A crew member on Spike TV’s Cops died after being accidentally shot by a police officer while covering a standoff between police and a robbery suspect Tuesday night. Bryce Dion was caught in the gunfire in Omaha Neb.; officers were not aware he was there, said Omaha police chief Todd Schmaderer at a news conference Wednesday. Cops creator John Langley called Dion “one our best…a very talented guy.” The suspect, who had been brandishing a pellet gun, was also fatally wounded.

Pop-up shop Central Perk opens in NYC’s SoHo Wednesday, September 17 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Friends – and the brew’s free for a month, courtesy of Warner Bros. and Eight O’Clock Coffee. In addition to contests and giveaways, look for appearances by James Michael Tyler, who played barista Gunther on the long-running series. Media previews Monday and Tuesday, September 15 and 16.
Big changes for ESPN2’s Olbermann: just as the show hit its first anniversary came the announcement that it’s trading its 11p timeslot for 5p starting Monday, September 8, and switching to a half-hour format. The move gives Keith Olbermann access to a wider audience, as well as the flexibility to also host segments of ESPN’s SportsCenter, which his hosted from 1992-1997. Besides, said Olbermann, “I’ve done all the damage I can do here in late night.”
Discovery canceled reality show Sons of Guns, “given the serious and horrific nature of the charges against William Hayden,” said the net in a statement. Hayden was arrested Tuesday, charged with the aggravated rape of his daughter since she was 11. Earlier this month, Hayden claimed molestation charges were false.
Vibrant TV, an ad-supported broadcast net offering programming in English from producers worldwide, has launched on Galaxy 23. Vibrant is airing a sampling of its series on Hulu on a branded channel to promote the linear service.
WAPA America, a cable net for Puerto Ricans and Caribbean Hispanics in the U.S., has reached an agreement with Nielsen to become reported in the measurement company’s national data. Launched in 2004, WAPA America is seen in more than 5 million homes.
The Non-Fiction Producers Association, formed in July, announced it already has a membership of 22, including new additions Bunim-Murray Productions, Evolution Media, High Noon Entertainment and Zodiak New York, among others. “We are gratified by the continuing and growing positive response to the formation of the NPA,” said exec director Rick Feldman. “We are currently in talks with more production companies that have expressed serious interest.” Purpose of the group includes promoting “best practices” to ensure the welfare of those working in the nonfiction television industry.
A Time Warner Cable outage during “routine network maintenance” prompted New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to say New York would include an investigation of the incident as part of its review of the Comcast-TWC merger. About 11 million subscribers experienced an outage of VOD and Internet service for about an hour and a half early Wednesday morning.
Reality update: Former Atlanta Brave player John Rocker will compete on CBS’s Survivor, returning for season 29 Wednesday, September 24 at 8p. Castaways will compete in Nicaragua. And ABC announced its next Bachelor: Iowa farmer Chris Soules, who failed to win the heart of Bachelorette Andi Dorfman. Season 19 of the dating show premieres in January.
To goose awareness of new Cinemax historical drama The Knick, sister net HBO will air the first three eps on Labor Day, beginning at 8p. Cinemax picks up with the fourth installment Friday, September 5 at 10p.

FX ordered 10 eps of comedy Baskets, co-created and exec produced by Zach Galifianakis, Louis C.K. and Jonathan Krisel (Portlandia). Galifianakis plays a man who wants to become a professional clown in the series scheduled to launch in 2016.
El Rey and Mark Burnett’s One Three Media start production on freestyle wrestling series Lucha Underground on September 6, in front of a live audience in LA. Series debuts Wednesday, October 8 at 8p.
MGM is developing a series based on 1967 Sidney Poitier/Rod Steiger classic In the Heat of the Night. Tate Taylor and John Norris (The Help) and Warren Littlefield (Fargo) would exec produce the project, just getting out of the gate.
Claudia Lonow’s Assisted Loving has received a script commitment from NBC, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Comedy from Universal Television is based on the book by Bob Norris; Lonow will write the script and exec produce with Aaron Kaplan and Tracy Katsky.
Hawaii Five-0 actor Daniel Dae Kim is adapting South Korean drama series Good Doctor with CBS and CBS Television Studios. Kim signed a first-look deal with CBS TV Studios last fall with his production company, 3AD. Adele Lim (Star-Crossed) will write and exec produce with Kim.

