IN THE NEWS

What does it take to get David Letterman out of retirement? Dropping in during a Steve Martin and Martin Short appearance in San Antonio on Friday, Letterman said, “I was satisfied, I was content. And then a couple of days ago Donald Trump said he was running for president. I have made the biggest mistake of my life.” Included on his top ten list of “interesting facts about Trump” was number six: “Donald Trump walked away from a moderately successful television show for some delusional bull…oh wait, that’s me.”

Add Luchador and TNA X-Division Champion Tigre Uno, who calls Tijuana, Mexico, home, to the list of people outraged by Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant comments about Mexicans. Uno, in a series of posts Wednesday, tweeted (translation): “I’ll fix this myself. @realDonaldTrump if you are man enough to face me I am @IMPACTWRESTLING #TigreVsTrump.” Uno plans to address his fans and Trump on Destination America’s Impact Wrestling Wednesday, July 22 at 9p.

Who would you rather see face off against Donald Trump: David Letterman or Tigre Uno? Let us know in the new Cynopsis.com poll.

Maria Menounos will fill the E! News host slot left open by the imminent departure of Giuliana Rancic, announced Wednesday. Rancic has been with the show for 10 years.

IFC’s Comedy Bang Bang has gotten the seal of approval from magazine High Times, as noted in messaging promoting the show on billboards, on-air and on IFC.com. Explained Blake Callaway, IFC’s EVP of marketing and digital media, “We’ve always suspected that Comedy Bang! Bang! is best enjoyed with herbal treats so teaming with High Times to support the show made perfect sense for our likeminded audiences.”

Stepping in for John Stamos, So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley joins Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black) to present the nominations for the 67th Emmy Awards on Thursday, July 16 at 11:30a. Stamos recently checked himself into a rehab facility for substance abuse.

Patti Stanger is breaking up with Bravo. “After 8 seasons I’ve decided to leave @Bravotv,” tweeted the Millionaire Matchmaker star on Friday. “Stay tuned for exciting news as I move to a wonderful new network!” The split appears to be amicable. “We loved watching Patti Stanger find love for so many people,” said the net. “We wish her the best with her new endeavors.”

The BBC and PBS’s Sherlock Christmas special will have a limited release in theaters, announced exec producer Steven Moffatt at Comic-Con. Moffatt said he hasn’t begun writing season four yet.

MTV renewed Teen Wolf for season six, announced series creator Jeff Davis at Comic-Con. “As long as you keep watching, we’ll probably get to keep making it,” Davis told fans, saying multiplatform viewership of the drama has reached 8 million.

Also at Comic-Con: Arrow fans got the first look at the new version of the Arrow suit, debuting with the premiere of season four on Wednesday, October 7 at 8p on the CW. Take a peek at Cynopsis.com.

Like a Rock: HBO handed Ballers a season two renewal. First ep of the Dwayne Johnson comedy grabbed 8.9 million viewers across platforms, HBO’s most-watched premiere of a half hour series since 2009.

WGN’s Salem was renewed for a third season, it was announced at Comic-Con. Season two of the supernatural thriller from Fox 21 Television Studios averaged over 1.1 million total viewers and 545,000 A18-49 on a Live+7 basis.

Diana Gabaldon, who wrote the books on which Starz drama Outlander is based, will pen an episode for season two. Action moves from Scotland to France for the new run, bowing in 2016.

COMING UP

A special 90-minute Scorpion will follow the 8:30p series premiere of Supergirl on Monday, October 26. The superhero drama gets a kick start from an 8p Big Bang Theory lead-in, moving to its regular 8p slot Monday, November 2.

AMC spin-off Fear of the Walking Dead will premiere with a 90-minute episode on Sunday, August 23 at 9p, simulcast on AMC Global channels. “Whether you’re in Hong Kong, Madrid or Sao Paulo, AMC viewers will be able to join the journey and experience the start of the zombie apocalypse together,” said Bruce Tuchman, president of AMC and Sundance Channel Global. From the trailer shown at Comic-Con on Friday: “When civilization ends, it ends fast.”

