Most viewers discover new shows by watching commercials on TV. According to Horizon Media’s Finger on the Pulse survey, 72 percent of viewers found out about new summer shows by watching TV spots, versus 28 percent from online and print reviews, 22 percent by word of mouth, 17 percent for radio or online streaming spots and 8 percent by outdoor media. Millennials skew highest on the WOM scale – 44 percent said their viewing was influenced by word of mouth, versus 14 percent for Baby Boomers.

Syfy’s Lost Girl will end after season five. “It’s time for Bo’s journey to come to an epic conclusion,” said star Anna Silk in a YouTube message Monday. Final season of the Canadian drama launches on Showcase up north December 7.

The Writers Guild of America is officially asking the FCC to oppose the proposed Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger by submitting formal opposition to the $45 billion agreement. “The deal would grant an unprecedented amount of power to a single entity, harm consumers and create a serious threat to competition,” said the guild in a statement, “because it does not meet the FCC’s criteria for serving the public interest.”

HBO and Paramount are teaming to develop Ashecliffe, based on the 2010 Martin Scorsese film Shutter Island. Scorsese will direct the pilot, from a script by author Dennis Lehane, who wrote the novel.

Fox issued a put pilot commitment for medical thriller The Cure, to be written by best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell (Outliers: The Story of Success) and Glenn Gordon Caron (Medium). Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox TV will produce.

IFC has put in development comedy Rabbit Hole, co-created and co-written by Jamie Denbo (Ronna & Beverly) and Kerry Kenney-Silver (Reno 911), from Chelsea Handler’s Borderline Amazing Prods.

Lifetime ordered six eps of Damien, based on the 1976 horror film The Omen, from Fox Television Studios. Glen Mazzara, Ross Fineman and Pancho Mansfield will exec produce the series, showing a grown-up Damien Thorn coming to terms with the fact that he’s the Antichrist.

Canada-based Corus Entertainment’s W Network ordered season three of Love it or List it Vancouver. The Big Coat Productions real estate series premiered on W in 2013; franchise airs in the U.S. on HGTV.

Rashida Jones and Will McCormack’s Le Train Train production company sold dramedy Mix to ABC. Writer Jennifer Cecil will exec produce with Jones and McCormack.

COMING UP

Naive newcomers who fall prey to big city dangers are the focus of new ID series Dead on Arrival. Premiere episode Wednesday, September 3 at 10p, tells the tragic story of young actress Rebecca Schaeffer, the victim of homicidal stalker.

Reelz is adding four shows to its fall lineup: reality series Celebrity Close Calls premiering Tuesday, September 30 at 9p, Jean-Claude Van Damme: Behind Closed Doors on Thursday, October 2 at 11p and Full Throttle Saloon Friday, October 3 at 11p, and documentary series Gangsters: America’s Most Evil on October 3 at 9p.

CBS’s The Price Is Right is looking for its first-ever male model. Starting Saturday, September 6, men 18 and older who think they’ve got what it takes to show off the Showcases can submit videos online, with fans submitting their votes for the final three contestants. Winner announced Monday, December 8, to begin a week-long modeling job on Monday, December 15.

Weather Channel’s “Survival Week” launches Sunday, August 31 with segments featuring survival stories on Wake Up with Al and AMHQ with Sam Champion, as well as new eps of survival-themed Fat Guys in the Woods and So You Think You’d Survive, along with Hurricane 360 and Weather Caught on Camera throughout the week in primetime.

Animal Planet is taking Labor Day literally, with a weekend of live animal births broadcast from the Nebraska Sate Fair on its first-ever “Labor Live” multimedia event. In between first looks at calves, lambs and piglets are daily marathons of Dirty Jobs from Friday, August 29-Monday, September 1.

Soda-sponsored Fanta for the Funny is drawing eyeballs. The comedy series of six-second Vines edited into 5- or 6-minute segments drew over 270,000 views on CollegeHumor.com and YouTube its first week, reports MediaPost, with a promotional Vine getting 437,000 loops. Purpose of the campaign: uniting teens around “their shared desire for fame and their shared passion for humor, while allowing them to be themselves and to connect their way,” said Racquel Mason, AVP Fanta and Flavors, of the effort from Fanta and agency 360i.

Automated TV buying platform AdMore and marketing software and analytics platform Turn are partnering. Admore’s 110M households will be integrated with the Turn platform to provide inventory access for data-driven marketing campaigns from Turn’s customers. “While programmatic is still in the early stages, there is no doubt that this year automation will become top-of-mind with both CMOs and CFOs who want to reach a targeted audience efficiently and effectively,” said Brendan Condon, CEO of AdMore and Media Properties Holdings.

RATINGS

CBS’s Big Brother scored a season high 2.5/8 among A18-49 Sunday night, according to preliminary Nielsens, its highest on any night this summer.

In the Nielsens, True Blood’s series finale Sunday drew 4 million viewers at 9p, on par with the season 6 finale last year and the June season 7 debut. The net’s The Leftovers hit a viewership high of 1.9 million at 10p.

Up against CBS’s football and MTV’s VMAs, Sunday’s finale of ABC singing competition Rising Star managed to jump 13 percent week to week among A18-49, to .9/3, drawing its biggest overall audience (3.2 million) in 3 weeks.

The season premiere of The Incredible Dr. Pol on Nat Geo WILD Saturday was the net’s highest rated August telecast ever, delivering 729,000 viewers P2+ and a 0.4 P25-54 rating.

HBO’s True Blood topped the list of Xfinity on Demand’s most-watched shows the week of August 10, followed by VH1’s Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, TNT’s The Last Ship, FX’s The Strain and E!’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
