The NFL has made a deal to have its NFL Now video-content service on Apple TV. The service provides game highlights and original content from the NFL and its 32 clubs. For $1.99 a month, fans can see in-game highlights and access both the NFL Films archive and more direct content from their favorite teams. However, NFL Now does not broadcast live games. The league is also about to make a deal with DirecTV for its Sunday Ticket package that will see its average annual rights fee increase to between $1.3 billion and $1.4 billion over the next decade. Details are still being discussed but an agreement is in place. The deal’s end date isn’t clear yet, but it will align with the league’s deals with ESPN, which runs through 2021, or CBS, Fox, and NBC, which run through 2022.

CONTENT MEDIA

When Miley Cyrus started cutting the rug Sunday night at MTV’s VMAs, Twitter went bonkers. According to stats released by the social-media site, the dance by Cyrus inspired 306,100 tweets per minute. During the famed Super Bowl blackout, there were 231,000 tweets per minute. Last year’s election night featured 327,452 tweets per minute. Cyrus was also a hit on Google, where more than 10 million searches for her took place Sunday.

According to Motley Fool, Google is finally moving ahead with its YouTube subscription music service. The service “will tap into YouTube’s trove of live concert footage, remixes, and song covers — music that’s mostly exclusive to YouTube.” It will also take away ads from music videos on YouTube as well as “allow for audio-only listening on mobile and integrate with Google Play Music All Access, Google’s current music subscription service.”

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Tom Hanks launched a typewriting app last week, Hanx Writer, and it went up to the top spot in four days. It’s free and replicates the feeling of typing on a real typewriter. It topped such apps RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile, YouTube, and Netflix.

Google dominates the online ad world due to its immense storehouse of data about consumer behavior. Amazon.com has its own massive database and is getting ready to face off with Google in this area, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Seattle-based company is “developing its own software for placing ads online.” The plan to start, the Journal notes, is “to replace those ads on its pages that Google chiefly supplies with a new in-house ad placement platform” and then down the line “that system could challenge Google’s $50 billion-a-year advertising business and Microsoft Corp’s.” Called Amazon Sponsored Links, it may start being tested later this year.

Turn and AdMore have formed a new partnership bringing together AdMore’s supply, data and measurement solutions with Turn’s data-driven audience insights.

TECHNOLOGY

Microsoft is getting into the streaming video business, according to new FCC filing found by Windows Phone Daily and Nokiapoweruser.  The device Microsoft is working on is called the HD-10 or Miracast, and is seen as a direct competitor to Google’s Chromecast, though the two products work in different ways. The device will allow users to project video content from their Windows phone to a TV. Gizmodo expects the device to be announced on Sept. 4 at a Lumia event.

TiVo is aiming for cord-cutters with its new Roamio OTA DVR model that can be connected to a digital over-the-air antenna, and does not contain a CableCARD slot. Just how limited the edition is depends on customer demand. TiVo says it’s ready to keep producing the Roamio OTA if consumers show real interest. All those folks affected by the recent Aereo ruling will surely be interested.

One of the world’s largest consumer electronics shows – IFA – is set to launch on Sept. 5 in Berlin and LG has announced that the two curved 4K Ultra-HD OLED televisions that will be shown there will be available for pre-order in South Korea this week, with availability in the UK, Europe, and North America soon to follow. LG considers the new sets to be “game-changing,” according to pocket-lint.com.

S3 Group has unveiled its StormTest Warning Center, a cloud-based platform that delivers real-time performance and service readiness insights for video platforms. Warning Center provides remote service monitoring, validation and real-time analytics of video services across connected devices on live networks.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Those involved with last night’s 66th Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC did everything they could to look and sound great to the millions around the world who were paying close attention to what was worn, what jokes were made, and what actually won an award or two.Ultimately, though, the Emmys will be a bit of a time capsule for future historians, just as this opening sequence from 20 years back, featuring Ellen DeGeneres and Patricia Richardson of “Home Improvement” fame, is already.