Starz’ Ash vs Evil Dead launches, fittingly, on Halloween, Saturday, October 31 at 9p. Half-hour series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell, the original filmmakers of the franchise about a chainsaw-handed monster hunter; Craig DiGregorio serves as exec producer and showrunner.

President Obama will become the first sitting president to visit a federal penitentiary when he goes to the El Reno Federal Correction Institution in Oklahoma next week. The drop-in is part of a Vice special that will air on HBO this fall focused on the country’s criminal justice system (spoiler alert: it’s not pretty).

Six-episode Flip or Flop Follow-Up follows Tarek and Christina El Moussa as the couple reveals what happened behind the scenes during their house-flipping adventures. Series launches Tuesday, July 14, at 9p.

Alternative Press Magazine’s annual awards show returns to AXS TV Wednesday, July 22 at 7p. Fifteen awards will be presented, along with performances from artists including Weezer, Sum 41, Simple Plan, and Taking Back Sunday, among others.

ABC’s Agent Carter is headed to Hollywood for season two. “We like the idea of old Hollywood, its grit and grime,” said exec producer Michele Fazekas at Comic-Con. Season two picks up six months after the drama’s freshman finale.

MTV’s The Shannara Chronicles will premiere in January 2016, it was revealed at Comic-Con. Cast member John Rhys-Daivies, for one, is optimistic about the fantasy series’ prospects. “If this show doesn’t succeed, I don’t know what will,” said Rhys-Davies during the show’s panel. “It is magnificent.”

On July 16, Emmy season kicks off for real as the nominations for TV’s biggest event are announced. But who’ll make the cut? Titan Amazing Race? Outsider Dance Moms? Beloved Carson Daly? Get the whole scoop in the new Cynsiders, where we poll three TV experts and sort through the names, the categories and the politics to predict who’ll be the survivors. http://cynopsis.com/cyncity/reality-shows-hosts-emmy-nominations.

CASTING

Neal McDonough (Agent Carter) joins the CW’s Arrow for season four as a season regular. He’ll play villain Damien Darkh. Crime-fighting drama returns Wednesday, October 7 at 8p.

Comic Con attendees were the first to learn, from exec producer Carlton Cuse, about four guest stars set for USA’s upcoming Colony. Carl Weathers, Kathy Baker (Picket Fences), Kathleen Rose Perkins (Episodes) and Paul Guilfoyle (CSI) are all onboard the dystopian drama, landing in October.

Barbara Sukowa and Todd Stashwick were upped to series regulars for Syfy’s 12 Monkeys, starting production on season two tomorrow in Toronto.

Fancy footwork: Jeanine Mason (Bunheads) is joining the cast of ABC midseason drama Of Kings and Prophets. Mason won season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance.

Riley Smith has been bumped from recurring to series regular in season two of CBS’s Scorpion. Smith plays the son of Katharine McPhee’s character.

Teddy Sears (Masters of Sex) and Shantel VanSanten (The Messengers) are headed for Central City, in the CW’s The Flash. Sophomore run launches Tuesday, October 6 at 8p.

Peter Facinelli (American Odyssey) will recur as a tech billionaire on Supergirl, it was revealed at Comic-Con.

Scottish actress Amy Mason will play Scottish princess Merida on season five of ABC’s Once Upon a Time. Fantasy drama premieres Sunday, September 27 at 8p.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Alive and kicking: Fox reaped about $40 million from ad sales for the Women’s World Cup, according to AdWeek, double initial revenue estimates and five times more than ESPN got for its coverage of the tournament in 2011. Over $12 million came from the Women’s Final game alone.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Splash Entertainment signed a deal with Dish that makes a number of its animated series, including Chloe’s Closet, Mix Master: King of Cards, Dive Olly Dive, The DaVincibles and ToddWorld, available on Dish’s VOD library and Dish Anywhere.
