IN THE NEWS

John Legend, along with Get Lifted partners Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius, are onboard to exec produce WGN America thriller Underground, as well as (of course) oversee the score and soundtrack. The show centers on plantation slaves who band together to fight for their families and their freedom. “This series has a unique opportunity to speak to the passion and courage of those who risked it all as they raced to freedom,” said Legend. Underground, slated for a 2016 premiere, is currently in production in Baton Rouge, LA.

Expect changes on The Daily Show when Trevor Noah takes over the buzzy Comedy Central series from Jon Stewart. “Now you’ve got the Gawkers, the Buzzfeeds. The way people are drawing their news is soundbites and headlines and click-bait links has changed everything,” Noah told reporters at TCA. “The biggest challenge is going to be … how are we going to bring all of that together looking at it from a bigger lens as opposed to just going after one source – which was historically FOX News.” One thing that isn’t changing: executive producers Steve Bodow, Jen Flanz, Tim Greenberg, Jill Katz and Adam Lowitt have all re-signed under the new host. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah debuts Monday, September 28; Stewart’s gives up his hosting post August 6.

Cinemax confirmed that the upcoming fourth season of Banshee, premiering in January 2016, will be its last – and it’s going out with a bang. “Banshee is a unique and compelling show that helped set high standards for original programming for Cinemax,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO programming. “The show’s exceptional blend of action and drama earned a vocal and passionate fan base that will not be disappointed in Banshee’s final season.”

CBS took a pass, but Sneaky Pete, the drama co-created by David Shore (House) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), is getting a second chance on Amazon Instant Video. The pilot is debuting Friday, August 7; viewer feedback will help determine whether it goes to series. Project stars Giovanni Ribisi as a con man who assumes the identity of his former prison cellmate.

Inspired by the NY Times column, Travel Channel’s 36 Hours premieres Monday, August 17 at 8p. Co-hosts Kristen Kish, an acclaimed chef, and Kyle Martino, former professional U.S. soccer player, arrive in a new city each week ready to see the sights.

Verizon joins Cablevision as the second pay-TV operator offering HBO Now without requiring a pay-TV service. HBO’s direct-to-consumer OTT platform is available to Verizon FiOS broadband and Verizon DSL customers for its standard price: $14.99; broadband users can also try out the service for free for 30 days.

As part of its summer sampling campaign, ABC Family is showcasing new original comedy Kevin From Work on Facebook, prior to its on-air premiere. Fans can watch the show at
https://www.facebook.com/KevinFromWorkTV. The series bows on ABC Family Wednesday, August 12 at 8p with two back-to-back episodes.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

There’s a new medium in town. Nineteen-year-old clairvoyant Tyler Henry heads E!’s Hollywood Teen Medium (wt), following Henry as he delivers messages from beyond and adjusts to life as celebrities’ go-to guy. “This series adds a new layer of mystery and intrigue to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood that our audience is so passionate about,” said Jeff Olde, EVP, original programming & development. “Tyler’s innocent charm puts celebrities instantly at ease.”

Syfy and Universal Cable Productions greenlit Blood Drive, a 13-episode edgy series set in a near-apocalyptic future. “This highly stylized roller coaster ride is a throwback to 1970s grindhouse cinema,” said Dave Howe, president, Syfy and Chiller.

Nat Geo Wild ordered Big Game of Thrones, a six-episode wildlife miniseries centering on rival animal tribes battling for supremacy. “We are trying to up the ante even more by following several animal clans for years, giving each character and their stories a unique voice like the most riveting scripted dramas but, of course, this is totally unscripted,” Geoff Daniels, EVP and GM of Nat Geo Wild, told Variety. “So far, the footage is absolutely stunning and has the potential to be a game changer.” Produced by Icon Films, the series is slated to debut in 2016. As for the miniseries’ title, Daniels joked in a statement, “HBO can tell its lawyers to stand down, a new title is forthcoming.”

HBO Documentary Films has picked up the rights to Very Semi-Serious. Leah Wolchok’s documentary about New Yorker cartoonists is slated for broadcast in December, following a limited theatrical run. The doc features interviews with New Yorker staffers including cartoon editor Bob Mankoff and editor David Remnick, and artists Roz Chast and Mort Gerberg, among others.

COMING UP

TV One’s Lexus Verses and Flow premieres tonight at 10p. Actor Laz Alonso (The Mysteries of Laura) hosts the variety show, blending musical performances with spoken word pieces. This season showcases artists including Avery Sunshine, Charlie Wilson, Chrisette Michele, Jazmine Sullivan, Jussie Smolett of FOX’s Empire, Leela James and Melanie Fiona.

