Good morning. It’s Friday July 15, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

A big day for Pac-12 Networks, which announced an agreement with Twitter to serve as its premier streaming partner for Pac-12 Plus, a broadband network of live events produced by the conference’s 12 universities. At least 150 games will be carried over the 2016-2017 academic year on the platform, featuring Olympic sports that include soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, baseball, ice hockey, swimming & diving, softball, track & field, wrestling, lacrosse, tennis, and water polo. Events will also still be streamed on university official athletic sites and Pac-12.com. “The Pac-12 Networks’ collaboration with Twitter reflects our ongoing commitment to increasing exposure for Pac-12 universities and their live, school-produced events,” said Pac-12 Networks President Lydia Murphy-Stephans. “By expanding our digital footprint, Pac-12 Plus also allows us to connect more fans with more, live Pac-12 sports content through a platform they use every day.”

In addition, Pac-12 Networks lined up Cox Communications to add Pac-12 Network to its Essential tier in Arizona and designated home markets in California by Aug. 2. Frontier Communications will also launch Pac-12 Network in HD to its subscribers in Southern California in time for the 2016 football season running on Frontier’s Preferred tier in LA and on its Extreme tier in Palm Springs.

ON THE AIR

MLB’s All-Star Game delivered a 5.4 rating on FOX, down from last year’s 6.6 in Nielsen ratings, according to the AP. The game marks a record-low for the event, which also generated a 10 share with 8.7 million viewers. Still, the telecast marks the highest-rated program of the summer season.

Maybe New Year’s Eve isn’t such a great idea after all… College Football Playoff’s Bill Hancock said the organization is mulling a shift of the playoff semifinals away from Dec. 31, noting that the change couldn’t happen before the 2018 season. Last season’s ratings saw the semifinals drop 40% from the year before. This season’s semifinals at the Peach and Fiesta bowls will take place on New Year’s Eve, with the Rose and Sugar Bowls on New Year’s Day and the title game set for Jan. 9 in Tampa.

Erin Andrews locked in a new multi-year deal with FOX Sports, according to SI.com, and will now focus exclusively on the NFL, as part of the Joe Buck/Troy Aikman team. She will no longer work the company’s MLB coverage.

Elsewhere at FOX, the company will see current welterweight champion Danny Garcia join the PBC on FOX broadcast team as an analyst for Saturday’s event at 8p on the broadcast channel. Garcia teams with blow-by-blow announcer Brian Kenny and analyst Virgil Hunter. Kristine Leahy joins the team as reporter.

ESPN Events unveiled brackets for its owned and operated early season college basketball tournaments. The lineup will showcase more than 40 teams, with tournaments launching in Nov. and running through Christmas weekend. The six events include the Gildan Charleston Classic (Nov. 17, 18 & 20), Puerto Rico Tip-off (Nov. 17, 18 & 20), AdvoCare Invitational (Nov. 24, 25 & 27), DIRECTV Wooden Legacy (Nov. 24, 25 & 27), NIT Season Tip-Off (Nov. 24-25) and Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic (Dec. 22, 23 & 25).

ESPN and The Basketball Tournament presented by Jack Link’s Protein Snacks locked in broadcast teams for the quarterfinals, semifinals and final of the event. Doug Sherman will oversee play-by-play for all of the TBT contests, with Dan Dakich serve as the analyst for the 7p and 9p games on July 21 and the 2p games on July 23. Fran Fraschilla will be analyst for the 7p and 9p games on July 22, as well as the 6p and 8p games on July 23 as well as the semifinals (July 30) and championship (Aug. 2).

NBC News will launch coverage of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad from Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 1 with Matt Lauer reporting live for TODAY. Lester Holt will then begin anchoring NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt starting Aug. 4 with the series reporting “on the most important issues of the 2016 Olympic Games, featuring unparalleled behind-the-scenes access and interviews with the athletes making headlines in Rio” and featuring correspondents that include Peter Alexander, Miguel Almaguer, Stephanie Gosk, Ron Mott and Chris Jansing.

NBC Sports presents the first-ever Nitro World Games on Saturday at 8p on the broadcast network. More than 100 athletes will compete with Todd Richards anchoring coverage in Salt Lake City, Utah. Richards will be joined by Tony Hawk and Travis Pastrana.