Great American Country announced five new series launching this fall. On tap: Flippin’ RVs debuting Wednesday, September 3 at 8p; Farm Queens (beauty pageant contestants working a farm) bowing Sunday, September 14 at 6p; All American Amusement Parks, hosted by J.D. Scott, big bro to Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan, starting Thursday, October 2 at 8p, and Barnwood Builders, premiering Tuesday, October 7 at 10p.
Producing a clips show like The World’s Wildest Commercials, airing tonight at 10p on ABC, is no simple matter. “While commercial clip specials deliver ratings in prime time, there’s a misnomer that they’re inexpensive to produce,” Robert Horowitz, exec producer and president of Juma Entertainment, tells Cynopsis. “Getting company approval to air the spot is the easy part. It’s the expense of tracking down actors, licensing their appearance, and clearing the music in the commercial that takes up a large part of the production budget. But the commercials do deliver!”
Car restoration series Highway to Sell (ha!) premieres on Discovery Monday, September 1 at 10p. The Twelve02 Television production has experts restore beloved autos to their former glory – then forces the owners to accept the highest bid at auction, or buy back their ride at a discounted rate.
ID’s at it again! The guilty pleasure net debuts Young, Hot & Crooked on Friday, September 5 at 10p and 10:30p, with “shocking true crime stories committed by the young and wealthy.”
History released vintage posters promoting the Great Harry Houdini, recreated with Adrien Brody as the master of illusion. Houdini miniseries, with Brody in the title role, airs Monday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 2 at 9p.
Let the games begin! Esquire will run the entire first season of Friday Night Tykes on Monday, September 1 from 10a-8p, ahead of encore airings Fridays from 8-10p starting September 5. Season two of the docu-series about the controversial culture of youth football is slated for a January 2015 premiere.
Travel offers a double dose of hotels in hot water starting Tuesday, October 7. Hotel Impossible, launching season five at 9p on a new night, helps struggling establishments get back on their feet. New series Resort Rescue follows at 10p, with hidden cameras uncovering major messes at faltering resorts.
The finale of Univision’s De Que Te Quiero, Te Quiero (I Really Do Love You) comes to its dramatic conclusion Friday at 7p, replaced on Monday by new telenovela La Gata.
“Wicked Weather Sundays” kick off October 5 on Weather Channel with the season two premiere of Strangest Weather on Earth at 9p, and new series American Super/Natural at 10p.
The new season of TLC’s Breaking Amish debuts on a new night, Thursday, September 18 at 10p, with the cast moving to Brooklyn to explore life outside their Amish communities.
The most outrageous moments in Ink Master history are highlighted in the series’ one hour special, You Choose Live, on Tuesday, September 2 at 9p. Hosted by Dave Navarro and featuring a fan-voted “most insane” moment, the show precedes Ink Master’s season five premiere at 10p.
Amazon comedy Transparent premieres Friday, September 26 in the U.S. and U.K. on Prime Instant Video. The show’s entire 10-ep season will be available. Series is written, directed and produced by Jill Soloway (United States of Tara) and stars Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Gaby Hoffman, Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass.
Bounce TV announced its summer music festival, kicking off in Dallas tomorrow, August 29. Patti LaBelle and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly headline, with American Idol Ruben Studdard as special guest. For more info, go here.

Kenya’s Got Talent, too. FremantleMedia International and Syco Entertainment announced a multi-year partnership with Clouds Media International for yet another version of the Got Talent format, lifting the total number of adaptations to 63 worldwide. Talent airs in the U.S. Tuesdays and Wednesdays on NBC.
CBBC children’s drama Eve, debuting in the UK in early 2015, has been acquired by HBO Latin America, announced Argonon International Head of Sales Lynn Lugsden, who anticipates “further deals in the coming months.”
DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE
Pivot is aiming for higher education: Participant Media’s net is launching on Philo, bringing its programming slate to over a dozen universities. “As a network for Millennials, we are very excited to now be carried on Philo’s system which is made for our core audience,” said Stephanie Ruyle, Pivot’s EVP, distribution. Philo uses a university’s existing IP network and existing contracts with satellite providers to stream TV on an authenticated basis to student laptops, tablets, smartphones and TVs.
Hulu landed exclusive streaming rights for Starz comedy Party Down. All episodes will be available starting Friday, August 29 on Hulu Plus, with the first five available for a limited time on Hulu.com.
The skies might not be getting friendlier, but they’re getting funnier. Tricon announced inflight sales of programming including IFC comedies The Birthday Boys and Maron for Air Canada and The Spoils of Babylon for Air Lufthansa.
RATINGS
NBC’s America’s Got Talent was up 5 percent week to week, with a 2.1/7 rating among A18-49. The competition is in semi-final rounds, headed for the season 9 finale on Wednesday, September 17.
Four out of the top five entertainment mags got a boost covering Monday’s Emmy Awards. In metered markets Tuesday, Extra (1.8/4) was up 50 percent from the day before and up 12 percent versus last year; Access Hollywood (1.8/4) was up 20 percent versus the day earlier and up 5 percent from last year; Entertainment Tonight (3.4/6) saw a 9 percent gain over both the prior day and the year prior and The Insider (1.3) maintained its day before ratings and was up 8 percent year over year.
Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC won the most A18-49 viewers Tuesday with 1.8/6, according to Nielsen. ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise and Univision’s Mi Corazon Es Tuyo topped the 8p hour with 1.4/5. NBC’s America’s Got Talent was first at 9p with 2.2/7, versus 1.5/5 for Bachelor. Talent stayed in the lead at 10p with 2.0/7, followed by 1.2/4 for Telemundo’s Senor de los Cielos.
