Good morning. It’s Friday September 2, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Telemundo named Ray Warren to the newly created position of President, Telemundo Deportes where he will oversee NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises’ sports business and lead its strategy across all its platforms and networks. He will also be charged with developing opportunities for both existing franchises and future acquisitions with a focus on the FIFA World Cup properties.
“As the U.S. Spanish-language home of the Olympics, FIFA World Cup and other key world-class sports events, Telemundo Deportes is the ultimate destination for Hispanic sports fans,” said Conde. “We are thrilled to welcome Ray to our growing sports division. His expertise and proven track record will be essential to maximizing the opportunities these prestigious events bring to our viewers and our partners.”
ON THE AIR
The NFL announced that its 82nd Draft will hit Philadelphia from April 27-29, 2017 along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The event, which was held in Chicago the previous two years, will once again be set in primetime for Rounds 1-3 with Round 1 taking place on Thursday, April 27 while Rounds 2-3 will be held on Friday, April 28. The Draft will conclude on Saturday, April 29 with Rounds 4-7.
A healthy dose of the Olympic Games proved fruitful for NBCSN, which saw August deliver the channel’s best month in the history in Total Day viewership and key demographics, according to live plus same day data from Nielsen. In addition, NBCSN ranked tops among all sports cable networks during the month in Total Day average viewership, hitting 509,000, Adult 25-54 viewership (214,000 viewers), and Adult 18-49 viewership (202,000 viewers).
Showtime announced plans for a two-and-a-half hour sports block that will launch on Sept. 6 that will see 60 Minutes Sports debut at 8p, Inside the NFL at 9p, and docu-series a Season with Florida State Football at 10p.
FS1 will, for the first time ever, carry a US Men’s National Team World Cup qualifier on Sept. 6 as part of a doubleheader that starts at 7:30p when the US faces Trinidad & Tobago, followed by Mexico/Honduras. Rob Stone hosts the pregame show live Alexi Lalas and Fernando Fiore while John Strong calls the US match w/ Stu Holden and Jenny Taft reporting from the sideline.
Sunday MLB on TBS pits the Giants/Cubs on Sunday at 2p. The full national telecast will be called by Brian Anderson and Ron Darling. Meanwhile, the Sept. 11 edition of the franchise will see Orioles/Tigers will Ernie Johnson joining Darling in the booth.
Michael Strahan and Tom Brady are offering DIRECTV’s Audience Network a spiritual awakening, teaming up to produce Religion of Sports for the network, according to THR. Six episodes of the docuseries are set to run, examining “the unique examples of sports’ cultural and often spiritual impact in regions around the world” starting Nov. 15 at 8p.

EMC Corporation is upgrading its role in golf to become title sponsor of the FedExCup Playoffs tournament beginning in 2017, assuming title sponsorship of Boston’s FedExCup Playoffs Event. The tournament will continue as the second of four FedExCup Playoffs events with its traditional Monday finish on Labor Day weekend at TPC Boston.
Childhood Cancer Awareness month is driving a plethora of sports brands to assist in the cause.

CBS Sports is teaming with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to assist in raising awareness during its football coverage on CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network, and on CBS social channels with promotion highlighted by a visit to Memphis by The NFL Today team to the St. Jude campus to meet patients and their families that will be part of the show on Sept. 18.

Major League Soccer launched its month-long Kick Childhood Cancer initiative, enabling fans to directly contribute through the League’s second annual ‘Scarftember,’ with each MLS club having its own Kick Childhood Cancer scarf and sales proceeds benefiting Children’s Oncology Group. Fans that post on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the #ScarvesUp hashtag will generate a $1 donation to Children’s Oncology Group.

WWE does its part for the cause with the first-ever “Get the Gear, Give the Gear” campaign, where fans, beginning Monday, can purchase bracelets and bandanas with 100% of net proceeds benefiting Connor’s Cure, to support pediatric cancer research. WWE will also utilize its global assets including WWE Network and TV broadcasts, live events, PSAs, digital and social media to generate awareness and encourage fans to get involved. Meanwhile, the WWE announcer table, entrance ramp, ring skirts and ring posts will go gold to promote the fight against pediatric cancer.
UFC Gym announced the expansion of its global footprint into Vietnam with the opening of a new signature gym in Hanoi on Oct. 30. The gym will be located at Udic Tower in Cau Giay District Hanoi and serve as the first of several locations scheduled to open throughout the region.
DIGITAL & STREAMING
CBS Sports Digital is moving into primetime and will debut Reiter Than You on Sept. 6 at 10:30p. The half-hour weeknight series will be hosted by Bill Reiter and becomes the first live primetime show to stream on CBSSports.com, with eps every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday night. Reiter will also launch a new podcast on CBS Sports digital platforms in the coming weeks.
For the first time ever, Twitter is moving to directly monetize Periscope, partnering with former US Open tennis champ Andy Roddick, who will host a series of Periscope broadcasts for this year’s tournament. Broadcasting from his Twitter handle, Roddick will provide gameplay commentary and answer questions for the audience. Chase and Grey Goose vodka will sponsor, marking the first-ever ad campaign on Periscope.
NFL Media is launching digital series Talk NOW with DeMarcus Ware, hosted by DeMarcus Ware. The program starts Sept. 5 and runs weeks during the season on NFL Now, where he will talk with current players from around the league, as well as individuals who have a unique impact on his life and his in-season routine. Talk NOW will also be distributed on the NFL’s various digital, social and network platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
ESPN announced that Sam Miller joined ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine as a national baseball columnist and feature writer. Miller will begin coverage starting Oct. 2. Since 2014, Miller has been editor-in-chief of the Baseball Prospectus website.
The USOC will offer 12 channels of live online coverage of the 2016 Paralympic Games that will compliment NBC Sports Group’s 70-plus hours across NBC, NBCSN and the NBC Sports app. The Opening Ceremony begins Sept. 7 at 7p on NBCSN.
ESPORTS
Newzoo Esports released its quarterly update of the Global Esports Market Report with data pointing to higher-than-anticipated revenues in the industry. The report now projects that eSports revenues for 2016 will hit $493 million in 2016, up 7% from the $463 million projected at the start of the year and pushing year-on-year growth to a spike of 51.7%. The increase is attributed to higher-than-anticipated investment by publishers and a faster uptake of the media rights business model within the eSports economy, creating a shift from direct advertising income to media partnerships comparable to traditional sports.
Organizers of the virtual ePrix in Las Vegas detailed plans for the upcoming eSports event with 10 gamers set to face off against Formula E drivers in January with a prize pool of $1 million. Series CEO Alejandro Agag told Reuters that the lucky 10 would secure their places through online qualifying races dubbed the ‘Road to Vegas Challenge’. The event will be held at Mandalay Bay from Jan. 5-7 during CES.
Vainglory now has Cloud9 in the fold, with the team’s acquisition of Nemesis Hydra, one of the longest-running competitive organizations in the game’s history and the only North American team to make Semifinals/Grand Finals Day of every seasonal championship to date. The team will compete as Cloud9 in this weekend’s 2016 North America Summer Live Championships.
