Billy Crystal will lead the Emmy tribute to his long-time friend Robin Williams at Sunday’s awards show. “We felt we needed to do something powerful and memorable,” said producer Don Mischer. “Billy seemed like the perfect choice.” Williams, who last year honored Jonathan Winters in the Emmys’ In Memoriam segment, was found dead on August 11 at age 63.

IN THE NEWS

Change is in the wind at Turner. CEO John Martin sent a memo to staffers on Tuesday alerting them to a restructuring that will be communicated in the next two months. “We’ll start 2015 a more streamlined, nimble and efficient company,” said Martin, “focused on driving programming, monetization and innovation.” The exec’s message reiterates his sentiment in a June 2 memo, describing a “Turner 2020” initiative focused on “reducing spending and maximizing growth and profitability.”

NBC canceled summer series Working the Engels, pulling it from the lineup tonight in favor of an extra helping of Welcome to Sweden. The show premiered to 2.7 million viewers, but had dropped to 1.9 million. Engels’ fellow summer scripted series The Night Shift, Undateable and Sweden have all gotten renewals from the net.

Firing back at Al Gore over the former Vice President’s charges of breach of contract and fraud over its purchase of CurrenTV, Al Jazeera said in a statement, “The lawsuit and statement simultaneously issued by Al Gore’s celebrity trial lawyer were designed to grab headlines with misleading accusations like ‘fraud’ and ‘price discount. This is an ordinary commercial dispute, of the type courts decide all the time.” Gore and CurrenTV co-founder Joel Hyatt claim Al Jazeera attempted to seize $65 million held in escrow.

CBS is offering a double dose of the Madame Secretary series premiere on Sunday, September 21, due to live coverage of The NFL on CBS. Season 47 of 60 Minutes starts off the night at 7:30p ET, followed by Madame Secretary at 8:30p, the season five premiere of The Good Wife at 9:30p and a Secretary encore at 10:30p.

Season one of Mom will run for four weeks on TBS ahead of the launch of season two on CBS. Starting Monday, August 25, the comedy airs weeknights at 7:30p after The Big Bang Theory. “It’s my hope that this incredible platform will allow people who might not have seen the show on CBS a chance to get acquainted with it,” said exec producer Chuck Lorre. “And perhaps that acquaintance can turn into an ongoing relationship.” Mom’s launches Monday, September 29 at 8:30.

The star of OWN’s Iyanla: Fix My Life, Iyanla Vanzant, broke with the show’s format to travel to Ferguson, MO, amid protests and unrest following the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, by a white police officer on August 9. A spiritual life coach who specializes in conflict resolution, Vanzant said she hopes to “provide a set of tools to begin the healing process while also promoting peaceful change.” Episode date tbd.

The NFL is considering charging A-list acts to pay for the privilege of performing at halftime during the Super Bowl, reports the Wall Street Journal. With Rihanna, Katy Perry and Coldplay on their short list of contenders for a 2015 slot, the league asked at least some acts for a financial contribution in return for the high-profile gig, said WSJ – adding the suggestion got “a chilly reception.” Last year’s halftime show drew a record 115.3 million viewers.

Former Entertainment Tonight correspondent Kevin Frazier returns to the magazine show Tuesday, September 9, replacing Rob Marciano as co-host. Frazier’s spot as The Insider co-host will be filled by Louis Aguirre, co-anchor of Miami show Deco Drive.

The re-building of One World Trade Center is the topic of Crowning New York, premiering on Smithsonian Channel Sunday, September 7 at 8p. Documentary from Pulse3TV includes never-before-seen footage of the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “It is not often that a story about a building stirs deep human emotion, but Crowning New York is about defiance, resurrection and triumph over evil,” David Royale, EVP, programming and production for Smithsonian Channel, tells Cynopsis. “We are proud to take our viewers on a visually stunning journey.”

Take flight, Seattle Seahawks – Hallmark is launching the Feline Football League, with adoptable kittens competing (with celeb assistance) on obstacle courses for a spot in the net’s Kitten Bowl II on Super Bowl Sunday. “The newly inducted league makes it possible for Crown Media to build a world-class programming and merchandising franchise around Kitten Bowl,” said Bill Abbott, president and CEO, Crown Media Family Networks, “while still shining a spotlight on the incredibly beautiful and talented pets available for adoption.”

RETURNING SERIES

AMC picked up Halt and Catch Fire for a sophomore run. While the drama about the rise of the PC era didn’t deliver a Walking Dead-size crowd, the net notes “a committed core audience and notable critical acclaim.” Not to leave out Nielsens: season one of Halt was one of the most upscale dramas on ad-supported television, reports the net, number three among A18-49 and number four among A25-54. “We have a history of demonstrating patience through the early seasons of new shows, betting on talent and building audience over time,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “We see that opportunity here.”

Showtime gave season three orders to summer series Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex. The dramas are “quintessentially Showtime: bold, provocative, premium television with production values at the top of the food chain,” said David Nevins, president, Showtime Networks. Masters is averaging nearly four million viewers across platforms per week, while Donovan is averaging five million weekly.

TV One’s Celebrity Crime Files, investigating the scandals, misdeeds and mysterious deaths of celebs, landed rapper/actor Ice-T as narrator for season three, premiering Monday, September 8 at 10p. But that’s not the only change for the docu-series. “Though crimes involving celebrities are both fascinating and shocking, this season the series will broaden its lineup by reexamining historically significant events and include topics that have captured the attention of America over the decades,” D’Angela Proctor, SVP programming and production tells Cynopsis.

Syndicated Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court is back for season two Monday, September 22. The daytime courtroom series, distributed by Orion TV Productions, can be seen in 92 percent of the country.

Relationship drama Full Circle landed a 10-ep second season at DirecTV, reports TVLine. Story by Keith Huff (House of Cards) will focus on a man dealing with the consequences of putting his father-in-law in prison 28 years earlier.

The Paley Center for Media’s annual LA gala will celebrate the role TV has played in the issue of LGBT equality. “From All in the Family, Soap, All My Children, An Early Frost, LA Law and Roseanne to Will & Grace, The Real World, Ellen, Six Feet Under, The L Word, Glee, Modern Family and dozens more, television has reshaped and redefined American identity and culture and has led to important social change,” said Maureen Reidy, president & CEO of the Center. “We believe this is the perfect time to celebrate television’s role in LGBT progress.” Event takes place Wednesday, November 12 at the Skirball Cultural Center.
