IN THE NEWS

Season 7 will be the swan song for Freeform drama Pretty Little Liars. The series finale is set to air as a two-hour event in April, followed by the premiere of new series Famous in Love, from Liars creator and showrunner I. Marlene King. Liars summer finale airs tonight at 9p.

NBC’s Grimm will come to a close after season 6. The drama’s final chapter starts Friday, January 6 at 8p, and will include the long-awaited battle between Nick and Capt. Renard.

Cable, direct-broadcast satellite and telco losses amounted to 812,000 video customers in 2Q16, reports SNL Kagan. Bright spot for cable: it was the fifth consecutive year of diminishing losses for the period, with a drop of 298,000 video customers.

Ryan Lochte isn’t the only Olympic athlete competing in season 23 of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars – gold and silver medal-winning gymnast Laurie Hernandez is also going after the mirror ball trophy. Past Games champs who’ve come out on top include Apolo Ohno, Kristi Yamaguchi, Shawn Johnson and Meryl Davis. Season premiere is Monday, September 12 at 8p.

Shari Redstone, now in charge at Viacom, is mulling over recombining it with CBS Corp., reports Bloomberg. CBS and Viacom split in 2006, but while CBS has thrived, Viacom has seen slower growth. Consolidation would align CBS with a film studio, Viacom’s Paramount Pictures.

The HITN-TV/Kids First! Film Critics Boot Camp just graduated a new class of kids 8-18, who developed writing, videotaping and reviewing skills at the HITN-TV studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard this summer. The project comes from the nonprofit Coalition for Quality Children’s Media.

Juried award winners for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for the 68th Annual Emmy Awards include Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time (Bad Jubies, Stakes Pt. 8: The Dark Cloud) and Long Live the Royals; Nat Geo’s He Named Me Malala, and Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken DC Comics Special III: Magical Friendship. Juried categories are screened by a panel of peers, with awards going to any that win unanimous approval. Awards will be presented Sunday, September 11.

Gaumont Television is teaming with Jackie Tohn, Michael Scharf, Ivan Askwith and Kristen Bell to produce animated pre-school series Do, Re & Mi. Apps, games and music videos to follow.

TNT ordered a pilot for Let the Right One In, based on the bestseller about a bullied young boy who finds solace with a female vampire. Pilot is being produced by Tomorrow Studios in association with Turner’s Studio T.

David Boyd joins Spike and TWC-Dimension Television drama The Mist as producer/director. Series based on the Stephen King novella premieres on Spike in 2017.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

NBC’s Trump-less The New Celebrity Apprentice (hello, Arnold!) arrives Monday, January 2 at 8p with a two-hour premiere. “Epic, romantic” newcomer Emerald City also takes two up hours for its debut, on Friday, January 6 at 9p.

The real-life experiences of a high-flying rescue team are documented in Travel Channel’s Everest Air. Six-parter debuts Wednesday, October 26 at 10p. “The mix of incredible beauty, awesome risk and the promise of a life-changing reward make Mount Everest one of the most compelling places on the planet,” said Courtney White, SVP, programming. “Everest Air offers a unique perspective on what can happen when anyone dares to tackle that imposing mountain.”

Two Reelz docu-series launch Saturday, September 10. Rich and Acquitted opens with the case of Michael Jackson at 9p, followed by Hollywood Homicide Uncovered, focused for the first episode on the murder of Robert Blake’s wife, at 10p.

Science Channel has NASA’s Unexplained Files returning tonight at 9p, followed by Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman at 10p. What makes them compatible programs? Both series “explore big questions, but in different ways,” Caroline Perez, VP of development and production at the network, tells Cynopsis. “They each offer insight into the most intriguing subjects, from life on earth to the mysteries of our universe.”

Two teams of talentless chefs compete in new Food Network series, Worst Bakers in America, starting Sunday, October 2 at 10p. Duff Goldman and Lorraine Pascal lead the hapless recruits.

ID’s Nightmare Next Door is back for season six starting Friday, September 2 at 10p. True crime show exposes dark secrets of small town America.

Season three of The Walking Dead returns en espanol to NBC Universo on Wednesday, August 21 at 10p.

Jagger Eaton’s Mega Life focuses on 15-year-old skateboarding phenom Eaton, as he spends time with his sports idols and goes on adventures like cage-free diving with sharks. Fun stars Friday, September 9 at 7:30 on Nickelodeon. Leading into the series premiere, Eaton will guest on viral video show Crashletes at 7p.

