Lionsgate, producer of Starz series Outlander and Power, has agreed to acquire Starz for $4.4 billion. And Starz CEO Chris Albrecht, whose contract with the pay cable net was recently extended through 2020, is along for the ride. “This transaction unites two companies with strong brands, complementary assets and leading positions within our industry,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer and Vice Chairman Michael Burns in a statement. “We expect the acquisition to be highly accretive, generate significant synergies and create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Chris Albrecht and his team have built a world-class platform and programming leader, and we’re proud to marshal our resources in a deal that accelerates our growth and diversification, generates exciting new strategic content opportunities and creates significant value for our shareholders.” Concurred Albrecht in a conference call on Thursday, “I think the opportunities are enormous.”

NBC is airing original half-hour episodes of Superstore and The Voice on Friday, August 19 and Sunday, August 21 (the night of the Olympics Closing Ceremony), respectively, beginning at 10:30p following Olympics coverage.Superstore will have an Olympics theme, while Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus will make their coaching debuts on The Voice. “The Olympics give us a unique chance to expose some of our strongest shows to millions of viewers who might not otherwise see them,” said NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt. “Much appreciation to Mark Lazarus and our sports division who bring us the gift of the Olympics every two years.”

The host of Nancy Grace is leaving HLN this fall “with a full heart and endless gratitude.” After almost 12 years at HLN, what’s next for the outspoken former prosecutor? “I will continue my fight for justice across a variety of traditional and new media,” said Grace, “where victims’ voices can reach an entirely engaged audience.”

Adnan Syed, convicted and sentenced to life in prison for killing his former girlfriend in 1999, has been granted a new trial by a Maryland judge. The case was the subject of the popular Serial podcast. “The court finds that trial counsel’s performance fell below the standard of reasonable professional judgment when she failed to cross-examine the state’s cell tower expert regarding a disclaimer obtained as part of pre-trial discovery,” wrote the judge. ID’s June 14 special, Adnan Syed: Innocent or Guilty?, explored new evidence brought to light by Serial and others.

CNN’s brand studio Courageous is producing a one-day event at the Paley Center for Media to explore the current state of human augmentation. “Since the launch of Courageous, we have been committed to pioneering the evolution of branded content to help brands tell more powerful stories,” said Otto Bell, VP and group creative director of Courageous. “We’ve assembled a group of thought-leaders across the fields of science, technology, ethics, and cyborg activism who, for the first time, will come together to discuss the cutting-edge technologies and innovations that are shaping human augmentation.” Square Enix is partnering on the event to support the release of “Deus Ex: Mankind Divided,” a video game that features mechanically augmented humans segregated from society. The conference, “Human by Design,” takes place August 3 in NYC.

College undergrads will stay in ’toon at Cartoon Network Studios’ first animation jam, July 9-11 in Burbank. Invited students will create an original 15-second animation short based on the immersive world of O.K. KO! Let’s Be Heroes. Cartoon Network Studios will provide the necessary production tools alongside a crew of animation mentors.

CMT documentary The Bandit, about the making of 1977 Burt Reynolds hit Smokey and the Bandit, has its TV bow Saturday, August 6 at 10p. The film premiered at SXSW.

Bad Dad Rehab, the TV One original film written by ABFF TV One Screenplay Competition winner Kiki McKnight, premieres Sunday, July 3 at 7p. The movie focuses on four men in denial about their poor parenting skills – and viewers might do well to grab a hankie. “The thing that has moved me the most about this film is seeing the reaction from the audiences. We’ve done multiple screenings for large audiences and through the laughter, tears and deeply impactful emotional moments, men and women are transforming right in front of your eyes,” lead actor Malik Yoba tells Cynopsis. “Sounds like a bold statement but what other movie can you say you’ve ever heard of or seen that deals with men and our daddy issues from multiple perspectives? I keep witnessing grown men cry and declare this is a movie they have to share with as many people as possible. Mission Accomplished.”

Revolt recaps the fourth annual Broccoli City Festival in special Broccoli City 2016, airing Monday, July 4 at 10p. Revolt was music sponsor of the daylong April event in D.C.

