IN THE NEWS
Family feud: The months-long legal battle between now-former Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman and Sumner Redstone may be over, but Keryn Redstone is demanding time to determine just how aware her 93-year-old grandfather was of Dauman’s $72 million severance package, and what role his daughter Shari had in the deal. “In the blink of an eye, plaintiffs have apparently turned tail, agreed to acquiesce in Shari’s palace coup, and suddenly seek to ‘go gentle into that good night’ with their pockets full of nearly $100 million,” read Keryn Redstone’s motion. “Inquiring minds want to – indeed, must – know why Plaintiffs have joined hands with Shari and are now abdicating to her.” Keryn, niece of Shari Redstone, is seeking permission to “analyze the documents to satisfy herself that they do not jeopardize her rights and reflect her grandfather’s true wishes.”
Recombining Viacom and CBS, both under Sumner Redstone’s National Amusements umbrella, would be the “optimal scenario” for Viacom and CBS shareholders, said BTIG’s Richard Greenfield in a post on Monday. “Creative talent loves [CBS CEO] Les Moonves, something which Viacom has sorely lacked for years under Dauman,” elaborated Greenfield, one of several influential analysts calling for the fix. “We believe an array of media executives would flock to Viacom for the opportunity to rebuild its cable network and film divisions under Moonves, with creative talent sure to follow.”
As expected, Billy Bush is replacing Willie Geist as co-host on hour three of NBC’s Today. Bush’s move to the morning show from NBCU’s Access Hollywood was announced in May, but specifics of the job weren’t revealed until Monday. Geist still has his hands full as host of the Sunday edition of Today and co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, among other jobs. “I’ve been wearing a lot of hats lately,” Geist said on yesterday’s show. “I’ve got to take one of the hats off.”
Monday was busy on Today Ryan Lochte’s interview with Matt Lauer continued, as the Olympic medalist admitted to “over-exaggerating” about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio, a tall tale he’d told Billy Bush last week. Admitting that, intoxicated, he had urinated in bushes at a gas station and damaged a display, leading to the demand for money, Lochte offered the people of Rio his “deepest apologies” for being less than honest. Not impressed: Speedo and Ralph Lauren, among the sponsors who cut ties with the swimmer.
21st Century Fox, Ryan Murphy and the cast of Scream Queens have jumped to the aid of Louisiana flood victims. 21CF donated $100,000 to the Louisiana Association of United Ways’ Flood Fund, and Murphy and Queens cast members filmed a PSA asking viewers to aid in the relief effort. “After shooting two series in New Orleans, I feel particularly connected to the state and the wonderful and talented people I’ve met there,” said Ryan. Two Murphy shows, American Horror Story and Scream Queens, have filmed in Louisiana, a film and TV production hub, as will Murphy’s upcoming Katrina: American Crime Story. 20th Century Fox Films’ Fantastic Four filmed there as well.
The Paley Center for Media’s PaleyFest Fall TV Preview will include a premiere screening and panel event with the cast of Starz’ Ash vs Evil Dead on Wednesday, September 14. Starz joins fellow first-timers Hulu and El Rey Network at the festival’s 10th gathering.
After collecting scores (and a team gold medal) at the Rio Olympics, gymnast Gabby Douglas will play judge herself for the 96th Miss America competition, airing Sunday, September 11 on ABC. Douglas and actress/musician Laura Marano (Austin & Ally) join Mark Cuban, actress Sara Foster (Barely Famous), singer-songwriter Cole Swindell and former Miss America Sharlene Wells Hawkes.
