Good morning. It’s Friday August 5, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Olympics and Yahoo extended their existing digital alliance to include content and promotion surrounding the Olympics. The alliance offers Yahoo’s US audience with links to all of NBCOlympics.com’s exclusive live streamed events and video highlights. “Yahoo will once again push its massive U.S. audience to links that quickly connect them with NBCOlympics.com’s unprecedented live stream coverage and vast collection of video highlights,” said Rick Cordella, Senior Vice President & General Manager, NBC Sports Digital. “The Yahoo-NBC Sports partnership has been a win-win and we are delighted to extend it to include these Rio Olympics.”

ON THE AIR

NBCSN scored 1.3 million viewers for the U.S. women’s soccer team’s win over New Zealand on the opening day of soccer competition at the Rio Olympics. That bests – by 107% – viewership for the team’s 2012 London Olympics opener. Overall, the match averaged a .77 rating on NBCSN  up 93% from the women’s soccer opener in 2012.

Meanwhile, tonight sees NBC deliver the Opening Ceremony of the Rio Games at 7:30p. Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, and Hoda Kotb serve as hosts, while Bob Costas opens the telecast with Michele Tafoya and Ros Gold-Onwude reporting from Macarana Stadium. David Feherty joins the show to discuss golf’s return to the Games and feature a portion of his interview with President Barack Obama.

ESPN offers up its own tradition this weekend with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony with the addition of the Hall of Fame Game for the first time. Coverage begins Saturday at 7p with Trey Wingo anchoring ESPN’s telecast of the Enshrinement Ceremony, joined by Adam Schefter, national Sal Paolantonio and Tom Jackson, who will make his farewell appearance after a 29-year career at ESPN. In addition, ESPN host Chris Berman will emcee the Enshrinement Ceremony for the 17th year. The Hall of Fame Game will then see new MNF play-by-play voice Sean McDonough will make his debut with analyst Jon Gruden on Sunday at 8p.

Speaking of ESPN, the company reached a new contract extension with Senior Fantasy Analyst Matthew Berry that runs through 2021. Berry will continue to write for ESPN.com, host ESPN’s “Fantasy Focus Football” podcast, serve as lead fantasy analyst for Fantasy Football Kickoff and Fantasy Football Now on ESPN2, as well as make regular appearances on NFL Monday Night Countdown, Sunday NFL Countdown, NFL Live, and SportsCenter on ESPN, and more.

The Open drove Golf Channel to its most-watched July in the network’s 21-year history, with benchmarks that included its most-watched day ever and place as the No. 1 sports network during the network’s inaugural coverage of The Open. Overall, Golf Channel drew more than 16 million unique viewers in July for a 17% rise over 2015, according to Nielsen. “This surge in viewership is a result of investment in high-quality programming to reach more viewers across all platforms,” said Mike McCarley, President, golf, NBC Sports Group. “We look for this momentum to continue with the unprecedented slate of upcoming events, including golf’s return to the Olympics, the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs and a Ryder Cup hosted in the U.S.”

NHL Network tackles the league’s best players with four new countdown series starting Saturday with Top 20 Forwards Right Now at 9:30p. Aug. 13 at 7p will see Top 20 Defensemen Right Now, Top 10 Goalies Right Now on Aug. 20, and Top  50 Players Right Now on Aug. 21 featuring players ranked 50-41.

Speaking of hockey, the NHL locked in a deal with Sport1 for exclusive coverage in Germany (non-exclusive for Austria and Switzerland) for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey 2016.

Back to the Olympics, ESPN’s SportsCenter will originate full live programs from the site of an Olympic Games with five shows spanning Aug. 8-12, with Hannah Storm anchoring each day at 10a. The one-hour programs will feature interviews with athletes and other newsmakers.

SiriusXM launched a special channel dedicated to the 2016 Rio Olympics to listeners nationwide, including live play-by-play of Olympic events as well as daily news, commentary and highlights from Rio Report and other programs. The channel airs 24 hours a day on SiriusXM channel 106 and will be presented in association with Westwood One which, in partnership with U.S. Olympic rightsholder NBCUniversal, is providing live radio coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics. At 10p each night, Tonight in Rio recaps the day with Chris Spatola and Jim Noble will host a daily morning show, Rio Report.

Sports Jeopardy! will debut on NBCSN on Saturday at midnight, running each evening on the channel for two consecutive weeks, until the conclusion of the Rio Games. The show then returns in the fall of 2016 and air weekly on Wednesday nights.  Episodes airing on NBCSN in the fall will include categories and clues featuring NBC Sports commentators, as well as highlights of NBC Sports Group’s live events.

According to the company, the campaign is designed to center “on the insight that every human body contains 0.2 milligrams of gold, and campaign elements tell the story of the grit of seven U.S. Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls as they attempt to dig out their own gold from within.” Kerri Walsh Jennings and Claressa Shields take part as do Daryl Homer, Danell Leyva, Lex Gillette, Laura Ryan and Kristin Smith. In addition, DICK’S will be donating $1000 to select youth sports organizations that are part of the USOC family through its “Every Medal” program.

PGA TOUR Champions is launching four new 30-second commercials on Golf Channel as part of a Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs campaign this week. The commercials will debut during Thursday’s coverage of the PGA TOUR’s Travelers Championship, and will be featured over the next three months leading into the inaugural Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, continuing the “Where Legends Play” campaign introduced earlier this year.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Bleacher Report inked a deal with University of Notre Dame football for an exclusive social content partnership throughout the season. The B/R social team will be embedded with the football program in South Bend and travel with the team to road games throughout the season to create custom content for the program’s national fan base with access to practice, locker room, game day activities, home and away games, travel, academic classrooms and more via a weekly video feature, Facebook Live streams, shareable social packages and game day Snapchat takeovers.

Audio network TuneIn is pairing with NBCUniversal to carry Westwood One’s coverage of the Rio Games. “We’re excited to extend our relationship with Westwood One to bring our listeners exciting live Olympic content from Rio,” said Kevin Straley, Chief Content Officer for TuneIn. “This marks the first time TuneIn has streamed live Olympic content to fans in the U.S., and the opportunity to bring the sounds from the venues in Rio to a mobile and digital listener on the go is what makes TuneIn an essential destination for sports fans.”

The Topps Company and its digital platform, Topps MLB Bunt announced that New York Mets Hall of Famer Mike Piazza will conducts a real time customized digital autograph signing this weekend as part of The Baseball Card Show in Atlantic City. The move marks the first time TOPPS will conduct a virtual signing in real time for a global audience, after a successful test of the platform during the All-Star Game in San Diego.

Blizzard Entertainment is launching an Overwatch competition at BlizzCon in November. The new Overwatch World Cup will see players from their countries faceoff in matches generated by fan voting, which begins on Aug. 11. Voting will target players instead of teams with 60 countries set to take part. Following online qualifiers, the top 16 teams will come together to compete live at BlizzCon.

ESL deepened its partnership with Microsoft and Forza Motorsport to support and broadcast the Forza Racing Championship. The one month event will see the Elite Series crown the best Forza player in the world and will award him/her with a brand new 2017 Ford Focus RS. Top players will also receive prizes from Xbox, Microsoft and Logitech, including: Xbox One S consoles, Xbox Elite controllers, Logitech wheels and more.

Bud Light released the first entry in a five part series produced by Machinima showcasing the lives of five eSports athletes  aka the Bud Light All-Stars.