Bellator MMA announced a one-year broadcast partnership with Japan’s AbemaTV, marking the first carriage deal for the promotion in Japan. “We received great results from our initial event on the AbemaTV platform, and we couldn’t be happier to be extending our deal with them,” said Bellator President Scott Coker. “Having spent several years heading the Japanese K1 brand, I developed a great deal of love and respect for Japanese MMA and the country in general. It’s an honor to be able to air our Bellator fights for the incredible MMA fans of ‘The Land of the Rising Sun.’

On the local front, SNY announced that – through the first 88 games of the 2016 season – Mets on SNY is seeing its strongest season since 2010. Season-to-date, SNY is averaging a 2.91 household rating  and a 30% rise over 2015 as well as 278,078 total viewers during its Mets broadcasts.

SportsNet LA reports that its first half of the 2016 MLB season averaged a 1.21 rating and 91,381 average viewers through the Dodgers first 91 games for a spike of 51% and a 56% respectively over 2015 numbers.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

NBC Sports Group detailed its plans with SB Nation for its inaugural coverage of The Open. The strategic digital content partnership is designed to expand SB Nation’s golf programming and Golf Channel’s digital reach with SB Nation beefing up its golf coverage and offering new original digital golf video content, covering major tournaments, key players, and important moments. “Golf Channel’s partnership with SB Nation offers the opportunity to expand golf’s reach more effectively to a younger, more digitally engaged audience, which is increasingly one of the most sought-after and highly valued demographics,” said Jon Kropp, vice president for Golf Channel Digital Media. “This partnership will shine a spotlight on golf’s current and up-and-coming superstars, delivering high-quality content that is accessible and showcases the game we all love.”

The WWE Draft on July 19’s SmackDown Live Tuesday night premiere on USA Network will see WWE offer fans a special WWE Draft Center Live second screen experience on WWE Network. In addition to pre- and post-show, the supplemental program will “allow the WWE Universe to get inside the Draft in a way unlike any other as the lives of Superstars change forever.”

The Topps Company is joining WWE to launch Topps WWE SLAM. The product marks WWE’s first digital trading card app, offering exclusive digital cards that can be collected and traded with fans worldwide. “WWE has been an incredible partner with Topps for many years, and we are thrilled to be able to offer WWE fans worldwide a new way to collect their favorite WWE Superstars from today and the past,” said Jeremy Strauser, Vice President and General Manager of Topps Digital. “WWE has been at the forefront of pop culture and entertainment for many years and we are excited to add WWE SLAM to the Topps apps portfolio.”

Campus Insiders lined up plans to stream seven football games for the Patriot League Network this season, offering home games for each of the seven teams in the upcoming season. Each of the games streamed by Campus Insiders will be a Patriot League contest, including Fordham/Holy Cross at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 12 at 3p. The PLN will continue to provide on-demand video content, as well as live-stream events and numerous interviews, feature stories and highlight packages throughout the year.

Valve is pulling back from the gaming world’s gambling infrastructure, and will “crack down” on websites that use Steam to facilitate gambling, according to Bloomberg, noting that using its trading its software in that way violates its terms and services. “Since (launch) a number of gabling sites started a number of gabling sites leveraging the Steam trading system, and there’s been some false assumptions about our involvement with these sites,” the company posted. “We’d like to clarify that we have no business relationships with any of these sites. We have never received any revenue from them And Steam does not have a system for turning in-game idems into real world currency.”

ESL One Cologne 2016 saw the world’s largest Counter-Strike: Global Offensive event in title history, as over 14,000 people attended the company’s tournament on each of the main event days. Meanwhile, viewers on online platforms, including Twitch, Azubu, Hitbox and Yahoo!, consumed a total of 31 million hours of content from the event, spending an average of 155% more time in each of the 68.6 million sessions.

Square Enix announced that it will tackle San Diego Comic-Con 2016 with the Square Enix Experience, a themed outdoor area that includes Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – The Icarus Dash, Final Fantasy XV  -The Royal Race and a Rise of the Tomb Raider Glacier Climb. The company will also offer the Square Enix Arcade hosting kiosks featuring Square Enix’s premier games and Turtle Beach’s Ear Force PX24 gaming headsets located at 7th Avenue and Market Street. Panels will include “20 Years of Tomb Raider: Lara Croft’s Multimedia Empire” and “Kingsglave: Final Fantasy XV.”
