IN THE NEWS

CBS is foregoing “air-conditioned skyboxes” for Democratic and Republican convention coverage in favor of participants “on the ground,” said CBS News president David Rhodes at TCA. As for limiting the number of candidates in the CBS-aired debates on November 14 (Dem.) and February 13 (GOP), as Fox News did, Rhodes said a decision would be made closer to the dates. Face The Nation’s John Dickerson was named principal moderator.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Showtime’s Twin Peaks will rise after some initial backstage drama. Network chief David Nevins said at TCA the sequel will head into production in September with David Lynch onboard as director/executive producer.

More romance is in store at The CW. The network is developing a series based on the Nicholas Sparks novel The Notebook, which is being written by Todd Graff. Graff is also an executive producer alongside Theresa Park and Sparks, for Nicholas Sparks Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The Notebook was made into a hit feature film in 2004.

COMING UP

The Weather Channel is marking the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with a week of cross-platform programming August 24-28. The slate includes a visit to two cities devastated by the storm in Katrina: 10 Years Later, and Katrina 2065, a Sam Champion-hosted look at likely scenarios if Hurricane Katrina hit 50 years from now.

Kendrick Lamar will be Stephen Colbert‘s first musical guest when Colbert slides into the chair at The Late Show on September 8. Colbert said at TCA it was fitting for Lamar to kick off the new show since the rapper was his last musical guest on The Colbert Report.

Showtime is stepping up its presence in the documentary field, CEO David Nevins announced at TCA. On the slate for late 2015 are docs about Marlon Brando, Jimi Hendrix, Barney Frank and Warren Jeffs, as well as in-depth interviews with all 12 living CIA directors Additionally, New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz’s rags to riches story will be the subject of I Am Giant: Victor Cruz, a Showtime Sports original film set to premiere this fall. The network will also debut rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight’s story American Dream/American Knightmare on September 26 at 9p.

Sony Movie Channel presents a lineup of classic films during September in its “Take Two” Tuesday block, every week in primetime. The network’s roster includes everything from ‘70s masterpieces to ‘90s noir to fantasy flicks.

NEW SERIES

George Lopez is heading back to the sitcom stage with the TV Land launch of Lopez, a comedy scheduled to premiere in 2016. John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky are writing and exec-producing.

Copycat theme week: Who’s the better goofy sidekick, The Honeymooners’ (1955-56) Ed Norton or The Flintstones’ (1960-66) Barney Rubble? Let us know in today’s Cynopsis poll.

RETURNING SERIES

TNT renewed action-adventurer The Last Ship for a third season. Season two of the series, basic cable’s top scripted summer series among A25-54, according to Nielsen data, wraps September 6.

The CW is standing behind unscripted series Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Whose Line Is It Anyway? Following strong runs this summer, both are getting renewed for 2016.

New challenges and opportunities for Buddy Valastro are baked into the seventh season of Cake Boss, which will return to TLC with a two-hour event Tuesday, September 7 at 8p.

Showtime has picked up dramas Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex for fourth seasons. Both head into production in 2016 with 12-episdoe orders.

CASTING

Country artist Jennifer Nettles, Gerald McRaney and Ricky Schroder have joined the cast of NBC’s upcoming TV movie Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors. Based on the story of Parton’s upbringing in the Great Smokey Mountains, the movie was written by Pamela K. Long, who exec-produces with Sam Haskell and Parton.

Matt Ryan will reprise the role of John Constantine on an episode of The CW’s Arrow. Ryan played the character on NBC’s canceled Constantine. “It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series," said Arrow exec producer Marc Guggenheim. Constantine was produced by Warner Bros., co-owner of The CW. Season four of Arrow premieres Wednesday, October 7 at 8p.

Britney Spears will make a guest appearance in an upcoming episode of Jane The Virgin on The CW. The “Oops!…I Did It Again” singer’s role is still under wraps. Season two of Jane launches Monday, October 12 at 9p.

ADVERTISING

What do advertisers need to do to catch viewers’ attention? “Linear TV advertising needs to break its own conventions,” advises Linda Ong, CEO of TruthCo., which recently released a study, The New World of Advertising. “Culturally, the advertisers that don’t abide by traditional :30 conventions thrive,” Ong tells Cynopsis. “Emergent brands use self-awareness as a marketing tool, leveraging expectations by intentionally subverting them, creating a shock that makes a lasting impression that the brand gets credit for. The recent ‘Unskippable’ GEICO spots are a terrific example of this. Instead of solely being content interruptors, they are content creators and co-conspirators, winking at the audience by playing with both style and form. Getting everyone talking is the first step today in creating awareness and ultimately, action. By the way, this holds for promos as well.”

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Ovation acquired U.S. premiere rights to Seasons 1 and 2 of U.K. competition series Portrait Artist of the Year from Zodiak Rights. The series will premiere on Ovation on October 18.

AT&T expanded its streaming option to include DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket for those who are unable to put a satellite dish on their residence (apartment, college dorm, etc.) but want to subscribe to the service offered by the satellite company. AT&T purchased DirecTV in July.
