What prompted independent cable channel Reelz to grab the rights to the 2015 Miss USA Pageant, dropped by NBC and Univision’s UniMas following derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants made by Donald Trump? Aside from a fire sale price, “I think we did the right thing by stepping up to this,” CEO Stan E. Hubbard tells Cynopsis. “The city of Baton Rouge and the state of Louisiana put up a lot of money to hold this pageant, and all the women who have been looking forward to competing shouldn’t have to pay a price for a political controversy.” As for advertisers, “Just having 11 days notice is tough anyway. As we’ve been reaching out to brands and agencies we hear they applaud what we’re doing, but are wary of taking a chance with their brands. We knew going in we might have no advertising. But it’s live, and it’s big and there aren’t too many iconic TV events that are available for an independent network like ours. We’re not kidding ourselves thinking we’ll have the viewership NBC would have had, but I think we’ll have good viewership.” Hubbard has distanced himself from Trump, calling the presidential candidate’s remarks “insensitive and wrong,” but notes, “controversy opens up opportunities. There may be more attention paid to this pageant than there has been for decades.” Pageant is set to air Sunday, July 12.

IN THE NEWS

NBC canceled A.D.: The Bible Continues after a freshman run that averaged 6.5 million viewers and 1.0 among A18-49, but the story’s not over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have plans to continue the show on their upcoming faith-focused OTT channel, slated for launch in late 2015 or 2016.

A+E Networks announced the launch of Lifetime Movie Cub, the company’s first SVOD service. For $3.99/month, subscribers will have access to a library of 30 Lifetime films, refreshed weekly, without commercial interruption, available exclusively on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch at launch. Why go the sub route? “The decision to launch was based off of the overwhelming success we have had in streaming Lifetime movies on an ad-supported basis,” Dan Suratt, EVP digital A+E Networks, tells Cynopsis. “We believe this property will stand out among other services based on its rich library and how Lifetime movies have along-standing place in people’s hearts.”

Out of the top 20 ad-supported cable networks, only 5 saw viewership gains in 2Q15 versus the year before. And the winners are: Discovery, rising 16 percent to 1.49 million; HGTV, with a 13 percent lift to 1.49 million; ID, up 8 percent to 873,000; Food Network, growing 5 percent to 1.0 million and Fox News, with a 2 percent boost to hit 1.6 million.

On Thursday, Univision Communications filed for an initial public offering, and announced an expansion of its licensing agreement with Mexican media company Televisa, through “at least 2030” if the IPO plans are enacted. In 2014, the company generated $2.9 billion in revenue with a net income of $900,000; in addition to broadcast networks Univision and UniMas, Univision Communications has nine cable networks and 60 TV stations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Now that Reelz has picked up the Miss USA Pageant, is it safe for brands to enter the advertising waters? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

Showtime is offering the season three premieres of Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex across multiple platforms ahead of their linear launches on Sunday, July 12 at 9p. Viewers can sample the series free on YouTube and SHO.com, as well as select providers’ On Demand channels and web sites.

Chasing Life, moved from an August 17 premiere to tonight, July 6, will also change timeslots. The ABC Family drama takes over the 9p spot where critically acclaimed Becoming Us has been drawing soft numbers (down from 638,000 and .2 among A18-49 for its debut); the transgender docu-series slides to 10p.

Law & Order will air dubbed in Spanish for the first time in the U.S. on NBC Universo starting today, and Law & Order: Los Angeles beginning tomorrow. L&O takes up the cable net’s Monday-Thursday slot with back-to-back eps at 5p, while L&O: LA is slated for Tuesdays at 9p.

A cross-platform partnership between National Geographic, the New Zealand Antarctic Research Institute and Antarctica New Zealand documenting the men and women working on the frontiers of science at New Zealand’s Scott Base, Antarctica includes an upcoming global television series for Nat Geo. “We are all about bringing our viewers a real look inside places most will never go,” said Tim Pastore, president, original programming and production for Nat Geo. “Our series will document the incredible feats that take place on a daily basis on the least explored continent in the world.”

Why binge? In TiVo’s annual binge behavior study, 61 percent of those surveyed say they binge three or more episodes of the same show in one day because they fell behind; 45 percent say they learned about a show after many episodes had already aired and they needed to catch up, and 39 percent say some shows are just better when watched back to back.

Sonia Manzano is moving off of Sesame Street. Manzano, who played Maria on the PBS children’s show for 44 years as well as serving as a writer, is retiring. Thanking her supporters, Manzano tweeted, “Don’t be bummed!”.

Ovation TV acquired US broadcast rights to arts-and-culture-centric documentaries and series including UK series A Place in the Sun: Winter Sun from Orange Smarty, docs Let the Scream Be Heard and Stealing History from Nordic World and docu-series Antiques Road Trip from Red Arrow. Programs will debut on Ovation TV this month.

Animal advocate Betty White is set to host Discovery Family summer stunt “Pawgust,” showcasing animal-themed series, specials and movies starting Saturday August 1 at 8p with 101 Dalmations. Pawgust is anchored by the net’s first original series, From Wags to Riches With Bill Berloni, launching Thursday, August 6 at 9p.

Busy Betty White has also been tapped to serve as a panelist in ABC’s To Tell the Truth reboot, along with NeNe Leakes (Real Housewives of Atlanta). White’s no amateur – she was on the game show’s original panel in 1961.
