IN THE NEWS

Don’t hold your breath for Netflix’s stand-up comedy special starring Bill Cosby. “I don’t think it’s appropriate to release that,” said the streaming service’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, at the TCA summer press tour, referring to the disgraced star’s ongoing sex scandal. But viewers might see Full House twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen on Netflix revival Fuller House. While the actresses are so far not slated to appear, they’re “teetering,” shared Sarandos.

The Westminster Kennel Club’s annual dog show, a USA staple since 1984, is trotting over to Fox Sports. A 10-year agreement starting in 2017 includes global rights, and gives the canine competition a prime time live slot on Fox Sports 1, as well as Nat Geo Wild and Fox Sports digital platforms with additional coverage, and encore airings on NGW.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Larysa Kondracki (The Whistleblower) inked a one-year directing and first-look development deal with Starz that includes directing an episode of Power. Kondracki has directed eps of The Americans, Halt and Catch Fire, The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul.

USA greenlit Brooklyn Animal Control, based on the comic created by JT Petty. A co-production with Universal Cable Productions and IDW Entertainment, the pilot will be written and exec produced by Petty.

Horror net Chiller announced the start of production for its first original series, Slasher. Filmed in Sudbury, Parry Sound and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the psychological thriller starring Katie McGrath (Jurassic World) is slated for a 2016 premiere.

HBO is developing a Western drama set in 1840s Wyoming, reports EW. Untamed is exec produced and directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor); Mark L. Smith (Vacancy) is writer and exec producer. Also in development at HBO: a comedy about a fallen Olympic figure skater from Saturday Night Live writer Paula Pell, written by Pell and Michelle Lawler and exec produced by Sue Naegle.

COMING UP

Ex-Mythbusters Kari Byron and Tory Belleci have jumped to Travel Channel for new series Thrill Factor, where they’ll dive into the engineering and science behind thrill rides. “We are thrilled – no pun intended – that Kari and Tory are joining the Travel Channel family,” said Ross Babbit, SVP, programming and development. “As true adventure seekers, they epitomize what travel is all about, and offer a unique scientific perspective.” Not to mention the fans they collected during their years busting myths on Discovery. Thrill Factor bows Wednesday, August 12 at 8p.

Female masterminds are the focus of Oxygen’s Snapped: She Made Me Do It. True crime series launches with a two-parter beginning Sunday, September 6 at 10p, and moves to its regular time slot Wednesday, September 9 at 10p.

Starz Kids & Family is offering “Amazing Animation” Saturdays next month. Lineup each week features two animated films, starting August 1 at 6p with Planes and Planes: Fire and Rescue.

On-air sports talent for Bounce TV’s upcoming Premier Boxing Champions – The Next Round includes Fred Hickman (CNN Sports Tonight) as host, Frank Charles (NFL GameDay Final) calling blow-by-blow action and Super Welterweight World Champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout serving up insight and analysis. Action starts Sunday, August 2 at 9p.

Fameless launches on truTV tonight at 10:30. Exec produced by David Spade, the sketch/prank show features wannabe stars cast in a reality show.

HGTV renovate-to-rent series Income Property, starring Scott McGillivray, premieres on sister net DIY Thursday, August 6 at 10p, for a run of fresh eps that will last until September 24. And what’s good for HGTV is good for DIY. “Scott is the perfect expert to satisfy the DIY promise to dive deep into the renovation process, so premiering new episodes of his series Income Property is a win for viewers,” Courtney White, VP, program development and production, tells Cynopsis.

Two new series will also launch on DIY this summer: American Rehab: Charleston makes its debut Wednesday, August 19 at 11p, while Attic Gold arrives Sunday, August 30 at 9p.

Ahead of a month-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of Law & Order, WE tv started a two-night marathon last night that continues tonight at 8p, with bonus footage and behind the scenes extras. On Monday, stars Dann Florek, Carolyn McCormick, S. Epatha Merkerson and Jill Hennessy got the party started in NYC. In August, the procedural will air on the net Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 5p-11p.

