TCA TALK

ABC’s retro game show lineup forges on: the network has picked up all four revivals of Match Game, $100,000 Pyramid, Celebrity Family Feud and To Tell the Truth.

ABC has ordered second installments of ABCd series Forever 31, I Can Find $3000 in Your Home and Newborn Moms for the newly relaunched ABC app. Additionally, the net has acquired two new series. American Koko, from Diarra Kilpatrick and Viola Davis’ JuVEe Productions, follows a satirical agency that solves sticky racial situations. I Like You Just the Way I Am, from New York Times best-selling author and actress Jenny Mollen, chronicles the misadventures of a woman who indulges her inner crazy-person.

ABC network president Channing Dungey fielded cancellation questions at the summer press tour. Asked why the network cut Stana Katic from Castle, only to eventually cancel the show, Dungey responded: “That’s a case where you have things running on two parallel tracks. We were always upfront with the studio and producers that we might not be bringing the show back for Season 9. [The studio/producers] did what they had to do [in case there was another season]. Ultimately, we did not feel like it was the right thing to do to order another season.” Regarding Nashville, Dungey noted that she “personally, really loved” the show. “But there were challenges, there were a lot of things to consider….We had a lot of conversations with (the show’s producers) Lionsgate TV and ABC Studios, but at the end of the day, we didn’t feel like this was something we’d be able to work out.” The exec added that she is “thrilled” the series has found a new home on CMT.

ABC is ditching the #TGIT tagline it used to market its Thursday lineup. Dungey explained that since the marketing strategy is associated “in particular” with Scandal, which won’t debut Season 6 until midseason – “it did feel like it would make more sense to wait to bring #TGIT back” when Olivia Pope, Fitz and company return to our screens in January 2017.

Dungey confirmed that the network is having talks with LucasFilm regarding a Star Wars series.  “We will continue to have conversations with them. It would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand to our programming,” she noted.

Gwyneth Paltrow, will.i.am and digital entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk will serve as mentors and advisors to app developers on Planet of the Apps. Paltrow and will.i.am. will also EP the project. “Developing and launching a business based on your own original idea can be exhilarating, but intimidating,” said Paltrow. “This is a great opportunity to be part of a series that lets us use our experiences to help app developers break through and create viable businesses that will impact peoples’ lives.”

Netflix is now a co-producer on ITV and Red Production Company’s conspiracy thriller drama Paranoid. The eight-part drama premieres on ITV and on Netflix later this year.

To celebrate what would have been Lucille Ball‘s 105th birthday on August 6, American Masters Podcast will feature Doris Singleton, Fran Drescher and Carol Burnett discussing the comedy icon’s successes and challenges as one of America’s first women media moguls and television sensations. Hosted by EP Michael Kantor, new episodes of the podcast are available biweekly on the In Their Own Words: The American Masters Digital Archive.
