CYNOPSISDIGITAL
07.14.16

Good morning. It’s Thursday July 14, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Haptics: Haptics, or touch feedback, refers to technology that recreates a sense of touch. Haptic devices might apply forces, vibrations, or motions to a user. A vibrating video game controller is a good example. Virtual reality, meanwhile, still mostly uses sight and sound. But some companies are developing haptic gloves – and even full-body haptic suits – to complement the VR experience.

TOP NEWS

ABC is upping its VOD game. The network is re-launching its video-streaming service. Free and ad-supported, the service will feature a collection of original short-form series, which will launch under the “ABCd” (i.e., ABC digital) banner. The new shows will feature talent such as Modern Family’s Ty Burrell and comedian Iliza Shlesinger. (ABC says it also has over 40 more series in development, which will be rolled out monthly.) The service will also include full seasons of 38 classic series from ABC’s library, including Felicity, Ugly Betty, and School House Rock.

Apple’s first-ever original series, an unscripted show about app developers created in partnership with musician will.i.am, was first announced back in March. Now we’ve finally got some more details. The series, called Planet of the Apps, will follow developers as they seek VC funding and advice from tech experts. (The developers will also receive promotion in the Apple App Store.) The show, which will be shot in L.A. beginning this October, will feature 100 participants in its first season; open casting calls have been posted.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

According to data from Digi-Capital, investments in virtual and augmented reality companies have totaled $2 billion over the 12-month period ending on June 30. The biggest chunk of that money went to augmented reality headset hardware – in large part because the AR company Magic Leap raised a whopping $793.5 million in February. (Alibaba led the round.) Investments in video took the second most cash, followed by investments in virtual reality headset hardware. Notably, during the same time period, companies also spent $849 million in mergers and acquisitions in the VR/AR space. Digi-Capital projects that merger-and-acquisition activity could stretch to a $1 billion run rate by the end of 2016.

So, we know that money is being poured into VR and AR – but how can programmers and media companies generate ROI? That’s the question. And during the July 21 Cynopsis webinar How to Monetize Virtual and Augmented Reality, you’ll get answers from National Geographic, The Weather Channel, IBB Consulting Group, and Virtually Live. Plus, one registrant will win a FREE Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset! Register here.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

BitTorrent News, the upcoming live-streaming news service from the media platform BitTorrent, has an official release date. The service will launch Monday, July 18 during Day One of the Republican National Convention. (Coverage of both parties’ conventions will include commentary, speeches, and other live material.) As previously announced, former CNN producer Harrison Bohrman will serve as news director.  Post-conventions, BitTorrent News aims to cover not only politics, but other areas (including sports) as well. BitTorrent News will be available on the BitTorrent Live app, which can be found on the Apple TV and OS X. It will likely roll out on other platforms soon.

CYNOPSIS KIDS !MAGINATION AWARDS

Cynopsis is set to host the 5th Annual Kids !magination Awards. Help us celebrate the year’s best in content creation – and the campaigns that promote it – during an awards breakfast on September 27 in NYC. Hope to see you there!

PLATFORMS + DEVICES

Starz’ online video service is now available on Roku devices, including the Roku Streaming Stick, the Roku TV, and the Roku Box.  The service is available a la carte, as well as to pay-TV subscribers who pay for Starz.

Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has revived Zoetrope.com. The site was initially launched in 1997 to supply material for Zoetrope: All Story, a short story periodical. In its new iteration, Zoetrope will specialize in writing workshops and in the crowdsourcing of content such as songwriting, scripts, and photography. In addition, the site has a new section dedicated to short films. The section is meant to let directors, screenwriters, and filmmakers see feedback from the Zoetrope community. To that end, the site mandates that, for every story a member submits, that member must review five other works.

RESEARCH

Google thinks musicians and record companies doth protest too much. The tech giant says that the music industry, which has complained often and loudly about piracy on YouTube, is actually making a boatload of cash off of pirated content. According to a new report from Google, of the more than $3 billion that YouTube has paid record companies to date, over $2 billion came from unauthorized user-uploaded content. Here’s how this works: Using YouTube’s Content ID system, copyright-holders can track down much of the pirated content on YouTube. But oftentimes, record companies simply choose to run ads over that content instead of having it taken down. “Content ID goes beyond a simple ‘notice-and-takedown’ system to provide a set of automated tools that empowers rightsholders to automatically claim their content and choose whether to track, block or monetize it on YouTube,” wrote Google’s Katie Oyama in a blog post. Google’s new report, which touts the effectiveness of its Content ID system, is something of a defensive move; just last month, a slew of powerful artists, including Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney, signed on to a new effort to reform the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, arguing that the federal law places too much burden on copyright owners to police piracy of their own work.

@TheChainsmokers: Wow Serena Williams! We aren’t worthy! #legend
Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming for the 7-day period through July 11 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Trends and insights from the 2,726,781 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:

– ESPN ruled in beauty, with 16.3% of the 34,606 “beautiful” ERs across all networks with a big boost from Wimbledon.

– Outside of sports programming, Netflix was the home of tears, with 18.6% of the 9,358 “cried” ERs across networks, thanks mostly to Orange Is The New Black.

– Also outside of sports, STARZ led in awe, with 5.3% of the 15,073 “brilliant” ERs across networks, prompted primarily by Outlander.

– Meanwhile, CBS scored 8.3% of the 19,961 “annoying” ERs across all networks, thanks in large part to the annoying-by-design cast members on Big Brother.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Time Inc. is undertaking a major executive restructuring. The company will centralize its ad sales operation under Mark Ford, Time Inc.’s Chief Revenue Officer for Global Advertising. The new structure will be configured under three areas: category sales, brand sales, and digital. In addition, Time Inc.’s Rich Battista will take over as Executive VP and President of Brands. He’ll oversee Time Inc.’s U.S. media properties, with a specific eye toward increasing the company’s digital revenue. (With Battista’s promotion, Time Inc. EVP Evelyn Webster, who oversees the company’s U.S. brands, will leave the company in August.) Some other moves: Fortune editor Alan Murray will become Time Inc.’s Chief Content Officer, succeeding Norman Pearlstine. And Jen Wong, President of Time Inc. Digital, will now oversee The Foundry, Time Inc.’s content-marketing studio.

TRIVIA

Who wrote and performed the theme song for Netflix’s Orange is the New Black? (Email trivia@cynopsis.com with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.)

Our Last Trivia Question: Facebook bought the virtual reality company Oculus in 2014. How much did Facebook pay for the acquisition? Answer: $2 billion. Kudos to David Westberg- SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union/CA, and Andy Pittman-TAMU/TX

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT

The full scope of VR’s utility is still in the process of revealing itself. We already know that athletes, physicians, and other professionals are making use of the technology. And if the aviation companies Elbit and ATR have their way, pilots will soon be able to use virtual reality headsets to help them land planes in bad weather. How is that possible? Courtesy of the Wall Street Journal’s YouTube page, learn more here.

See you on tomorrow,
David Teich
