IN THE NEWS

ABC expanded its deal with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to broadcast the Oscars ceremony through 2028, when the event will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The existing contract was set to expire in 2020. “We are elated the Oscars will continue to call ABC home,” said Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment. “The ceremony is an important part of network programming, and we’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with the Academy and delivering a multi-faceted, and multi-platform, ceremony.”

The Weather Channel is keeping a close eye on tropical storm Hermine with nearly 80 hours of live, continuous coverage, starting at 5a this morning. TWC has 10 meteorologists deployed across the Florida, where the National Hurricane Center has issued hurricane and tropical storm watches. “We have been rehearsing for our hurricane and tropical storm coverage since March. Now we are finally putting those plans into place,” Nora Zimmett, SVP, live programming, tells Cynopsis. “The programming strategy is aggressive with field coverage and utilizes augmented reality tropical explainers in the studio. We are looking at this storm through its life cycle at every angle – beginning with before it has impacts to land to during landfall to the aftermath. Our network has the best meteorologists and leading hurricane and tropical storm experts in the world who are not only great scientists but also great communicators. We are prepared to go live around the clock starting Thursday morning for as long as this storm has impacts on land.”

CBS All Access is offering a commercial-free option. Subscribers have been paying $5.99/month for on-demand content and CBS Classics with reduced ad loads; an ad-free experience is priced at $9.99/month. Live streaming of local CBS Television stations will include the same commercials as over-the-air broadcast.

At least he’s trying. Nick Viall, runner-up in two seasons of The Bachelorette and currently on Bachelor in Paradise (safe to say he didn’t find his soulmate there), will look for love again on season 21 of ABC’s The Bachelor. The news was revealed on Bachelor in Paradise: After Paradise.

History’s Knightfall has resumed production after a fire destroyed most of a set built at Prague studio Barrandov. The 10-parter focuses on the Middle Ages’ Knights Templar.

HITN-TV entered into a content agreement with Nat Geo and Fox Networks Group to acquire Leader of the Pack and Cesar to the Rescue, starring dog trainer Cesar Millan. Also premiering on the Spanish-language educational net is Dr. Vet, L.A. “We are planning to push these new shows hard,” said Florentina Almonte, programming director. “I believe the new programming for September has the potential to be a big hit among our audience.”