RETURNING SERIES

TruTV’s The Carbonaro Effect starts its second season tonight at 10p. Posing as a baker, beautician, and other characters, Carbonaro is deft at “making people believe in the unbelievable,” he tells Cynopsis. This year, the magician promises a push to escalate the hidden camera show’s tricks. Any plans for working some magic on TruTV CEO Chris Linn? “I’m not at liberty to say,” Carbonaro jokes.

When Calls the Heart landed a third season on Hallmark Channel. Ten new hours of the romance series, set in an early 20th century mining town, launch Sundays in February, with a two-hour sneak peek of the first two episodes airing over the holiday season.

Hot In Cleveland spin-off The Soul Man will be back on TV Land for a fifth and final season. The comedy is the net’s highest-rated original series among African Americans P25-54 and African American Women 25-54, averaging a2.2 AA P25-54 rating and a 2.65 rating among AA W25-54 over its four seasons. “We plan to give the viewers something very special this year,” said Keith Cox, EVP of development and original programming. TV Land rebranded with edgier fare this year, premiering shows like Younger and Impastor.

CASTING

Drew Powell was bumped from recurring to series regular on season two of Fox’s Gotham, launching Monday, September 21.

Lawrence Kao (The Walking Dead), Rebecca Breeds (Pretty Little Liars) and Oliver Ackland (Satisfaction) will recur on season three of CW’s The Originals, says EW. Supernatural drama returns Thursday, October 8.

Damon Dayoub (NCIS) was upped from recurring guest star to series regular on season two of ABC Family procedural Stitchers, returning in 2016.

Lost alum Terry O’Quinn will co-star in season two of ABC anthology series Secrets and Lies, with Michael Ealy and Juliette Lewis.

ADVERTISING

CBS plans to live-stream national ads in its February 7 broadcast of the 2016 Super Bowl, reports Variety, so sponsors would likely be expected to pony up for both online ratings and TV ratings. In the past, advertisers could opt for one or the other. In February, CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves said the goal for a 30-second Super Bowl spot was “north of $5 million”; this year NBC asked for about $4.5 million.

A new report from AHAA: The Voice of Hispanic Marketing cites a “direct and positive relationship” between allocation shifts from English to Hispanic media. On average, a 5 percent shift in allocation would generate a 1.75 percent acceleration in U.S. revenue growth rate, says the study.

For its first-ever national marketing campaign, regional telecom U.S. Cellular is promoting its nationwide cell and data service with Scripps Networks. A five-part video series hosted by Andrew Zimmern (Travel’s Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern) takes customers to destinations like San Francisco, Maine and Oregon; the travelers use their U.S. Cellular network to share the trip with friends back home. The first episode is live on ULIVE, TravelChannel.com and FoodNetwork.com.

Baby boomer news net Newsmax TV inked a deal with multi-platform ad sales company WorldLink to oversee paid programming and short-form direct response sales, starting August 3. “We think direct response advertisers will embrace Newsmax TV’s differentiated mix of insightful and relevant programming,” said WordLink founder and CEO Toni Knight.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Banijay Group and Zodiak Media confirmed a merger that creates one of the world’s largest independent production and distribution companies, and the biggest not controlled by a media group. With a footprint in more than 18 territories, revenues close in on the $1 billion mark.

The Asia TV Forum & Market returns December 1-4. The Asian entertainment content event will be held at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands.

Chinese TV producer and distributor IPCN struck an option deal with Global Agency to remake weekly music talent show format The Remix in China. It’s familiar territory for IPCN, which has already brokered deals for China’s Got Talent, So You Think You Can Dance and Sing Off.

ITV reported a 5 percent rise in ad revenue for the six months ending June 30, with total revenues up 11 percent versus the same time last year and pre-tax profits up 25 percent, to $608 million. ITV head Adam Crozier said the company, which purchased Talpa Media, Mammoth Screen and Twofour Group this year, will continue to “look for acquisition opportunities in line with our strategy,” as well as funnel “a lot more money” into drama.

BBC Three’s Thirteen starts shooting this week in Bristol, with Jodie Comer (My Mad Fat Diary) in the lead role. Psychological drama focuses on a woman who starts a new life after escaping from the cellar prison where she’s been held for 13 years.