A Fourth of July marathon of patriotic programming launches on American Heroes Channel at 11a with Patriots Rising: The American Revolution, followed by The Revolutionary War. On Sunday, July 10 at 7p, the net presents classic 1957 military movie, The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Gene Hackman will narrate Smithsonian Channel’s The Unknown Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima, airing Sunday, July 3 at 9p. Oscar winner Hackman enlisted in the Marines at age 17 in 1947 and served four years as a field radio operator before going on to Hollywood fame.

Maya Rudolph and Martin Short are joined by fellow Saturday Night Live alums Will Forte and Amy Poehler, along with Jerry Seinfeld, on Maya & Marty Tuesday, July 5 at 10p.

“Ghostbusters Week” on Destination America will feature five nights of paranormal programming, starting Sunday, July 10 at 8p with two encores and then an all-new episode of Ghosts of Shepherdstown. The rest of the week is filled out with eps of Ghost Brothers, Ghost Asylum and Paranormal Lockdown.

National independent public satellite television network Link TV is airing a special 60-minute edition of The Laura Flanders Show focused on violence against women. In Laura Flanders:Bodies in Revolution, human rights workers share strategies and tactics for combating violence at the state, national and domestic level, on Tuesday, July 19 at 8p.

Fourteen of Norman Lear’s favorite episodes from his classic TV series make up an Antenna TV marathon on Sunday, July 3 from 3p-10p. Shows plucked from the vault include eps of All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, One Day at a Time and The Jeffersons.

NEW SERIES

OWN drama Queen Sugar, focused on a woman who returns to her family home in Louisiana after living in upscale LA, debuts with a two-night event on Tuesday, September 6 and Wednesday, September 7 at 10p. All episodes in the first season of the series from filmmaker Ava DuVernay will be directed by women.

Basketball Wives star Shaunie O’Neal gets a shot at her own series with Shaunie’s Home Court, premiering on VH1 Sunday, July 17 at 10:30p. Half hour comedic unscripted series follows the mom of five as she works to keep her brood in line.

Who knew sticky rice was used to build the Great Wall of China? Science Channel blends scientific investigation with CGI animation to reveal hidden secrets of some of the greatest wonders of the world in Unearthed, bowing Tuesday, July 5 at 10p.

RETURNING SERIES

When AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire returns for season three, action moves from Texas to Silicon Valley, circa 1986. Premiere date is Tuesday, August 23 at 9p with back-to-back episodes; regular Tuesday-at-10p timeslot starts August 30.

Dr. Dee: Alaska Vet is back treating reindeer, moose and more on the Animal Planet reality show, starting its sophomore run Saturday, July 16 at 8p.

Season two of Bounce TV comedy In The Cut launches Tuesday, July 5 at 9p. As it did with Saints & Sinners and Mann & Wife, Bounce is offering the HD series premiere episode of In The Cut to network affiliates for airing on their primary channel between July 6-11.

Viewers can sample the complete first season of Starz’ Power for free, now through the season three premiere on Sunday, July 17 at 9p. Episodes are available on Starz.com as well as via linear, on-demand and/or online through select U.S. cable, satellite and telco affiliates.

TLC’s My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding returns for a fifth season on Sunday, July 17 at 10p. First up: a bride-to-be who dreams of a dress made out of real flowers.

DIGITAL DOINGS

A Lost in Space reboot has found a home, with a straight-to-series, 10-episode order from Netflix. Expect a mix of old and new in the Legendary TV project, based on the 1965-1968 show about a space colony family thrown off course. “The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience,” said Cindy Holland, VPOriginal Content at the streaming service. “The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”

Sling TV’s multi-stream service, dubbed Sling Blue, is being taken out of beta and adding NBCUni channels Bravo, USA, Syfy and NBC Sports, as well as NBC owned and operated stations. For a $5/month add-on, E!, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, Golf and NBCUniverso will also be available. Fox was already onboard and ABC is available as an add-on.

