CYNOPSISSPORTS
08.29.16

Good morning. It’s Monday August 29, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

After serving up a heavy dose of major international soccer since launching in 2012, beIN Sports hits a new stage in its strategy shift this week with the launch of college sports coverage through its recent deal with Conference USA, which will now feature college football, men’s and women’s basketball and soccer, baseball, softball and volleyball. Saturday will see the company kick off the programming with New Mexico State/UTEP at 8p, with a 30-minute pre-game show, half-time show, and post-game show hosted by Jeremy St. Louis, who joins Donovan McNabb, O.J. McDuffie, and Ki-Jana Carter in the Miami studio. Microphone duties for the game will be handled by Matt Martucci, Brett Romberg, and Jordan Daigle.

Cynopsis Sports spoke with beIN’s Deputy Managing Director Antonio Briceno about the new addition to the family and its role in shaping its platforms in the years ahead.

Briceno on the evolution of beIN Sports: The addition of new sports to our lineup marks a new change in our strategy. We were born out of international sports, going after the best leagues out there, but this is an extremely competitive market and most of the premium content was mostly related to soccer, which is still not one of the top three sports in this country for the US audience, even though it continues to grow. The reality was that we needed to expand our presence in the English general market and we decided that we didn’t want to be perceived as an international network anymore.

On the addition of Conference USA to the mix: We started looking at the whole change of strategy late last year but deals for leagues in this country are often constructed to run for a long period of time. So we took a look at what was available and felt that college sports stood out as an area where some of the conferences were in deals that precluded them from having the exposure that they deserved. We felt that there was an audience out there for these schools who may not be in a top five conference.

On new sponsor opportunities: So far we have seen six sponsors come in to partner with us on college sports and we are in talks with 16 new advertisers that we previously were not in touch with. The other fact here is that one of the issues we have with soccer, no matter how good the audience may be, is that the inventory is extremely limited with six commercial breaks per game. Now that we are getting into football, this opens tremendous up tremendous opportunities because we go from six to 19 commercial breaks so the inventory is almost triple.

On mulling eSports: As part of the new strategy that we are planning for the next five years, we are very much looking to bring in more millennials. eSports and other type of short, entertaining content are very much of interest to us. We are looking into eSports, although we haven’t made any decisions so far.

ON THE AIR

After tackling Australia with its California/Hawaii matchup over the week, the Pac-12 Conference is getting a permanent home in the country, announcing a multi-year deal with FOX Sports Australia to carry 13 Pac-12 football and 21 basketball games annually. In addition, the network will offer all episodes of Pac-12 Networks’ “The Drive” for football and men’s basketball. This season’s contests will be part of a Game of the Week package running through the entire Pac-12 season while basketball games will include both a Game of the Week package starting Dec. 3 and eight games of the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

ESPN serves up its US Open coverage today, highlighted by a prime-time doubleheader headlined by matches featuring Novak Djokovic and Madison Keys at 7p on ESPN2. ESPN2’s live coverage of the opening Monday night will include the traditional Opening Night ceremony, highlighted by a performance from Phil Collins. Play begins at 11a on WatchESPN, before the linear channel jumps in at 1p.

Meanwhile, Tennis Channel announced that, as it enters its eighth year of US Open coverage, the network now lays claim to more than 45 million US homes, according to comScore, with households expected to reach more than 60 million in 2017. That marks a rise of 10 million since February; the channel’s last month as an independent network prior to its purchase by Sinclair.

NFL Network locked in Sept. 13 as the day that Undrafted returns to the channel. This season will see eight hour-long eps runs on Tuesdays at 8p as part of an expanded season. This season’s targets include Jeremiah Allison, Mike Bercovici, Mariel Cooper, Jakeem Grant, LaQuan McGowan, and Swayze Waters.

WWE announced the passing of WWE Hall of Famer Harry Fujiwara, aka Mr. Fuji, at the age of 82. Fuji spent more than 30 years as both an in-ring competitor and manager, working with the likes of George “The Animal” Steele, Kamala, Killer Khan, Demolition, The Powers of Pain, Yokozuna and “Magnificent” Don Muraco.

ESPORTS

Yahoo Esports locked in a two-year partnership with ESL for distribution across Yahoo’s properties as well as development of new tournaments and integrated sponsorship opportunities for advertisers. The two companies will align to live stream ESL produced tournaments in HD quality across Yahoo properties. “ESL in a unique position to be able to offer access to some of the world’s best eSports competitions, and having a partner like Yahoo Esports means we will not only reach a broader audience with a supreme quality broadcast, but also deliver exclusive editorial content for esports fans worldwide,”  said Nik Adams, Senior VP of Sales at ESL.

HTC eSports stepped into the festering debate between Riot co-founder Marc Merrill and team owners in the League Championship Series, noting that it was mulling getting out of the LCS due to restrictions. The company posted on Facebook that “With less avenues for advertisement in League of Legends, stemming from the restrictions on the teams and players, restrictions on the subreddit, and the lack of available marketing opportunities at competitions, it is becoming difficult to justify our investments into the scene.”

UK-based online retailer Ebuyer.com announced a sponsorship with FMESPORTS. “We’re extremely happy to be partnering up with Ebuyer, one of the biggest names in UK online retail,” said FMESPORTS owner Darren Ball. “It was clear from the get go that both parties shared the same passion for progressing in the esports and gaming sectors and after meeting with many of Ebuyer’s staff, we knew that it would be a perfect match.”
