For the fifth year, broadcast nets didn’t make the cut for best drama, though NBC did land 41 nominations, followed by 35 each for ABC and CBS. HBO’s total: 94. Why is broadcast being shut out? Cynopsis asked the experts at branding and insight’s fim TruthCo. Here’s their take: “Overall, this shows a growing schism between traditional metrics of viewership and the cultural definition of ‘quality.’ While traditional ratings models still favor dramatic plots like melodramas and standard procedurals, awards shows tend to reward experimentation and risk-taking, which are much more feasible for networks operating outside the traditional system. While broadcast networks (particularly ABC) still see some recognition in comedy categories, the drama nominations feel like a critical referendum against the traditional broadcast drama model – especially the procedural and the 22+-episode season. It’s worth noting that the one broadcast drama that was consistently recognized is American Crime, which was entered in the Limited Series category, suggesting that broadcast networks might benefit by experimenting with form and storytelling scope.”
What was the most shocking omission from the Emmy nomination list? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/
Jose Diaz-Balart joins Saturday’s NBC Nightly News as full-time anchor starting August 6. Diaz-Balart, who will continue anchoring Telemundo’s Noticiero Telemundo and Enfoque con Jose Diaz-Balart, had been rotating in the position since November. “This is a significant moment for the broadcast and a true testament to Jose’s many talents,” said Janelle Rodriguez, SVP editorial, NBC News. “He will now hold the historic distinction of occupying preeminent anchor positions on two major broadcast networks in two languages.”
Rules governing retransmission disputes will not be revised, said FCC chairman Tom Wheeler in a blog post, despite complaints by cable and satellite companies about negotiating practices. “Based on the staff’s careful review of the record, it is clear that more rules in this area are not what we need at this point. It is hard to get more inclusive than to review the ‘totality of circumstances,’” said Wheeler.“To start picking and choosing, in part, could limit future inquiries.” That said, added Wheeler, “This does not mean the FCC will turn a blind eye to disputes.Nor does it mean that Congress couldn’t expand the scope of the Commission’s authority in this space….I am prepared to use the authority Congress has conferred on the Commission to help to bring negotiations to a conclusion.” Point: broadcasters.
It appears Comcast is getting closer to reported mobile service trials, with an executive shuffle that includes the promotion of Greg Butz from EVP, sales and marketing to head of a new Comcast Mobile division. Last year, Comcast notified Verizon Wireless of its intention to invoke its Mobile Virtual Network Operator Rights.
Azteca America is continuing its partnership with multicultural event marketing agency and tour producer, Cardenas Marketing Network, and will serve as the presenting sponsor and official television station for a series of six concerts in 2016 featuring Mexican artist Julion Alvarez. Of course, it’s not just about making music. “The concert series provides a unique opportunity to stage major events and create customized marketing solutions on an extremely local level for our valued partners,” said Enrique Perez, EVP, Station Group, Azteca America.
