The IAB: The IAB, or Interactive Advertising Bureau, is a major advertising trade organization. It helps conduct research and develop industry standards for the online ad industry.
TOP NEWS
Univision Communications may be buying Gawker Media for $135 million, but that won’t save the company’s flagship site. Gawker has announced that Gawker.com will cease operations next week. Gawker’s six other sites, which include Gizmodo, Deadspin, and Jezebel, appear to have been the real prize for Univision. With the acquisition, Univision continues its push into English-language, millennial-friendly digital outlets like The Onion and Fusion. Gawker Media’s remaining sites will be merged into Fusion Media Group, Univision’s English-language digital media division.
Pinterest has begun rolling out native video ads. The ads, which appear in a silent, GIF-like format, are being used by brands such as bareMinerals and Kate Spade. The move puts Pinterest in competition with other major social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat, all of which offer video advertising. “Candidly, the company just in general has underinvested until now in video as a platform,” Jon Kaplan, Pinterest’s global sales chief, told the New York Times. “We wanted to make sure it was customized and specific to the way people use our platform. What you’re going to see going forward is a very big investment in video.”
T-Mobile is launching the T-Mobile One plan, a subscription option that grants customers unlimited talk, text, and 4G LTE smartphone data for $70 per month. The one catch is that T-Mobile will cap video services at standard-definition quality; a $25-per-month add-on is required for unlimited HD service.
AD TECH
Videology, the software provider for converged TV and video advertising, announced new improvements in its ability to use predictive targeting to improve performance against comScore’s validated Campaign Essentials (vCE) and Nielsen’s Digital Ad Ratings (DAR). With these new improvements, fueled by data integrations and platform advancements, Videology says it can now achieve “in-demo” accuracy at scale, better predicting and delivering ratings within targeted age and gender parameters. “Since digital ratings were introduced, we have been working to bridge the natural disconnect that occurs when an advertiser targets on one set of data, then validates on the backend with a different set of data,” said Aleck Schleider, Videology’s SVP of Data and Analytics. “Over the past few months, we have dramatically increased ratings delivery predictability and performance for our platform uses. This improvement coincides with the increased use of digital ratings for video campaigns, and will save our advertiser and publisher clients millions of dollars in lost opportunity.”

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
Defy Media has teamed with the production company 3 Ball Entertainment, the company behind Spike’s Bar Rescue. The two companies will develop original content for Defy Media’s YouTube channels. First up: How It’s Destroyed, a series that demonstrates how pieces of complex machinery, such as satellites and retired submarines, are disposed of. How It’s Destroyed is an original concept developed by 3 Ball; it’ll debut later this year on Defy’s AWEme channel, and receive marketing and social promotion from Defy’s media network and AWEme’s social platforms.
Smithsonian Channel will launch a second season of its original digital series Wild Inside the National Zoo. Like season one, the six-episode second season will focus on stories of animal life at Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The season premieres on August 20 across all of Smithsonian Channel’s digital platforms, including its mobile and connected TV apps, its website, and its YouTube channel. Both seasons will also be available later this year on Smithsonian Earth, Smithsonian Networks’ 4K streaming video service.
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
Sometimes job listings can give your intentions away. Case in point: Amazon is clearly preparing to produce its own virtual reality content, if a new LinkedIn post is any guide. The post calls for a “Virtual Reality Experience Development Executive.” “Amazon Studios has an opening for an experienced content development executive to help develop innovative mixed reality experiences for distribution on Amazon Video,” the listing reads.
PLATFORMS + DEVICES
Discovery Communications’ slate of TV Everywhere offerings has launched for Roku devices, according to an announcement from Roku and Discovery. Discovery’s “GO” suite of offerings is the company’s first TV Everywhere streaming offering; it features on-demand, live, and next-day access to networks and programming.
The New York Times will shutter NYT Now, its app providing a curated list of stories for a lower price than a full digital subscription. The app launched in 2014, but failed to reach a broad enough audience.
FOTV Media Networks Inc., an interrelated group of digital media companies that produces and distributes video, hologram, VR and 360-degree content, announced the launch of an initial public offering of a minimum of 2,500,000 shares of common stock and a maximum of 3,750,000 shares of common stock at $8.00 per share. FOTV expects the offering to close in September. FOTV includes FilmOn.TV Networks, Inc., Hologram USA, FOTV Productions, Inc., CinemaNow, LLC, and OVGuide, Inc.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Twitter says it is making a new quality filter available to all users. When activated, it will filter “lower-quality content” – such as duplicate tweets or content that appears to be automated – from notifications and “other parts of your Twitter experience.” It doesn’t filter any content from accounts that the user follows or has interacted with.
DEALS + COMPANY ACQUISITIONS
SendtoNews, a company specializing in the syndication of sports highlights video, announced a new deal with McClatchy. SendtoNews will supply McClatchy with sports video highlights, for use across the news group’s network of sites.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
The next gen studio Indigenous Media has announced a new hire. John Zhang will serve as EVP of Marketing. Zhang previously served as Vice President of Marketing at DanceOn. He’ll report to Jake Avnet, Indigenous Media’s Chief Operating Officer.
