Joe Biden is heading to NBC procedural Law & Order: SVU. The vice president will play himself in a press conference scene, commending Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) for her work in clearing some of New York’s rape kit backlog. Biden and Hargitay have collaborated on several charitable efforts to benefit women in the past, including a 2014 PSA about domestic violence.

Jimmy Buffet, who recurs on Hawaii Five-0 as helicopter pilot Frank Bama, repeatedly referred to the CBS drama’s upcoming Season 7 as “the last season” during a Friday appearance on NBC’s Today. To squelch cancellation rumors and assure Buffet of his character’s fate, showrunner Peter M. Lenkov took to Twitter posting that “Bama is alive and well… For many many MORE seasons.”

TALK AT TCA

National Geographic Channel and Katie Couric Media, along with National Geographic Studios, have partnered on two-hour documentary, Gender Revolution (wt), an in-depth look at the role of genetics, brain chemistry and modern culture on gender fluidity. The doc will premiere on the National Geographic Channel globally in 171 countries and 45 languages, timed to the January 2017 Gender issue of National Geographic Magazine.

Nat Geo has also closed a drama series script development deal with Amblin Television, Sony Pictures Television and CrichtonSun for a global limited series based on the soon-to-be-published Michael Crichton manuscript, Dragon Teeth. The book was discovered by his wife Sherri Crichton among his archives. Project follows the intense rivalry between real-life paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh during a time of intense fossil speculation and discovery. And Nat Geo has announced production of its first virtual reality short documentary film, The Protectors.  The project will expose the dangerous reality faced by rangers protecting African elephants from ivory poachers. Director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and VR creator Imraan Esmail (The Displaced, Valen’s Reef) will co-create the 12-minute VR film in partnership with Here Be Dragons, a leading innovator in VR spherical filmmaking, and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures.

The network has acquired the worldwide rights the to untitled climate change feature documentary produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Fisher Stevens, Brett Ratner and James Packer. The film explores how society can prevent the demise of endangered species, ecosystems and native communities across the globe. Martin Scorsese is executive producer. Nat Geo shoots for the stars with scripted/unscripted hybrid series Mars, centering on both a real and dramatized quest to colonize the planet. Premiere is set for November, and greenlit eight-episode event global scripted miniseries The Long Road Home, based on the New York Times best-seller from Martha Raddatz and first announced as a development deal in November.

Programming President Casey Bloys began HBO’s presentation by announcing the renewal of Real Time with Bill Maher through 2018, bringing its run to 16 seasons. The show has been posting record ratings this election year, currently averaging 4.4 million viewers.

The exec confirmed that Game of Thrones will end its run after 8 seasons, explaining that the move was the decision of creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. “If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons, but we want to take their lead with what they can do and what the best version of the show is,” said Bloys. As for a possible spinoff, Bloys admitted it has been discussed. “But it has to make sense creatively,” he maintained. “I’m open to it. The guys aren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans.”

Regarding a third installment of True Detective, the show that ended its second season a year ago, Bloys assured that “is not dead.” But don’t hold your breath. “I’m not sure we have the right take for a third season yet,” he added. As for talk of a Deadwood movie from series creator David Milch, Bloys confirmed Milch is writing the script, but no word on a green light.

Jon Stewart’s digital animated series remains on track to launch on HBO before the November Presidential election, with the hope that the show will be up and running by September or October. “It’s an animated parody of a cable news network,” said Bloys. “It’s Onion-like, with video and text.”

Premiere dates for three HBO series were announced. Sci-fi western Westworld bows Sunday, October 2, followed on Sunday, October 9 by comedies Divorce and Insecure. HBO also greenlit a contemporary family drama from Six Feet Under and True Blood producer Alan Ball.

At the top of EPIX’s presentation, co-founder/CEO Mark Greenberg announced a premiere date for spy thriller Berlin Station and comedy Graves: Both will bow on Sunday, October 16.  A series adaptation of the movie Get Shorty is still in pre-production, with Alan Colter (The Sopranos, Damages) tapped to direct the opening episode.
