Getting ready to rhumba for season 23 of Dancing with the Stars: talk show host Amber Rose; NFL star Calvin Johnson Jr., actor Jake T. Viacom is rebranding MTV Hits into NickMusic, described as “a 24-hour music video destination for kids.” Once the change takes place on September 9, NickMusic will offer videos from different musical genres and run artist-hosted blocks, branded segments, and long-form specials and series including concerts. Earlier this month, Viacom’s VH1 Classic was rebranded to MTV Classic.

Jessica Alba has signed on as mentor and advisor for Planet of the Apps, the new unscripted series co-produced by Propagate and Apple. Silicon Valley venture firm Lightspeed Venture Partners, the first institutional investors in Snapchat, also joins the series as the venture capital partner; Gwyneth Paltrow, will.i.am and Gary Vaynerchuk will also be on hand.

Viceland

is about to enter the daily, late night talk show mix with Desus & Mero, set to debut in October. Show feature voices from the popular podcast The Bodega Boys and web show Desus vs. Mero. The cable network has also ordered a new series starring Tyler the Creator and issued second-season renewals to Huang’s World and States of Undress.

DIY Network ordered 14 additional episodes of Stone House Revival. Series follows contractor and carpenter Jeff Devlin as he and his team renovate centuries-old properties in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. More than 2.1 million viewers tuned in to season one.

Issa Rae EP, co-creator and star of upcoming comedy series Insecure, has inked a first-look producing deal at HBO. Under the two-year pact’s terms, Rae will develop programming focused on diverse voices for all the premium cablers network’s platforms, including HBO GO and HBO NOW.

CBS is developing a multi-camera comedy written by Corinne Kingsbury (The Newsroom). Untitled series centers on a young married couple dealing with the husband’s overbearing parents.

Cinemax greenlit pilot Warrior, a crime drama based on original material written by Bruce Lee. The project, set against the backdrop of San Francisco’s Chinatown in the aftermath of the Civil War, tells the story of a martial arts prodigy arrived from China, who finds himself caught up in the bloody Chinatown Tong wars.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Destination America’s Ghost Mine bows Thursday, September 29 at 9p and 10p. Series centers on the reopening of a Sumpter, Oregon mine, which was abandoned 80 years ago after a series of tragedies gave it a reputation for being haunted.

The Young Turks on Fusion, a weekly, hour-long live show on college campuses across the country, bows Monday, September 12 at 8p. Episode one airs on Fusion’s cable channel and digital properties live from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in LA.

Food Network’s Halloween Wars is back for a sixth season on Sunday, October 2 at 9p. Six teams composed of a pumpkin carving expert, cake artist and sugar artist battle it out as they create Halloween-themed edible displays.

Dr. Phil returns for its 15th season on Monday, September 12 with an interview with 29-year-old Burke Ramsey, brother of murdered child pageant star JonBenet Ramsey. Additionally, never-before-seen interrogation interviews conducted with Burke at ages 9 and 12 will be seen publicly for the first time. Check local listings.

The CW announced the fall line-up for its third season of “One Magnificent Morning” programming block, premiering Saturday, October 1 at 7a. The first three hours will be comprised of E/I programming produced to educate and entertain teens 13-16 and their families. Kicking things off are Calling Dr. Pol at 7a, followed by Rescue Me with Dr. Lisa at 8a and Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan: Family Edition at 9a. Next up, Save Our Shelter at 10a, Vacation Creation at 10:30a, Dinner Spinner Presented by AllRecipes at 11a and Unlikely Animal Friends at 11:30a. In addition, Save to Win, a play-along game show, bows Saturday, November 5 at 11:30a.

COMING UP

Kevin James, star of new comedy Kevin Can Wait, hosts CBS Fall Preview on Monday, September 12 at 8:30p. The special, which highlights the network’s six new fall series, will also be available on CBS All Access.

Grammy Salute to Music Legends comes to THIRTEEN’s Great Performances on Friday, October 14 at 9p on PBS (check local listings). The concert offers a primetime spotlight for The Academy’s 2016 Special Merit Awards recipients and features performances by honorees.

Bound in a Box: The True Story of Colleen Stan bows Saturday, September 10 at 5p on ID. The one-hour special features a first-person interview with kidnap victim Stan.

American Heroes Channel and ABC News’ Lincoln Square Productions commemorate the 15th anniversary of September 11 with a two-night programming event. 9/11: As We Watched bows Tuesday, September 6 at 10p, and Capturing Bin Laden debuts Wednesday, September 7 at 10p.

Music Choice celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month from Monday, September 5 through Sunday, October 16. The multi-platform video and music network will air its normal Latino content in addition to its program offerings on Music Choice On Demand, Music Channels and Music Choice App.

For The Love of Their Brother, a documentary about the struggles and triumphs of the Siller family following the death NY firefighter Stephen Siller on September 11, 2001, airs September 4 on American Public Television. Check local listings for times.