COMING UP

Smithsonian Channel’s Building Star Trek celebrates the 50th anniversary of the iconic show with a two-hour look at its lasting influence. What’s it all about? “A half-century ago Star Trek created a vision of a bold, hopeful, optimistic future. That vision is still inspiring people today,” Tim Evans, executive producer, Smithsonian Channel, tells Cynopsis. “Building Star Trek reveals how the Smithsonian curators saved and restored the original Starship Enterprise model, explores how the TV series had such a massive impact on the future of science, and includes interviews with actors like Nichelle Nichols, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban who tell us about their experiences on the set.” Special beams up Sunday, September 4 at 8p.

Weiner, documenting the political downfall of former congressman Anthony Weiner, premieres Saturday, October 22 at 9p, Showtime reminded us on Monday. Hours earlier, Weiner’s wife, Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, announced she intended to separate from her husband, following reports of new suggestive messages to another woman. Weiner was then put on “indefinite leave” from NY1’s “Wise Guys” segment. Weiner resigned from Congress in 2011 amid a sexting scandal. Showtime told Deadline they’re in talks to possibly update the doc.

CNBC documentary Ground Zero Rising: Freedom vs. Fear tells the story of the redevelopment of the 16-acre site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Hosted by Jim Cramer, the one-hour original premieres Thursday, September 1 at 10p.

Smithsonian Channel has a special day of programming on September 11 marking the 15th anniversary of the attacks, including 9/11: The Day That Changed the World at 2p and 8p. The two-hour special hosted by Martin Sheen, spanning dawn to midnight on 9/11, includes interviews with Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Rudy Giuliani and other key decision makers.

New series Star Plates launches on Food Network Tuesday, September 27 at 11, as celebs take crash cooking courses with restaurant chefs.

Miranda Lambert is set to receive the inaugural Merle Haggard Spirit Award at the 10th Annual ACM Honors, airing Friday, September 9 at 9p on CBS. The event celebrates special honorees and off-camera winners from the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards.

Tonight’s episode of TLC’s Playhouse Masters features a fantastical creation for the daughter of Washington Nationals player Ryan Zimmerman. Steph Curry’s already been there – in last week’s premiere, the Golden State Warriors player had his own playhouse constructed. “Having a place for my two daughters to let their imaginations live is a very rewarding experience and will be part of our family for a while,” said the NBA superstar. Series airs Tuesdays at 10p.

Maroon 5 guitarist James Valentine will be featured in AT&T Audience’s Ernie Ball: The Pursuit of Tone on Friday, September 16 at 8p. Documentary series focuses on musical artists.

CASTING

Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show) will recur on season three of Fox’s Empire as the mother of city councilman Angelo Dubois (Taye Diggs). Drama resumes Wednesday, September 21.

Anna Paquin (True Blood) will star in Bellevue, a drama premiering on Canada’s CBC in winter 2017. Allen Leech (Downton Abbey) and Shawn Doyle (House of Cards) also star.

Emily Watson (The Book Thief) landed the role of Elsa Einstein, second wife and first cousin of Albert, in Nat Geo’s Genius. Also added to the cast: Michael McElhatton (Game of Thrones), Seth Gabel (Salem), Samantha Colley (The Crucible), Richard Topol (Elementary) and Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men). Production on the anthology series begins next month in Prague, to air in 2017.

Australian actor David Berry (A Place to Call Home) has joined the cast of Starz’ Outlander. Season three premieres in 2017.

Add Megalyn Echikunwoke (Damien) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect) to the cast of Showtime pilot White Famous. Comedy about a young African-American comedian (Jay Pharoah) on the rise comes from Jamie Foxx and Tom Kapinos (Californication).

Alison Brie (Community) landed the lead in upcoming Netflix comedy G.L.O.W., inspired by the story of the 1980s female wrestling league.

Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck) will star opposite Joseph Fiennes and Elisabeth Moss in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, based on the novel by Margaret Atwood.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

McDonald’s selected Omnicom Group to handle its U.S. creative account. DDB North America CEO Wendy Clark will oversee a new agency dedicated to the fast food giant. “This agency of the future really has digital and data at the heart,” McD’s U.S. chief marketing office Deborah Wahl told AdAge, “which allows us to be customer obsessed at a whole new level.” Said a statement from Publicis Groupe’s Leo Burnett Co., which passes the baton after working with McDonald’s for 35 years, “The work we’ve done over the years for McDonald’s has been nothing sort of spectacular, and we can be particularly proud of having been partners during their business turnaround. We wish them continued success.”

