WE tv gave the series greenlight for Sex Box, part of a makeover announced in June to broaden the net’s audience. Adapted from the UK series, the “extreme therapy” reality show has couples discuss their issues with experts, then enter a camera-free box on the set to have sex. After the deed, they discuss the experience. Produced by Relativity Television, the show offers viewers “the kind of bold, break-through-the-clutter programming they increasingly associate with WE tv,” said net president Marc Juris.

IN THE NEWS

Promising “a season unlike any in recent history,” ABC is touting a new studio and social media station for The View that will allow its hosts – Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell so far – to interact with viewers. The weekday talk show will also be branded with a new color scheme and logo, starting with its season premiere Monday, September 15 at 4p.

Comcast launched Xfinity on Campus, a streaming TV service that offers college students access to 80 live channels as well as On Demand shows and movies across their IP-enabled devices anywhere on campus. The service, included in room and board, will be available this fall at institutions including Bridgewater College, Drexel University, Emerson College, Lasell College and U of Delaware.

Sinclair Broadcast Group launched an original content division, focusing on entertainment content and business-to-consumer content like infomercials. Initially, Sinclair Original Programming will develop shows for SBG’s MyNetwork TV and CW affiliates and air in primetime and afternoon slots on weekends. “Controlling our content and its development not only reduces our dependency on others, providing a hedge against network disruptions, but allows us greater upside potential,” said Sinclair CEO David Smith.

What is it about Game of Thrones that has fans so engaged – and how can that type of connection translate to other viewing experiences? A new study from Latitude used self-recorded video from viewers enhanced by social commentary to understand their evangelistic engagement. Key insights include casting a wider net – the HBO drama has a “real variety and abundance of people and plotlines” to attract a diverse audience latching onto different elements – and encouraging social conversation without trying to control it.

The media company race to acquire production houses is heating up, reports the NY Post, and so are prices. Reality “used to be the least attractive part of the TV industry, but has been gaining in popularity,” Berenson & Co. banker Lisbeth Barron told the Post. “We’re seeing multiples paid in some cases as high as 11 to 12 times ebitda.” Some studios likely to attract attention from big media companies: Bray Entertainment (Pawn Stars), T Group (Swamp Hunters) and Ping Pong Productions (Hacking the System).

Former dance pro Julianne Hough is returning to Dancing with the Stars for season 19, this time as a regular on the judge’s panel. She joins Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. A two-time winner on the reality show, Hough has been a guest judge in previous seasons. DWTS returns Monday, September 15 at 8p.

Two-time Emmy winner Aaron Paul, nominated again for his Breaking Bad role, is sending fans on a Hollywood scavenger hunt Emmy night. Paul posted a photo on Instagram Wednesday promising signed scripts, “really cool” art, posters and action figures as a thank you to viewers for supporting the show. 66th Primetime Emmy Awards air Monday, August 25 at 8p on NBC.

TNT snatched network TV rights for the Hunger Games and Divergent franchises. The deal includes network premiere windows for Hunger Games’ upcoming Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, opening in theaters in November 2014 and 2015, and a second window to the first two Hunger Games, which will premiere on ABC Family, as well as all four Divergent films.

Among the nominees for the Environmental Media Awards are ABC’s Castle and Revenge and NBC’s Parenthood in the episodic drama category; Showtime’s House of Lies, ABC’s Modern Family and Fox’s New Girl for comedy and Fox/Nat Geo’s Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey, HBO’s Last Week with John Oliver and HBO’s Vice for reality TV. Awards, honoring environmentally conscious programming, are presented October 18 in Burbank.

Market research agency Screen Engine announced the acquisition of ASI Entertainment. Screen Engine will continue to focus primarily on film related research, while ASI, which will now be known as Screen Engine/ASI, will service the television and advertising industries.