Cinelatino celebrates the life of international music legend Juan Gabriel with the U.S. premiere of Que Le Dijiste a Dios on Thursday, September 15. The musical based on Gabriel’s greatest hits is one of the top 10 highest-grossing Mexican films in history.

Justice Network is running a marathon of Beach Patrol and Ocean Force from Saturday, September 3 through Labor Day, Monday, September 5. Episodes begin at 1p daily.

MOVIES! Network remembers actor Gene Wilder with a special presentation of The Producers tonight at 8p.

CASTING

Robin Givens will recur as Mayor Sierra McCoy in Riverdale. The CW series is slated to premiere midseason.

Paget Brewster is returning to Criminal Minds as a series regular for the show’s twelfth season. She starred on the CBS procedural as SSA Emily Prentiss from 2006 to 2012, then appeared in guest spots. Her first episode is slated to air Wednesday, October 12.

Nurse Jackie alum Betty Gilpin will co-star opposite Alison Brie in Netflix comedy G.L.O.W. She’ll play a former soap star who left show business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into it.

David Meunier (Justified) has joined the Season 5 cast of Arrow. He’ll play Ishmael Gregor, the intimidating Pakhan of the Bratva, on the CW drama.

Sarah Carter (Falling Skies), who appeared as Steve’s new girlfriend, Lynn, twice last season, will reprise her role in the 150th episode of Hawaii Five-0. Season seven launches Friday, September 23 at 9p on CBS.

Audrey Marie Anderson has landed a series regular role in Ice, a drama series for A&T’s Audience network. She’ll play a strong-willed, independent woman who just can’t seem to shake her ex-husband.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Dish Network’s Sling TV unit is embarking on an ad campaign aimed at traditional pay TV. The ad uses intimidating celebrity pitchman Danny Trejo. In one spot, Trejo looks into the camera and announces, “People say I’m evil. I say evil is how cable companies trick you with a lower rate and then, bam! Your bill is over 100 bucks a month.” The spots incorporate Sling’s “Take Back TV” slogan.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Acorn TV acquired ITV dramedy Brief Encounters to premiere Sunday, October 30. The six-part British series follows four women striving for happiness and fulfillment. The net also set U.S. premiere dates for season 2 of Australian political thriller The Code for Monday October 10, and season 3 of Canadian cop drama 19-2 for Monday, October 24.

AOL.com launched Land the Gig. The series pokes fun at career fails and interview blunders while offering practical advice to viewers. Episodes are out every Monday on AOL Finance at aol.com/landthegig.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Disney Channel’s The Lodge, a serialized mystery/drama inspired by the Israel series North Star, is having a multi-region premiere on Friday, September 23 on Disney Channels in the U.K. and Canada and on Monday, October 17 at 5p on Disney Channel in the U.S. Episodes will also be available same day on the Disney Channel app and VOD platforms in the U.S.

CBC announced the return of the Format Incubator with new partner Warner Bros. International Television Production. From now until September 28, the hunt is on for fresh unscripted formats that break new ground in factual programming and have strong Canadian and international appeal. The collaborative venture is aimed at the Canadian independent production community with the goal of boosting the creation of original, exportable television formats and bringing Canadian creative innovation to the world.

KID STUFF

Via a deal with international distributor CAKE, Ready Jet Go!, the animated space-themed PBS Kids series from Wind Dancer Films is headed to more markets around the globe. Broadcasters include ABC (Australia), BBC Kids (Canada), Knowledge Network (Canada), YLE (Finland), NRK (Norway), SIC Television (Portugal), PBS (Thailand) and MBC (Middle East).

RATINGS

Dr. Phil (2.1 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 5 percent from the week before) was in reruns on all five days, but finished first among talk shows.

Judge Judy (6.3, up 3 percent) easily won the courtroom race and was the highest rated show in syndication overall for the third week in a row.

Family Feud (6.0, up 2 percent), in second place overall behind “Judy,” out-rated the game shows for the 17th straight week. Entertainment Tonight (2.8, steady) was the top magazine performer for a third straight week.

Scripps Networks Interactive’s portfolio of cable channels boasted a strong August despite the 17-day Olympics coverage. HGTV finished the month as the number 2 cable net among W25-54 and No. 4 among P25-54. Food Network tied for number 5 in cable for the month among P25-54 in primetime. Travel Channel saw its tenth consecutive month of year-over-year primetime growth among W25-54, and its seventh straight month of growth among P25-54.

Hallmark Channel’s six-week “Summer Nights” programming event closed with original movie Summer of Dreams boosting the net to rank #1 among HH and total viewer ratings and delivery (2.3 and 2.5 million, respectively). The six movies averaged 1.9HH and 2 million total viewers.

During Summer 2016, Freeform boasts it delivered the top 2 scripted basic cable series (Pretty Little Liars/The Fosters) and top 2 ad-supported cable comedies (Baby Daddy/ Young & Hungry) among W18-34, and was the #4 basic cable network in Prime in the demo. Freeform reached over 70 million total viewers, and had 30 million consumer engagements across digital platforms and Set-Top Box VOD orders.
