000 unique viewers viewing 59,700,000 minutes overall.

Telemundo saw an average of 2.8 million total viewers and 1.6 million adults 18-49 for Friday’s FIFA World Cup qualifier match between Mexico/El Salvador, which was simulcast on NBC Universo. The match ranked as the top program, regardless of language, on broadcast and cable among adults 18-49.

Adding on to yesterday’s story that ONE World Sports locked in a deal with DIRECTV, the company also announced a carriage agreement with AT&T’s U-verse platform. The deals will see more than 2,600 hours annually of programming run on the outlets following the channel’s decision not to extend its five-year agreement with DISH due to certain MFN provisions. “The media landscape is evolving rapidly, but this transaction underscores that live sports, with its mix of excitement, immediacy and fan loyalty, continues to attract and retain subscribers,” said Alexander “Sandy” Brown, President & CEO, ONE World Sports. “We’re thrilled that DIRECTV and U-verse have added ONE World Sports, an independently owned network, to their lineups.”

Speaking of ESPN, the company will debut its World Cup of Hockey 2016 talent with pretournament action starting tomorrow at 8p when Team North America meets Team Europe on ESPN2 with John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes calling the game. Steve Levy and Barry Melrose will then make their debut on Sept. 13, when Team Finland plays Team USA at 8p on ESPN. Chris Chelios and Brett Hull will provide studio analysis for all pre-tournament games while Linda Cohn hosts studio segments on Sept. 8 and 9 while Adnan Virk hosts Sept. 13 and 14.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is reportedly open to a 40-team World Cup in 2026 that could see multiple countries serving as co-hosts, according to the AP, which noted that Infantino’s comments Tuesday show that FIFA will consider co-hosting by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Atlantic 10 Conference unveiled its TV slate for its men’s basketball run this season, which will see a league-record number of television appearances (208), total TV games (108) and conference games (87). Each Atlantic 10 institution will make at least eight appearances on national television through the league’s four media partners: ESPN, CBS Sports Network, NBCSN and the American Sports. All 13 games of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship will be nationally televised with ASN offering opening round games on March 8, NBCSN carrying the second round and the quarterfinals, CBS Sports Network running the semifinal games on March 11 and CBS Sports showcasing the final on network television for the eighth straight year.

NBA TV serves up Shaq: The Big Conversation tonight at 8p ahead of Shaquille O’Neal’s enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The one-on-one interview is conducted by TNT Inside the NBA host Ernie Johnson.

NBC Sports brings back the Sunday Night Football bus this season, beginning with NFL Kickoff 2016 and hitting the host cities of select Sunday Night Football as well as Thursday Night Football games this year. This season’s experience will include an interactive replica of Sunday Night Football’s control room, a replica of the Football Night in America desk, life-size “Photo Bomb” wall, and more.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

AT&T is once again partnering with Uber for the college football season, outfitting vehicles with mobile hotspots and football-streaming tablets in 11 markets this year with 20 cars per region. The complimentary rides will also incorporate our OTT streaming service, DIRECTV Now, upon its launch in Q4 of this year. AT&T’s program will work in support of two of AT&T’s key premier sponsorships, the SEC Championship and the College Football National Championship. The company is also teaming with UberEATS in four markets to deliver the a tailgate experience to hungry fans that will see football fans in select markets surprised by celebrities and athletes joining their ride.

The Sports Illustrated Group delivers the SI 2016 NFL Preview Show today at 2p on SI.com. The show features The Experts Network’s Cris Collinsworth, Boomer Esiason, Howie Long and Phil Simms who offer predictions, analysis and more for the full-length special taped at the Time Inc. studios in lower Manhattan. Select VOD from the special will be used across the SI Group digital network, including on FanSided sites, SI.com and their respective social channels.

Ericsson announced a multi-year deal with MLB Network to utilize its real-time sports graphics software, Piero. The system is integrated with major sports data providers to offer data visualization and create a more engaging experience for the audience.

ESPORTS

Gaming-focused marketing agency Freaks 4U Gaming is establishing a US presence, with the establishment of an office in Irvine. Under the leadership of Vice President Michelle Cheng, the expansion “supports the company’s growth and development in North America, as well as strengthens its global coverage of strategic consultancy services with regional offices in Taipei, Taiwan, and Nis, Serbia.” “I am very proud to spearhead yet another exciting Freaks 4U Gaming venture,” said Cheng. “The establishment of Freaks 4U Gaming LLC demonstrates our long-term commitment to the region, whether it’s offering our exceptional services or forming strategic alliance with industry partners. The Esports Championship Series, an eSports initiative founded by FACEIT and backed by Twitch, announced the replacement for Natus Vincere in its Development League, opening the doors for Epsilon eSports. The team will now have the shot at the $3.5M main league of ECS. The Development League is set to begin on September 9.

ROSTER MOVES

Pete Vlastelica, EVP of FOX Sports’ digital operations, is departing the organization after a run that saw him join in 2010 when the company picked up his Yardbarker blog network and comes following FOX’s new partnership with Sports Illustrated. The Sporting News first reported the story. “We will miss Pete’s leadership and the entrepreneurial spirit that he brought to FOX Sports,” said Eric Shanks, President and COO of FOX Sports. “The contributions Pete made to our company will last for years to come, and we wish him the best.”

Speaking of FOX Sports, Chris Bellitti is also departing the company to join WWE as Senior Vice President, Communications. As head of WWE’s Communications division, Bellitti will be a key member of the company’s senior management team, responsible for providing strategic vision for WWE’s internal and external global communications initiatives across key business units.

Showtime Networks named Chris DeBlasio as Senior Vice President, Sports Communications. DeBlasio will continue to oversee the network’s sports media, talent and public relations, sports awards, live event production support and sports messaging. DeBlasio first joined the network in 2005.

Discovery Communications is bringing in Ralph Rivera to serve in the newly created position of Managing Director, Eurosport Digital. He joins from the BBC.
