Actor and comedian Robin Williams died Monday at the age of 63. He first became nationally known from TV’s Mork & Mindy, which ran from 1978 to 1982. He won an Oscar for his role in the film Good Will Hunting. The cause of death is believed to be suicide via asphyxiation. He was found on his home. The New York Times quoted Susan Schneider, Williams’ wife, "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one if its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

IN THE NEWS

Showtime is launching season four of Homeland with back-to-back eps on Sunday, October 5 at 9p. “In the aftermath of Homeland’s stunning finale last season [Carrie pregnant with Brody’s baby, overseas assignment], there is such strong anticipation for the start of season four that we wanted to give fans an extra generous helping,” said EVP of programming Gary Levine. The net is jumping on that wave of excitement to push up the premiere of new drama The Affair by a week, to October 12.

E!’s Chelsea Lately ends its seven-year run with a live finale on Tuesday, August 26 at 11p – a bold move for the net outspoken host Chelsea Handler once called a “sad, sad place to live.” But bold is likely ratings gold. Among the A-listers stopping by for the host’s send-off (Jennifer Aniston! Sandra Bullock!) will be Handler’s ex, rap star 50 Cent, the first time they’ll be together since breaking up, according to E!. And closing the show is a musical number with dozens of celebs the net promises “will blow the roof off Stage 1.” Handler’s next stop: Netflix, where she’s signed a deal for specials and a talk show.

Male-targeting Grit and female-focused Escape launch Monday, August 18 at noon with films High Noon and Body Heat, respectively. Nets from Katz Broadcasting are cleared in 50 percent of the country.

The marketing campaign for SundanceTV’s The Honorable Woman, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, includes a Layer app allowing viewers to hold their smart phones or tablets over images on sundance.tv or on Facebook to find clues to upcoming episodes. The net also partnered with Brainfall for online personality quizzes. Drama airs Thursdays at 10p.

A quickie teaser for AMC’s Better Call Saul reveals the Breaking Bad spinoff will premiere in February. The drama has already been renewed for season two.
