Former MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry has joined BET News as special correspondent. Harris-Perry, who left MSNBC in February after denouncing preemptions of her show for election coverage, will develop longform news specials and contribute to BET News programs, including co-anchoring election coverage for the national conventions with BET News’ Marc Lamont Hill.

Fox launched a live stream of its primetime entertainment programming last night, with plans to simulcast programming seven nights a week as well as Saturdays during late night. The stream, available to pay-TV customers in all 210 television markets, enables Fox affiliates to dynamically insert local market advertising and station branding. “From the start of the on-demand and over-the-top viewing revolution, Fox has been at the forefront of providing greater access to our buzz-defining shows,” said Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group.

Altice USA is diving into the Summer Olympics. The company’s newly acquired Suddenlink and Cablevision subscribers will have access to NBCUniversal’s 6755 hours of Rio Games programming, on NBCUni channels as well as TV Everywhere live and on demand. “The 2016 Rio Summer Olympics will be the biggest Games ever in one of the most spectacular cities, and we are excited to deliver … NBCUniversal’s unparalleled multiplatform coverage,” said Michael Schreiber, Altice USA EVP and chief content officer.

Showtime Networks and Amblin Partners struck an exclusive agreement under which Amblin Entertainment, Dreamworks Pictures and Participant Media films released theatrically through December 2021 will air on Showtime, The Movie Channel and Flix, as well as Showtime multiplex channels and streaming services. Upcoming theatrical releases include The Light Between Oceans, The Girl on the Train and Ghost in the Shell.

Submissions for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, for performances in film, TV and new media programs, are now open online. Separate film and television committees will choose the nominees.

Let the games begin: Paramount Television and Anonymous Content have optioned the rights to video game Battlefield, from DICE. Michael Sugar and Ashley Zalta from Anonymous will exec produce. “Paramount TV actively seeks smart content from all sectors that will resonate with audiences and translate to compelling programming,” said Amy Powell, president, Paramount TV. “Battlefield has an incredibly dynamic narrative, coupled with a loyal fan base.”

Production company Derby signed live action directing, shooting and editing team Michael Bozzo and Justine Warwick. “The Bozzwicks” have created branded content, documentaries and commercial work for brands, networks and agencies.

PBS doc Spillover – Zika, Ebola & Beyond, tracing the spread of viruses, premieres Wednesday, August 3 at 10p. Graphics along with personal stories provide scientific context for devastating outbreaks.

In addition to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show airing two weeks of special convention coverage from July 19-22 and July 26-29 at 11p, two clip-based specials looking back at the primary season will run on the Monday of each convention week. RNC edition The Daily Show With Trevor Noah: The Road To ‘The Road,’ debuts July 18; DNC special The Daily Show With Trevor Noah: What To Expect When You’re Expectant bowson July 25. The Daily Show also announced first-of-their-kind digital partnerships with SiriusXM, Amazon and Snapchat.

TV One’s News One Now is airing a live two-hour special this morning from 7a-9a, with a 12a-2a encore. “Black and Blue America: The Race Crisis,” hosted by Roland Martin, will cover the Black Lives Matter movement, community policing and strategies to eradicate police brutality.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

The season two premiere of E!’s Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry has been moved up, from August 17 to Wednesday, August 10 at 8p. Special Hollywood Medium: Tyler’s Top Ten airs Wednesday, August 3 at 8p. The reality show debuted in early 2016 as E!’s most-watched unscripted series in three years, excluding spinoffs.

CASTING

Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) will star opposite Ewan McGregor in season three of FX anthology series Fargo. Coon will play the newly divorced chief of the Eden Valley police. Series returns in 2017.

Jennifer Esposito (Blue Bloods) has joined the cast of CBS’s NCIS as a series regular. Esposito will play an NCIS special agent in the long-running procedural, returning Tuesday, September 20 at 8p.

