Virtual reality sickness: VR sickness, a feeling similar to motion sickness, is primarily caused by a disconnect between what a user’s eyes are seeing and what the user’s vestibular system – the parts of the inner ear and brain that help control balance and eye movements – is sensing. Some VR users are more susceptible to VR sickness than others.

TOP NEWS

Twitter keeps diving deeper into live programming. The company has inked a deal with Bloomberg Media to stream the shows Bloomberg West, What’d You Miss?, and With All Due Respect, as well as Bloomberg’s markets coverage. The companies will split the ad revenue. The deal comes a day after Twitter teamed with CBS News in a deal to offer live coverage of the Republican and Democratic conventions, and two days after a Re/code story reporting that Twitter is looking to team with several major sports leagues on live-streamed content. Back in April, the company reached a pact with the NFL to live-stream Thursday Night Football games.

NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympic Games is getting the digital treatment. For the first time, Olympics viewers will be able to watch live coverage via connected TV devices such as the Apple TV and Google Chromecast. Alas, cord-cutters are out of luck: The coverage will be available only to pay-TV customers. And that fact should surprise no one, given that NBCUniversal is owned by Comcast.

Vine, Twitter’s service for short-form video, has been struggling in 2016. First came reports that its top influencers were jumping ship. Partly as a result of its struggles, Vine has instituted some changes this year, such as hiring former music exec Hannah Donovan as General Manager, and upping the service’s max video length. It turns out some more hirings will be in order: Re/code reports that, since Donovan started work in May, a slew of Vine execs have left the company, including Vine’s Head of Engineering, its Head of Business Development and Operations, its Head of User Experience, its Editorial Lead, and its three Product Managers. “Vine is an important part of our strategy, particularly given its vibrant community of creators, and we’re excited about what the future holds with new leadership,” Twitter told Re/code in a statement.

AD TECH

The ad tech company Cadent has partnered with TiVo Research to create a new addressable TV platform. The platform uses set-top box data from TiVo Research’s sample of 2.3 million homes, as well as data from six other TV providers. The platform delivers high-indexed audiences to about 80 million U.S. households. Cadent’s pay-TV technology is currently used by several cable providers, including Comcast, Charter, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Liberty Global and Rogers Communications. Group M’s Modi Media will be the first client to make use of the new addressable TV platform.

The managed-services programmatic media firm Goodway Group recently announced that it has launched a new anti-fraud initiative. The move comes after Goodway Group undertook a review of its user anomalies and invalid traffic, leading it to remove 13 supply vendors from its ecosystem; Integral Ad Science, a specialist in fraud analysis, then certified that Goodway Group’s campaigns had fraud levels of less than 1% – much lower than he 8.3% industry standard. “Every dollar spent on fraud is not only wasted but supports the bad guys’ efforts in further defeating marketers,” Goodway Group COO Jay Friedman told Cynopsis Digital. “Every dollar Goodway Group saves marketers by preventing fraud works twice. VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

Facebook’s Oculus announced that all pre-orders of the Rift VR headset have finally been shipped, and that new orders are now being processed and shipped from the Oculus website within two to four days. The headset debuted back in March, but demand initially led to shipping delays as long as three months.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

BuzzFeed Motion Pictures, BuzzFeed’s video division, has so far specialized in short-form video. Now that’s changing: According to The Hollywood Reporter, BuzzFeed is partnering with Warner Bros. on Brother Orange, a new feature film. The film will be an adaptation of a real-life incident in which BuzzFeed editor Matt Stopera tracked his stolen iPhone to an unknown man in China. (Stopera’s stories on the subject went viral, especially in China.) Flagship Entertainment, a joint venture between Warner Bros. and CMC Holdings that was founded in order to target the Chinese market, will help develop the film.

MOBILE APPS

Looks like the NFL aims to launch a Snapchat Discover channel. The league posted a job ad on LinkedIn seeking a Managing Editor for such a channel. While sports content has run on Snapchat’s Live Stories section in the past, this would mark the first time that a major sports league has had its own spot on Discover, Snapchat’s platform for publisher-controlled channels.

RESEARCH

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia(used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

You probably think of Lebron James, this year’s NBA Finals MVP, as a legendary basketball player. True – but he’s also the founder of a multi-platform sports media company. And that company, Uninterrupted, is getting a new Executive Producer. The role will go to filmmaker and producer Gotham Chopra, who previously produced sports documentaries such as Showtime’s Kobe Bryant’s Muse and The Little Master, part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 series. (He’s also Deepak Chopra’s son, but that’s neither here nor there.) At Uninterrupted, Chopra will take the lead on developing original programming.
