Nielsen adjusted its National Television Household Universe number for the 2016-17 season to 118.4 million, up from 116.4 million last year and 115.6 million in 2013. Said the measurement company, “The 2017 National Universe Estimates reflect real changes in population since last year and updated TV penetration levels, differentially calculated for qualifying market break and age/sex demographic categories.” A TV household is defined as one that has a TV or monitor that can transmit video via an antenna, cable set-top box or satellite receiver and/or broadband connection.

Telemundo issued a response to to SAG-AFTRA’s cry of censorship after the Spanish-language net declined to run a 30-second spot accusing its parent company, NBCUniversal, of paying its on-air talent less than its NBC performers. A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM NCM

Your Ads Should Run Unopposed…

You’ll never see a political ad on NCM, which frees schedules from mudslinging, preemptions and premiums. Combine that with the highest weekly Millennial ratings, like last weekend’s 8.0 A18-34, and you’ve got a network that works for you.

We’re America’s Movie Network and we approve this message.

ADVERTISING

The U.S. ad market will grow 5.8 percent this year, forecasts London-based ad researcher Warc, to a record $178 billion. Boosted by the Olympics and the election, TV spending will rise 6.6 percent, to $68 billion, versus a 3.5 percent drop last year. In 2017, the company predicts a 4.5 percent drop for TV, to $65 billion, while digital media rises 12.5 percent, to $76 billion.

That said, digital gains have slowed, according to Standard Media Index’s analysis of 70 percent of total national U.S. agency spend. In July, SMI found digital spending was up by 12 percent, half the average rate from the three prior years, while national television, which has been declining, gained 3.2 percent. “We have seen digital’s growth slow considerably in the past few months, and we put this down to advertisers returning to TV after being a little too aggressive with their foray into digital,” says SMI chief executive officer James Fennessy. Cable’s growth was 5.6 percent for the month, with particularly strong results for HGTV, TNT, Food Network, Bravo and news nets.

KIDS CORNER

Christopher Keenan, Mattel Creations SVP, content development and executive producer and winner of the Content Leadership Award at the 2016 Cynopsis !magination Awards, tells Cynopsis Kids editor Cathy Applefeld Olson that while the house of Barbie has often focused on properties for girls, he’s interested in developing boys properties that “are based in strong characters and strong stories.” Says Keenan, “I’m not particularly looking for combat-based properties. I’m trying to look at genres that aren’t being served by some of our competitors and colleagues, and trying to carve out a new niche of what can be competitive boys entertainment. We are pursuing a couple o properties from other media. One property I can’t name yet but it’s from an established book series, and another is a new take on a well-established character.”

As for the biggest challenge creating kids content today, “It’s really a matter of standing out,” says Keenan. “There are just so many choices for audiences, for kids in particular right now. The landscape is more competitive than ever, and so many of kids’ viewing choices are being made so rapidly, and there’s such instant decision-making going on in terms of what’s going to be appealing and what’s not. Things like design and production style are more important than ever now in terms of grabbing attention.” For info on the Kids !magination Awards, go here.

CASTING

Added to the guest cast of Freeform comedy pilot Alone Together, from Lonely Island’s Andy Samburg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer: Chris D’Elia (Undateable), Ginger Gonzaga (Wrecked), Edgar Blackmon (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping), Hayley Marie Norman (Adam Ruins Everything), Kamilla Alnes (American Horror Story), Jim O’Heir (Parks and Recreation) and Justine Lupe (Younger).

Guy Burnet (Ray Donovan) landed a recurring role in season three of Showtime’s The Affair. Drama returns Sunday, November 20.

DIGITAL DOINGS

AT&T inked an all-platform deal with HBO that will make HBO and Cinemax available on AT&T’s upcoming OTT service DirecTV Now. Calling the agreement “groundbreaking” in the pay TV and wireless industries, Dan York, chief content officer at AT&T, said, “With this agreement, we have created easy access to subscribe and consume HBO’s premium content across all of our platforms.…This is a first-of-its-kind deal for both companies and a big win for consumers.”

A new survey from J.D. Power found differences in the levels of satisfaction with streaming services between cord-cutters and pay-TV subscribers. While consumers who cut the cord rated SVOD platforms 802 on a scale of 1000 and those who never had pay-TV rated SVOD 807, viewers who streamed as well as subscribed gave SVOD platforms a rating of 826. Part of the reason for the difference, said Kirk Parsons, senior director and technology, media & telecom practice leader at J.D. Power, is demographics. “Customers who only stream are younger than those who also have TV,” Parsons points out. “Nearly two-fifths (37 percent) of customers who only stream are 18-34 years old, compared with 30 percent of those who also have TV…. Also, streaming-only customers are less likely to use transaction-based streaming services, which perform higher in the content measure.” Of note: J.D. Power said only 13 percent of consumers are cord-cutters, and 4 percent are cord-nevers.

How satisfied are you with your streaming service? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.