DIGITAL DOINGS

CBS News and Twitter are teaming for live coverage of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. CBSN, CBS News’ digital streaming news service, will present wall-to-wall convention coverage; the stream will be live on Twitter, enhanced with live, convention-related Tweets. Twitter and CBS News aren’t strangers – they partnered during CBS’s broadcast of the Democratic presidential debate on Nov. 14 and the Republican presidential debate on Feb. 13.

ADVERTISING

Responding the recent controversial ANA report about transparency in the media industry, consultant Accenture issued recommendations to address the issue in "Optimizing Transparency in Your Agency Relationships." Steps include formalizing the process for a contract compliance review, establishing a formal business relationship assessment, third party financial invoice audits, employing media performance benchmarking and an assessment of the media landscape that includes digital and social media as well as broadcast. “While the mechanisms may be complex,” said the report, “the underlying principles of trust and transparency are simple – and should never be compromised.”

The turmoil in Rio won’t hurt brands advertising in the Summer Olympics on NBC, according to a consumer insight study from research firm Kelton Global. 65 percent of Americans are excited about the Games, Kelton found, and 78 percent hope to catch at least some of the action. Nearly one in five respondents said they’re more likely to purchase products or services from companies that advertise on TV during the Olympics, and Millennials are 55 percent more likely to be excited than older generations (61 percent versus 39 percent) about Rio. Happily, only 3 percent of Americans would rather visit North Korea than Rio this summer, according to the e-mail and online study.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

UK cable company Virgin Media has struck a deal with ITV to buy UTV Ireland for $11.1 million. “This is a very positive development for Irish broadcasting and ensures Virgin Media’s continued investment in top-quality programming and local production,” said Tony Hanway, CEO of Virgin Media Ireland. UTV, which airs in Northern Ireland, is not part of the package.

SET Networks Africa acquired 6 seasons and 10 special episodes of GRB’s Untold Stories of the E.R. Viacom Africa picked up Ain’t That America and comedy series Bloopers, and AMC Networks grabbed automotive series Jet Truck for pan-European, Middle East and African viewers.

All3Media signed over 180 hours of factual programming to broadcasters in Central and Eastern Europe. Included is Russian pay-TV broadcasters First HDTV, for North One Television’s Speed With Guy Martin and season three of Gadget Man, among others.

Keshet International sold reality show Walk of Shame Shuttle to Australia’s SBS 2. Series was originally commissioned by VH1.

HBO and China’s China Movie Channel are co-producing martial arts TV movies, the first two of which, Master of the Drunken Fist: Beggar So and Master of the Shadowless Kick: Wong Kei-Ying will be exec produced by action director Corey Yuen (X-Men). “Through this partnership, we hope to exchange knowledge and know-how in the production of original content, and together with HBO Asia, introduce the essence of our culture through martial arts  one of the most iconic representations of the Chinese heritage,” said Cao Yin, president of China Movie Channel.

NBC was tops in viewers and the A18-49 demo on Sunday with coverage of the U.S. Olympics trials for track and field and gymnastics. While track earned a 1.0 rating among A18-49 and 4.3 million total viewers at 7p and 1.7/6.5 million at 8p, the first full hour of gymnastics vaulted to 2.5/8.5 million at 9p and 2.7/8.9 million at 10p..

Univision Deportes announced it ranked as the number one cable sports network in primetime among A18-49, 18-34, M18-49 and M8-34 for the month of June. “This is a milestone for Univision,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, net president. “These stellar ratings underscore the relevance of our best-in-class soccer content and the power of Hispanic sports fans as viewers and consumers of the sport.”

The premiere of Disney Channel’s Adventures in Babysitting ranked as the number one cable telecast of 2016 among kids and tweens and the number one cable TV movie of 2016 in total viewers. In Live+7, the movie increased 55 percent among Kids 6-11 (1.9 million/8.2 rating), 54 percent among Kids 2-11 (2.4 million/6.0), 44 percent among Tweens  9-14 (1.7 million/7.1), 36 percent among A18-49 (1.3 million) and 41 percent in total viewers (4.8 million), compared to Live+SD data.
