A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL
NOMINATED FOR 18 EMMY AWARDS!
The most in network history!
NGC’s scripted original movie, Killing Kennedy, received three noms including Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Cinematography.

Also listed were 12 honors with sister network, FOX, for Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.

Thanks to all of our partners for making it happen… we couldn’t be happier!

HBO‘s Game of Thrones scored the most primetime Emmy nods on Thursday, with 19. FX‘s Fargo got 18 bids and American Horror Story: Coven earned 17; HBO AIDS drama The Normal Heart and the final season of AMC‘s Breaking Bad each landed 16. HBO was the network winner with 99 nominations, versus 47 for CBS, 46 for NBC and 45 for FX.

Outstanding Drama nominees are:
Breaking Bad (AMC)
Downton Abbey (PBS)
Game of Thrones (HBO)
House of Cards (Netflix)
Mad Men (AMC)
True Detective (HBO)

Up for Outstanding Comedy:

here. Emmys air on NBC Monday, August 25 at 8p.

IN THE NEWS

Emmy bragging rights: Nets that landed the most nominations ever include Lifetime (17), Nat Geo (12), Starz (11) and IFC (8). AMC is the first cable network to have two series nominees in the same category (Mad Men and Breaking Bad), and Showtime boasts the most actor nominations in major categories (11). FX notched 45 noms, a basic cable record, while SundanceTV grabbed its first nomination ever in the Information Series or Special category, for The Writers’ Room. Last but not least: President Obama is the first sitting President to (sort of) earn a nomination – his Funny or Die video with Zach Galifianakis, Between Two Ferns, is up for Outstanding Short-Form Live-Action Entertainment Program.

Fox announced premiere dates for the fall season, starting with a three-night launch for "social experiment" Utopia on Sunday, September 7, Tuesday, September 9 and Friday, September 12. Also on the way:
Hell’s Kitchen: Wednesday, September 10
New Girl and The Mindy Project: Tuesday, September 16
Red Band Society: Wednesday, September 17
Gotham and Sleepy Hollow: Monday, September 22
Bones: Thursday, September 25
The Simpsons, Family Guy and Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Sunday, September 28
Gracepoint: Thursday, October 2
Bob’s Burgers, Mulaney: Sunday, October 5
MasterChef Junior: Friday, November 7

ABC confirmed via Twitter that Rosie O’Donnell will return to The View for season 18. O’Donnell, who moderated the daytime talker from 2006-2007, joins Whoopi Goldberg. Meghan McCain, currently on Pivot‘s Take Part Live and scheduled to guest host The View on Monday, July 14, is reportedly being considered for one of the empty seats left by departing Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd.

Discovery Fit & Health is getting a new name and logo in January, but don’t call it a rebrand. "The name Discovery Fit & Health limited us," Jane Latman, the net’s GM, tells Cynopsis. "Discovery Life Channel is an invitation to expand the brand and give viewers even more of the content that they love. The network is all about life’s unexpected moments  the drama, the vulnerability and the triumphs." The net has over 10 new series and specials in development, including relationship show Families on the Brink, Ripped Kids, about pre-teens in strength competitions, and Tales from the Maternity Ward.

Aereo‘s not quitting yet. Reacting to the Supreme Court’s ruling in June that the streaming service was infringing on broadcasters’ copyright, Aereo maintained in a letter to U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan that it is a cable company, eligible for a statutory license. Its argument: the Supreme Court described Aereo’s services as "for all intents and purposes a traditional cable system." Broadcasters called foul, labeling the move "astonishing" given the fact that Aereo claimed in the court case that it could not quality as a cable system. Fellow antenna-based streamer FilmOn recently registered with the U.S. copyright office as at cable company, based on the ruling.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

As part of its brand refresh – which includes a tweaked logo - TruTV gave the green light to four new unscripted series, all in line with its call earlier this year for "funseekers." "Reality musical" Branson Famous (wt), comedic Hack My Life, kart racing docu-series Kart Life and bar competition The Shake Up are slated for this fall and winter debuts.

BBC America will co-produce new series Tatou, a drama about a mysterious tattoo, with Touchpaper TV and South Pacific Pictures. Filming starts in September.

Lifetime ordered drama pilot Clan of the Cave Bear, exec produced by Ron Howard (Rush) and Brian Grazer (24). A co-production of Fox 21 and Lionsgate in association with Imagine Television and Allison Shearmur Productions, the project is based on the novels by Jean M. Auel.

Syfy gave the green light for a pilot for The Magicians, an adaptation of Lev Grossman‘s fantasy book series. The one-hour drama from Universal Cable Productions will focus on 20-somethings who stumble upon a dangerous fantasy world.

Glee‘s sixth and final season has been chopped from 22 episodes to 13. No surprise: then-Fox Broadcasting president Kevin Reilly said in May that the low-rated show could end with a shorter season, and the show was left off the fall schedule.

COMING UP

Cooking‘s Chuck’s Eat the Street, airing Thursdays at 10p, has host Chuck Hughes cross-crossing the country checking out the local food scene. Next stop: Phoenix, where the culinary adventurer finds a beef burger sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches, cactus-filled veggie tacos and a side dish made from yam flour.

HBO will air a special featuring footage culled from September 12 and 13 "On the Run Tour: Beyonce and Jay Z" concerts. "It’s going to be a night to remember," said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming. The music royalty clearly feel at home on HBO: Beyonce is currently appearing in Beyonce: X10 segments on the premium cabler, and her documentary, Life Is But a Dream aired in 2013, along with Jay Z’s Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film.

Season one of WGN‘s Salem winds up Sunday, July 13 at 10p. The psychological thriller ends its freshman run with "sinister secrets" that set up season two, launching in spring 2015.

RETURNING SERIES

BBC America is bringing back Orphan Black for a third season and Broadchurch for a sophomore run in 2015. Orphan’s season two was the net’s second highest-rated series ever among A25-54 in Live+3 and Live+7, behind Dr. Who‘s season seven.

El Rey picked up Matador for a second season, ahead of the thriller’s series debut Tuesday, July 15 at 9p. A sneak peek will be available on digital platforms including iTunes, Vudu and Xbox 360 starting July 8.

Please take a moment to participate in Cynopsis Media’s first Salary Survey, to help us provide you and your industry colleagues with a trustworthy benchmark for salaries and benefits in TV and digital media. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/cynsalary. Deadline is July 17.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

While four World Cup ads make Unruly Media‘s list of most shared ads of 2014, just one Super Bowl spot (puppy love!) made the cut. By Unruly’s math, the top 40 World Cup ads were shared an average of 320,000 times each, versus 126,000 times for the Super Bowl.
