IN THE NEWS

MSNBC has set a premiere date for The 11th Hour With Brian Williams. The show, the first program since Williams was dismissed as anchor of NBC Nightly News, debuts at 11p Tuesday, September 6 and will feature Williams anchoring live from MSNBC Election Headquarters in NY’s Rockefeller Center. Patrick Burkey serves as executive producer of the weeknight program, which will look at political news of the day during the final stretch of the Presidential election.

Nashville fans, rejoice. The series is officially back in action, at its new home on CMT. The show yesterday tweeted photos of its first day of production, noting: “#Nashies… WE’RE BACK!”

Lifetime is cleaning house, with a decision not to renew Devious Maids for a fifth season. The show landed at Lifetime after being developed and piloted at ABC.

Viola Davis, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Dierks Bentley, Matt Bomer, Dave Franco and Bree Turner are among the latest wave of celebs to join the Stand Up To Cancer telecast on Friday, September 9. The special will air on more than 60 broadcast, cable and streaming networks in the US and Canada. Bradley Cooper, Academy Award-nominated actor and founder of the Bradley Charles Cooper Foundation, will exec produce the broadcast alongside producers Done + Dusted, in collaboration with Stand Up To Cancer’s production team.

PBS’s VP of Children’s Programming Linda Simensky will present the Content Leadership Award to Halle Stanford of The Jim Henson Company & Cartoon Network’s VP of Content Acquisitions Adina Pitt will present the Content Leadership Award to Mattel’s Christopher Keenan on September 27 for our Kids !magination Awards. Seth Meyers surprised Howard University students when he brought First Lady Michelle Obama to his taping of the show on campus in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday night. Also guesting was multi-hyphenate Nick Cannon, host of America’s Got Talent, who recently enrolled at Howard. The trio took questions from nearly 250 Howard freshmen in the on-campus auditorium, according to the White House press pool report.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Bruno Heller, creator of The Mentalist, returns to CBS as an exec producer on vigilante drama Firewall. The project was written/exec-produced by The Mysteries of Laura creator Jeff Rake and has received a put pilot commitment from the network. Rake and Heller both have overall deals at Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind the new project.

Coming off strong ratings for its premiere, TLC ordered a second season of its first scripted series, Tyler Perry’s Too Close to Home for premiere in 2017. Launched in partnership with corporate cousin OWN, the drama series reached 4.2 million viewers in its premiere airings across TLC and OWN. The August 22 premiere showed a nearly 50 percent increase among Women in L+3, according to Nielsen.

Disney XD gave an early second season renewal to its live-action sci-fi series MECH-X4. The news comes ahead of the season 1 premiere, which will feature two episodes on  Saturday, November 12 at 8p on Disney Channel and Disney XD.

Syfy renewed space-centric series Killjoys and Dark Matter for a third season; the network made the announcement just ahead of the series’ second season finales. Killjoys‘ Season 2 finale airs tonight, Friday, September 2 at 9p.

Greg Berlanti, who oversees The CW’s DC Comics Universe, has partnered with The Game and Being Mary Jane creator Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil for drama series Black Lightning, according to Deadline. The drama is based on one of DC Comics’ first major African American superheroes, who debuted in 1977.

London-based Sly Fox Productions announced a first look deal with comedy writing partnership Paul Mendelson & Paul Alexander. Alexander and Mendelson met on the long-running BBC sitcom My Hero and have been regular collaborators ever since, co-creating DreamWorks Animation series Neighbors From Hell, which ran on the TBS.

COMING UP

How much stamina do you have? Esquire will air a marathon of Japanese hit series Ninja Warrior episodes beginning Saturday, September 3 at 7a a through Tuesday, September 6 at 4a. The Labor Day marathon will feature 26 original “Sasuke” tournaments and seven “Kunoichi” eps.

Fans will get an up-close look country artist of all time Jason Aldean as he takes center stage for the first-ever CMT Concert of the Summer. Filmed during Chicago’s second-annual Country LakeShake, the 90-minute event will premiere Saturday, September 3 at 8p on CMT.

TV One steps into the sports arena with its latest original film, Ringside, premiering on Sunday, September 4 at 7p. Written, produced and directed by nationally syndicated radio host Russ Parr, Ringside explores the personal battles undefeated boxer Jaxon Hollie faces outside of the ring while preparing for the biggest fight of his career.

It’s game on Tuesday, September 6, on Showtime as the network offers a two-and-a-half hour sports block including two season premieres: A new edition of the news magazine 60 Minutes Sports debuts at 8p, followed by the ninth season premiere of Inside the NFL at 9p. At 10p, Showtime Sports presents the second installment of its all-access college football franchise, A Season With Florida State Football, one day after the Florida State Seminoles begin their season.

