VEVO debuted a new series called A.K.A, to interview artists on how they chose their stage names. The first ep features hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea (formerly known as Amethyst Amelia Kelly). Series will highlight Daddy Yankee, Future, Common and others.

The Whistle inked a deal with Major League Soccer channel KickTV to distribute its content to the Xbox app. “This partnership will allow MLS and KickTV to reach an audience of 80 million engaged Xbox users who align very well with our target of young tech-savvy soccer fans,” MLS Digital Vice President Chris Schlosser said. The Whistle launched its Xbox 360 app earlier this month. MLS joins the network along with NFL, MLB and NASCAR.

Discovery Digital Networks is firing up the BBQ in a new branded series with Ball Park Brand hotdogs called America’s Finest Grill. The three-ep series, hosted by Tekzilla’s Patrick Norton, features a 19-foot grill that includes seating for eight, beer taps and a sound system. The first installment is available at Destination America’s site and YouTube channel.

Comcast is going back to college with its new streaming TV service Xfinity on Campus. Students living in school housing will be able to watch 80 live TV channels and On Demand programming on any mobile device while on campus. Subscribers can also upgrade to premium channels HBO, Showtime, STARZ and others as well as get the cloud-based DVR service. XOC is currently available at seven schools: Bridgewater College, Drexel University, Emerson College, Lasell College and U of Delaware.

AEG Live is bringing its music and artists to NCM’s FirstLook pre-movie series in a multi-year deal, including a Shazam integration. “The Shazam connection means that fans can purchase concert tickets or music from their seats,” AEG Live Senior Vice President Marketing Amy Morrison said. “Having the ability to market directly to a captive audience is another example of the services that AEG Live provides to its artists.”

Clothing brand PacSun and multi-channel network StyleHaul stars launched a four-part video series to help back-to-school shoppers with fashion ideas. The MCN’s beauty and fashion experts BeyondBeautyStar, Macbby11, MyLifeAsEva and MamaMiaMakeup (who collectively reach 3.5 million subscribers), will supply advice on their individual channels, using PacSun’s fall line. Viewers can also submit their own ideas. The series will run until the end of September.

Lenovo and The Onion are launching season two of fantasy football web series Tough Season. Last year’s eight-episode first season garnered 13.5 million views, and the new 13-ep arc will include four bonus videos to be released throughout the football season as well as a new companion series titled Owner’s Box. OB is a parody of Showtime’s Inside the NFL, and will offer real-time NLF fantasy football news with Tough Season’s main character as the focus. The show is in partnership with DigitasLBi.

Two-time Emmy winner Aaron Paul, nominated again for his Breaking Bad role, is sending fans on a Hollywood scavenger hunt Emmy night. Paul posted a photo on Instagram Wednesday promising signed scripts, “really cool” art, posters and action figures as a thank you to viewers for supporting the show. 66th Primetime Emmy Awards air Monday, August 25 at 8p on NBC.

Get ready iTunes, Spotify and Pandora: SoundCloud will now incorporate advertising and let artists and labels collect royalties. The New York Times reports the six-year start-up has more than 175 million people on its platform each month around the world – four times the Spotify user base. The company will allow some record labels to have equity in the company, to prevent copyright issues. SoundCloud will also introduce a new ad-free subscription service, called Premier. The first adverts include Red Bull, Jaguar and Comedy Central; content partners include Sony/ATV, BMG and Funny or Die.

Instagram will now give advertisers instant access to data about the effectiveness of their posts. The data will be revealed in real-time, and focus on impressions, reach and engagement on paid and unpaid posts. “Brand marketers will be able to better understand the best time of day to post a photo or video,” Instagram said in its blog announcement. The photo-sharing app first started selling ads last year.

Millennials love their music — and while they want artists to be paid, they don’t want to be the ones shelling out the bucks. Enter brands and corporations, who are no longer considered "uncool" in the modern music industry, as Revolt CEO Kevin Clinkscales tells Cynsiders.

RESEARCH

People are spending the majority of their time on apps while using mobile devices, according to comScore’s latest U.S. Mobile App Report. As of June, apps account for seven of every eight minutes a user spends on mobile media, a 52 percent growth over last year and a 24 percent increase in time spent on digital media. The top app goes to Facebook for time spent and audience size, but Google, Apple, Yahoo, Amazon and eBay follow behind. Additionally, the study found smartphone users download at least one app a month and 57 percent access those apps every day, with 26 percent tablet users doing the same. Android accounts for 83.8 million smartphone users, and iPhone has 70 million users.

HYFN hired Peter Pouliopoulos as the Executive Vice President of Client Partnerships and Marketing. He was most recently the Executive Vice President of Sales at multi-channel network Machinima.
