IN THE NEWS

Roger That: Roger Ailes, chairman and CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, and Chairman of Fox Television Stations, has resigned from his role effective immediately amid a sexual harassment scandal. Parent company 21st Century Fox announced the news yesterday, and said Rupert Murdoch will assume the role of chairman and acting CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. Ailes’ resignation comes two weeks after 21st Century Fox launched an investigation of Ailes after former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against him claiming she was let go for rebuffing his unwanted sexual advances. “Roger Ailes has made a remarkable contribution to our company and our country. Roger shared my vision of a great and independent television organization and executed it brilliantly over 20 great years,” Rupert Murdoch said in a statement yesterday. “His grasp of policy and his ability to make profoundly important issues accessible to a broader audience stand in stark contrast to the self-serving elitism that characterizes far too much of the media.

Sons Lachlan Murdoch and James Murdoch, 21st Century Fox’s respective executive chairman and CEO, issued a joint statement: “We join our father in recognizing Roger’s remarkable contributions to our company. Our talented Fox News and Fox Business colleagues, up and down the organization and on both sides of the camera, have built something that continues to redefine the cable news experience for millions of viewers. We are enormously proud of their accomplishments. For them, as well as for our colleagues across our entire organization, we continue our commitment to maintaining a work environment based on trust and respect. We take seriously our responsibility to uphold these traditional, long-standing values of our company.”

PBS once again scored the most nominations for News and Documentary Emmy Awards, with 54 total nods. Its Frontline landed 18 nominations, and Independent Lens and Nature nabbed eight apiece. With 37 in total, CBS took more than double the nominations to its nearest rival propelled by 60 Minutes, which bested all other programs with 26 noms. In cable, HBO came out on top with 19 noms, all going to HBO Documentary Films. Now-defunct Al Jazeera America came in second for cable with 10 noms. Statuettes will be handed out September 21 at a ceremony at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P Rose Hall in Manhattan.

Actor Peter Scolari is in as the new nominee for the Emmy Awards’ guest actor in a comedy series category. Scolari, who plays Lena Dunham’s father on HBO’s Girls, replaces Peter MacNicol, who originally was nominated for his role on HBO’s Veep but was disqualified Wednesday when the TV Academy learned he had appeared in more than 50 percent of the show’s eps, making him ineligible as a guest actor.

How do you cap off War and Peace? The Weinstein Co. and the BBC are back together again for a TV adaptation of Victor Hugo classic Les Miserables. The six-part miniseries will be written by Andrew Davies, who also adapted the Tolstoy epic for Weinstein and the BBC. “Les Miserables is one of the greatest novels of all time  and while the musical is one of my favorites this will be completely different,” said Harvey Weinstein. “An intense and serious drama that will find contemporary relevance to what’s going on in the world today.” Miniseries is a BBC Studios and Lookout Point co-production for BBC One in association with Weinstein Television.

Bravo Media doled out awards Wednesday night to winners of its inaugural event The Bravos. Hosted by Andy Cohen, the awards  which featured a performance by Erika Jayne and Mariah Carey’s acceptance of the Giving Me Life Achievement Award  included: most socially driven: Kandi Burruss; cutest couple: Tom Sandavol & Ariana Madix; and Bravo Award for Jumpsuit Achievement: Khloe Kardashian.