Univision invites soccer fans and telenovela lovers to come together and enjoy an action-packed evening on Tuesday, September 6, at 7:55p. On the west coast, a primetime airing of Fuego y Pasion will feature a live broadcast of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Round 4 Qualifier between Mexico and Honduras, followed by the premiere of the new telenovela El Color de la Pasion. East coast viewers will be able to view the telenovela premiere first, followed by the live Qualifier match.

Ahead of the Presidential debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, Today co-anchor Matt Lauer will moderate the NBC News/MSNBC Commander-in-Chief Forum on Wednesday, September 7 from New York’s Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. The one-hour event will simulcast live at 8p on NBC and MSNBC, and stream live on NBCNews.com. The candidates will take questions on national security, military affairs and veterans’ issues from a live audience comprised of service members and veterans.

Starz will host the television premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Saturday, September 10 at 9p as the seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise makes its premium cable premiere on all six Starz channels. The film then will repeat numerous times throughout the day on Sunday, September 11.

Every year, shelters and rescues across the country spend countless hours finding homes for millions of abandoned animals. In Animal Planet’s two-part, Dave Salmoni-hosted special Pet Nation Renovation, two deserving shelters receive much-needed top-to-bottom makeovers. After the renovations are complete, each shelter holds a local adoption event. Part one airs Saturday, September 17 at 10p; part two will air in the fall.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

ABC talker The Chew bites into its sixth season with a week of new programming beginning Monday, September 5. Guests to include Florida Georgia Line, Justin Bartha, Regina Hall and Freddie Prinze Jr.

Journalist Ed Gordon returns to primetime television on Tuesday, September 13 as Bounce TV premieres its first news magazine show, Ed Gordon, at 10p. Nate Parker, Maxwell and the Mothers of The Movement are featured on the series premiere.

DIGITAL NEWS

Viewers can now sample the fourth season premiere of Showtime drama Masters of Sex across multiple platforms, ahead of its linear premiere on Sunday, September 11 at 10p. Consumers who don’t subscribe to the network can watch the season 4 premiere for free on SHO.com and Facebook, and can sample the season premiere for free via services including Amazon, Apple, Google, Roku, Hulu and Sony PlayStation Vue.

The new Big Brother digital edition, Big Brother: Over the Top, will begin streaming live on Wednesday, September 28 at 10p on CBS All Access. The digital spinoff will be hosted by Julie Chen and will feature a new cast of houseguests in a reimagining of the format where fans will be able to engage with the guests.

DISTRIBUTION

Discovery Channel purchased global rights to documentary film Sacred Cod, which will make its world premiere at the 2016 Camden International Film Festival and debut on Discovery in 2017 under the Discovery Impact banner. Doc chronicles the collapse of the historic cod fishery in the waters off New England and features interviews with fishermen and their families, scientists, advocates, and federal officials.

The Hemisphere Media Group Networks acquired exclusive US pay TV rights to a two-hour special about the life and legacy of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, which will air on Cinelatino, WAPA America, Centroamerica TV, Television Dominicana and Pasiones on Sunday, September 4 in honor of her canonization by the Vatican.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

A+E Networks’ FYI net in Asia and DBS, Southeast Asia’s largest bank, are launching a strategic content marketing partnership to create a premium television and online experience in the travel sphere. As part of the partnership, FYI will provide custom-branded content for the DBS Altitude Visa Signature Card.

Weather ranked among the top 5 basic cable nets that had double-digit growth during mornings, based on cable nets with a P25-54 delivery of 20 or higher in this daypart (excluding sports and children’s networks).

Azteca America finished August as the fastest growing Spanish-language network in primetime among A18-49 for the fourth consecutive month. In its seventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth, the network also delivered its highest August ratings in five years across total viewers (3 percent), A18-49 (10 percent) and A25-54 (15 percent).

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises appointed veteran sports exec Ray Warren to the newly created position of president, Telemundo Deportes. In this new role, Warren will oversee NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises’ sports business and lead its strategy across all its platforms and networks. Warren most recently was EVP/chief revenue officer of NBC Sports Regional Networks.

Tribune Broadcasting appointed James T. Aitken as VP/GM of WXIN/FOX59 and WTTV CBS4 in Indianapolis.  Aitken will oversee all aspects of this duopoly and WTTV.2, including strategic planning and day-to-day operations. He succeeds Paul Rennie who was named president and GM of Tribune Broadcasting’s WGN-TV in Chicago. Aitken was previously Vice president & GM of KDAF, Tribune’s CW affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth.