AXS TV premieres One Night for One Drop on Wednesday, August 19 at 8p. The event features

100 Cirque De Soleil performers and special guests coming together to raise awareness and funds for global water issues.

In the wake of the tragic death of Zimbabwean lion Cecil, Nat Geo Wild is commemorating World Lion Day on Monday, August 10 with programming reminding viewers of the importance of protecting the big cats. Lion Day content starts with Lion Battle Zone at 12p, and ends with Man v. Lion at 7p.

Back in the 1970s, Sid & Marty Krofft shows were a brand unto themselves: trippy, low-budget wonders like HR Pufnstuf that became cultural touchstones for a generation. Now, the brothers are back with a new show for Nickelodeon. Marty Krofft says that today’s young generation is different – though they still can tell the winners from the losers. Check it out: http://cynopsis.com/cyncity/sid-marty-krofft-mutt-stuff/

RETURNING SERIES

Five eps in, MTV freshman Scream has been picked up for a second season. Based on the fright film franchise, the series bowed to 1.03 million viewers and a .5 in the A18-49 demo.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced its fall premiere sked. Oprah’s Master Class returns for a fifth season Sunday, October 25 at 8p; For Better or Worse kicks off Friday, September 11 with new episodes at 9 and 9:30p; Iyanla: Fix My Life returns Saturday, September 19 at 9p, followed by Oprah: Where Are They Now? at 10p; new episodes of Tyler Perry’s If Loving You Is Wrong debut Tuesday, September 22 at 10p, before moving to regular Tuesday-at-9p time slot September 29; Super Soul Sunday bows Sunday, October 4 at 7p; and new episodes of Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s launch Saturday, November 14 at 9p, followed by Raising Whitley at 10p.

CASTING

Ellen Barkin and Scott Speedman (Felicity) have been tapped to star in Animal Kingdom, a TNT crime family drama pilot from John Wells inspired by the feature film. Barkin will play matriarch Janine "Smurf " Cody; Speedman portrays Barry "Baz" Brown, adopted by the Cody family when he was 12.

Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars) is reprising her role as Claire on USA drama Suits. The character, who first appeared in a season four flashback, returns in the ep airing Wednesday, August 12 at 9p.

Chris Browning (Sons of Anarchy) landed the role of Ben Krull, aka Reactron, on Supergirl. Series premieres Monday, October 26 at 8:30p on CBS.

Saturday Night Live alum Jason Sudeikis will star in FOX’s partially animated comedy pilot Son of Zorn. Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) plays his ex.

Katie Stevens (Faking It) will be the third actress to play Marg Helgenberger‘s daughter on CBS drama CSI. (Her predecessors were Madison McReynolds  and Kay Panabaker). Stevens debuts as Lindsey Willows on the show’s two-hour series finale, set for Sunday, September 27.

At least one set of twins is heading back to Netflix‘s Fuller House. Blake and Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit are returning as Nicky and Alex Katsopolis, Aunt Becky and Uncle Jesse’s Full House sons, according to a post on Blake’s Instagram. The show is set to bow in 2016.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

How much ad revenue is digital siphoning from traditional media? Standard Media Index analyzed the flow of ad dollars from October 2014-June 2015 and estimates digital ad spending was up $3 billion year-over-year (+16 percent), while broadcast dipped $960 million (-8 percent) and cable was down $140 million (-1 percent). With local TV, print and radio collectively down $900 million, organic digital growth amounted to $1 billion. “Everyone knows that digital advertising continues to grow, but now we are better able to not only quantify the growth, but also see where the dollars are coming from," Scott Grunther, SMI’s EVP of media, tells Cynopsis. “In terms of the drivers of digital’s ad growth, the major social networking sites and online video sites are really helping fuel the expansion.”

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

OTT digital video network for international TV shows and movies, DramaFever, has struck a new multi-year licensing deal to bring top Korean series and films to the U.S. and Canada.  DramaFever has also signed on as the exclusive drama category sponsor of CJ E&M’s huge fan convention: KCON USA presented by Toyota, which kicks off this weekend in Los Angeles.

KID STUFF

Get ready to aprender, bailar, and jugar – that’s learn, dance and play – with favorite furry friends on Sesame Amigos. The new 30-minute Spanish-language show produced by Sesame Workshop debuts on Univision Saturday, August 1 at 8:30a.
