Elizabeth Vargas has checked herself back into a recovery center, the 20/20 co-anchor revealed in a statement. “As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process,” said Vargas, who entered a treatment facility in 2013. “I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease.” Said ABC, “We stand squarely behind her…and we look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return.”

IN THE NEWS

A video shot by a Ferguson, MO resident aired on CNN’s New Day Monday, purportedly showing the aftermath of the Michael Brown shooting. The unarmed black teenager, shot and killed by a police officer August 9, is seen lying dead in the street. The woman taking the video, Piaget Crenshaw, told CNN, “The fact that he got shot in the face, it was something that clicked in me like, no somebody else needs to see this, this isn’t right.” Crenshaw said she waited to release the video out of concern for her safety.

It will be hard to miss NBC’s The Blacklist in the coming weeks. Images of star James Spader, in character as criminal mastermind Red Reddington, will stare out from mock covers on the back of 10 magazines (Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and the New Yorker among them), and on the front cover of Playboy. Also part of the comprehensive effort: billboards, wallscapes and a roundup of Red one-liners set to AC/DC classic “Back in Black” in heavy rotation on NBC and NBCUniversal cable nets. “The size and scope of this campaign speak to both the importance of the series to NBC and the creative ways in which we can get that message out,” said Len Fogge, president of marketing and digital for NBC Entertainment. Season two of the drama debuts Monday, September 22 at 10p.

Aereo shouldn’t have a chance to argue that it’s a cable company, said a coalition of broadcasters in court papers filed Friday. The streaming service “has been trampling on Plaintiffs’ copyrights for over two years and has collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in subscriber fees while doing so,” broadcasters claim, saying they are “entitled to an injunction protecting their rights.” The Supreme Court ruled against Aereo in June, forcing suspension of service, but it hopes to make the case that it’s a cable company, eligible for a content license that would require it to pay royalties but not the higher fees charged by broadcasters.

Move over, Catherine Bell and Lori Loughlin – there’s a new star ready for a Hallmark Channel close-up. The net has adopted “Happy,” a rescue cat that will make its debut as Team Captain and ambassador during Kitten Bowl II, premiering Super Bowl Sunday, 2015, then star in upcoming movies, series and specials. “’Happy’ reminds us that with shelter pets it’s not about pedigree, it’s about family,” said Bill Abbott, president and CEO, Crown Media Family Networks. “In addition to loving and caring for ‘Happy,’ we look forward to utilizing the cat as an ambassador and star-in-the-making to show the world what incredibly beautiful animals are available at your local shelter.”

National Geographic was number one on digital data company Shareablee’s list of top social media publishers for July, with 46.4 million engaged actions across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. In (distant) second: Huffington Post, with 12.8 million actions.
