IN THE NEWS

Comedy Central canceled The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, a victim of stagnant ratings. The late nighter created and exec produced by Jon Stewart replaced The Colbert Report in January 2015; it will air its final episode on Thursday. @midnight slips into the slot temporarily. “I’m really grateful to Comedy Central, Jon Stewart, and our fans to have had this opportunity,” Wilmore said in a statement. “But I’m also saddened and surprised we won’t be covering this crazy election or ‘The Unblackening’ as we’ve coined it. And keeping it 100, I guess I hadn’t counted on ‘The Unblackening’ happening to my time slot as well.” Comedy Central president Kent Alterman said that while he applauded Wilmore and his creative team, the show “just wasn’t resonating with our audience.”

Texas-based private equity firm TPG Capital announced it has agreed to pay $1.6 billion for RCN Telecom Services and $640 million for Grande Communications Networks, with the aim of combining them to form a U.S. cable company. (Also in the mix with a minority stake, according to the Wall Street Journal: Google.) “There is an unprecedented amount of diverse, creative content being produced that is extremely bandwidth intensive,” said TPG partner David Trujillo. “High-speed data has become, and will remain, the essential connection for both consumers and businesses. Both RCN and Grande are proven leaders in providing fast, affordable, and reliable data services.”

The 11 largest pay-TV operators lost 665,000 net video subscribers in 2Q16, according to data from Leicthman Research, versus 545,00 in the period a year prior. “Over the past year, the top pay-TV providers (including DISH’s Sling TV) lost about 705,000 subscribers  compared to a loss of about 380,000 over the prior year,” said company president Bruce Leichtman. The news was a little brighter for the top six cable companies, with a 225,00 dip in video subscribers in 2Q16, a slowdown from 340,000 in 2Q15.

As comedy increasingly caters to millennials, the genre is changing, notes cultural insights agency TruthCo. in a new study analyzing over 150 shows. “Making content that is both shareable and challenging, distinctive voices like Aziz Ansari and Samantha Bee are carving out powerful platforms in the comedy landscape that until recently may have been considered niche,” said Alix Korn, cultural analyst. “Though the universal human truths remain the same, comedy today is taking on that truth with fresh styles, tones, and targets.”

Comedy’s not the only genre TruthCo.’s eyeing. Cynopsis asked for the team’s take on why HBO’s dark new series is generating such buzz, and here’s what they had to say: “The Night Of reads as an elevation of the police procedural for the true-crime age. The show is particularly notable because instead of featuring an outright villain, it turns the genre’s investigatory eye onto the workings of the criminal justice system itself. This speaks to a cultural moment in which we are reappraising and taking stock of institutions that we may no longer trust.”

Don’t You Remember: The NFL and Super Bowl sponsor Pepsi say no official offer was made to Adele to perform during the 2017 halftime show. After the “Hello” singer told fans during a concert in LA that she’d declined an offer because “That show is not about music,” the football league and Pepsi issued a statement saying that although they are “big fans” of Adele, they have had conversations with several artists, and “have not at this point extended a formal offer” to anyone.

Lockheed Martin has partnered with Discovery Education for the next phase of “Generation Beyond,” an initiative to use STEM education to prepare middle school students to study deep space exploration. The free program includes an online curriculum for teachers and families.