BRANDED CONTENT

Personalized video company IRIS.TV and video distribution and content discovery platform Vemba are teaming to provide users with personalized content using both owned and external video content sources. “This partnership will help media companies maximize the value of their video libraries, create engaging and relevant content, and match brands with the exact right audiences,” says Sim Blaustein, partner at Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments, an investor in both companies. “Having these two portfolio companies collaborating in this way creates larger combined value in the video ecosystem.”

DISTRIBUTION

Just in time for hunting season, Outdoor Channel will be available free to Dish subscribers on Channel 396 from Wednesday, September 7-Wednesday, October 5.

Disney Channels Worldwide acquired rights to Polly and the ZhuZhu Pets from Corus Entertainment producer and distributor Nelvana. The animated kids series is set to launch on Disney Channel in the U.S. on Monday, September 12, followed by Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Family Feud (FremantleMedia North America) returns with host Steve Harvey on Monday, September 12, while Celebrity Name Game (FremantleMedia North America/Debmar-Mercury) launches a week later, on Monday, September 19, with Craig Ferguson manning the mic.

RATINGS

Sunday’s Big Brother on CBS delivered 6.8 million viewers, a season 18 high, in early numbers. A 2.0 rating among A18-49 tied a Sunday high for the season.

HGTV’s Flip or Flop was the number one cable program for the night on Thursday, August 25. The 9p episode, garnering a 1.35 Live+SD rating among viewers P25-54, helping HGTV secure the lead position among cable networks on Thursday night as well as the number four spot among all television networks, behind only ABC, CBS and NBC. It was HGTV’s highest rated Thursday night ever in P25-54 ratings.

ITV’s Victoria, filling Downton Abbey’s slot, premiered on UK’s ITV to 5.7 million viewers and a 30 share. Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) stars as Queen Victoria. The series finale of Downton nabbed 8.8 million viewers and a 39 share.

Sunday’s MTV VMAs grabbed 6.5 million total viewers across Viacom’s MTV, MTV2, MTV Classic, VH1, Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land, BET, CMT, Centric and Logo, down 33 percent versus last year. Streaming, on the other hand, jumped 70 percent, reaching a massive 62.8 million streams on Sunday.

Wednesday’s season six premiere of ID’s Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda broke the net record for best season debut of a returning series for delivery of P2+ (1.99 million), HH (1.609 million), and P25-54 (799,00) in L+3 viewing. The debut ranked fourth in all of ad-supported cable for P2+ and HH during the 10p timeslot.

Telemundo was the number one Spanish-language network during Monday-Friday primetime among A18-49 and A18-34 for the month of August, according to Nielsen, averaging 809,000 A18-49 viewers and 382,000 A18-34 .

Crown Media Family Networks hired Sharmistha Chatterjee as Director, Social Media. Chatterjee had served as director of marketing & social media at Variety.

Joanna Klein was tapped to serve as Senior Vice President, Scripted Development for Lifetime. Klein joins Lifetime from The CW, where she was SVP, Development.

Manuel Alduy has been named Senior Vice President Sales and Development at Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution. Alduy is former head of Canal OTT.

Tribune Broadcasting announced the appointment of Chris Wayland as Vice President/Group Operations. Wayland, who joins Tribune Broadcasting on September 19, was most recently EVP and GM for WSVN/Miami, WHDH/Boston and WLVI/Boston for Sunbeam Television.

NBCUniversal named Edward A. Chuchla as Chief Real Estate Officer beginning September 12.Chuchla will be responsible for the company’s global real estate portfolio of over 500 properties, including the headquarters in Rockefeller Center.

Engel Entertainment has hired Ben Shank, the showrunner of Animal Planet’s   Lone Star Law, as Senior Vice President of Programming, and Jill Michelle Williams (I Love You, But I Lied…) as Head of Development.

IN MEMORIAM

Actor Gene Wilder died August 29 of complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83. Known mainly for roles in films including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wilder also had numerous television credits, including 1994 sitcom Something Wilder and an Emmy-winning guest role on Will & Grace.

Darrell Ward, a driver on History’s Ice Road Truckers since season 6, died in a plane crash on August 28. He was 52. Ward was slated to begin filming a TV pilot about plane wreck recoveries.

This Day in History: 2005 – Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, flooding New Orleans.