NBCUniversal plans to stream 85 hours of Rio Olympics coverage in virtual reality, including opening and closing ceremonies. The VR programming will be released on a time delay, available to authenticated pay-TV users with Samsung Galaxy smartphones and Samsung Gear VR headsets. Samsung is the net’s “smartphone partner” for the Games.

CASTING

Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere are onboard season five of Nashville, reports TVLine. CMT picked up the country music drama after it was canceled by ABC. Charles Esten, Sam Palladio, Jonathan Jackson, Clare Bowen, Lennon Stella, Maisy Stella and Chris Carmack will also be back.

Tara Buck (True Blood) landed a recurring role on season four of Showtime’s Ray Donovan, as a no-nonsense patrol cop. Drama airs Sundays at 9p.

Kellita Smith (The Bernie Mac Show) has joined the cast of Bounce TV’s In the Cut, back for season two Tuesday, July 5 at 9p.

The NBCU Content Studio and SabraDipping Company are teaming for a cross-portfolio partnership, Content Studio’s first major partnership since its formation in March as a developer, producer and distributor of original content on behalf of brands. The satirical campaign, inspired by culinary how-to videos and conceptualized and created by NBCUniversal, will drive awareness for Sabra’s Veggie Fusion Guacamole line. The campaign will run across social and digital networks including the NBCUniversal and Vox Media portfolios of digital properties through the two companies’ joint Concert offering, anchored by content running on the social pages of Bravo, E! and Today. “Working collaboratively with an innovative, new brand partner like Sabra, allowed us to experiment and create a new type of storyline that taps into the cultural food zeitgeist,”said Wendy Wildfeuer, SVP, The NBCU Content Studio.“We leaned into our proprietary insights, storytelling and production expertise, and contextually aligned networks in our portfolio to build a new Sabra content platform.”

NBA sponsorship spending rose 8 percent in the 2015-2016 season, to nearly $800 million, according to IEG research. State Farm was the most active, followed by Anheuser-Busch, Adidas, Gatorade and FanDuel. By category, insurance was the most active, according to IEG, followed by quick-service restaurants, travel, non-alcoholic beverages and medical.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

The Late Late Show With James Corden is headed for the UK and Ireland. Sky TV and NOW TV entertainment pass customers will have access to next-day episodes starting July 19. Sky 1 is also airing the Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special.

Discovery Networks International renewed Body Bizarre for a fourth season, to premiere on DNI nets in more than 220 countries and territories beginning in late July. Series focuses on people with rare medical conditions.

Federation Entertainment struck a deal with Belgian distributor Ella Productions and Left Field Ventures for cybercrime series Unit 42.Federation has worldwide distribution rights, while Ella retains rights for Benelux and France.

Keshet International format Rising Star has been licensed by new Cambodian broadcaster Town TV, a free-to-air channel launching in late 2016/early 2017. Reality show will be produced in-house by Town TV.

Science Channel delivered its highest rated second quarter ever among Adults/Men/Women 25-54 in 2Q16 with year-over-year ratings growth among A25-54 and Adults/Men/Women 18-49 in L+3. The network has now delivered three consecutive quarters (4Q15, 1Q16, 2Q16) of year-over-year ratings growth among Adults 25-54 and Adults/Men/Women 18-49, no exclusions. The net also had its highest rated June on record among Total Viewers P2+, Adults/Men/Women 25-54 and Adults/Women 18-49 in Total Day. NASA’s Unexplained Files was the top performing series for the quarter with the full season averaging 712,000 Total Viewers P2+, 93 percent above Science Channel’s year-to-date Prime Time average.

CBS This Morning posted its best total viewer and key demo ratings since the show launched, delivering the network’s highest 2Q viewership in the time period in at least 28-years (since the advent of Nielsen people meters) and its best A25-54 rating since 2009. The show grew by 6 percent in viewers, 13 percent in A25-54, 11 percent in W25-54 and 17 percent in W18-49.

In 2Q16, Bounce TV grew its Primetime audience by 19 percent among P18-49, 23 percent in W18-49 and P25-54 and 27 percent in W25-54.Double digit gains in Total Day included 15 percent in P18-49, 16 percent in W18-49, 21 percent in P25-54 and 27 percent in W25-54.
