CYNOPSISDIGITAL
06.29.16
Good morning. It’s Wednesday June 29, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
TODAY’S CODEBREAKER
Stitching: In virtual reality, Stitching is the process of taking footage from different cameras that have been used in a 360-degre camera mount, and then combining that footage into spherical video. The stitching process leaves a VR video looking like it’s one continuous view, rather than an assembly of different angles.
TOP NEWS
Two weeks after acquiring LinkedIn for over $26 billion, Microsoft is wasting no time in upping monetization efforts for the professional networking site. LinkedIn will now offer programmatic buying for LinkedIn Display Ads. The offering comes on the heels of a programmatic advertising pilot program, which launched on LinkedIn in Q3 of 2015.
You get the feeling that even Twitter was chafing under the constraints of a 6-second limit. It’s been a week since the company upped Vine’s max video length, and already some professional-grade longer-form content is making its way to the platform. Vine has debuted Camp Unplug, its first long-form original series. Located at the top of Vine’s Explore tab, the series stars well-known Vine stars such as Cody Ko and Mikaela Long. As Cynopsis Digital noted yesterday, Adult Swim has also gotten in on the act, debuting a full episode of its nonsensically-titled animated series Brad Neely’s Harg Nallin Sclopio Peepio. While Twitter hasn’t framed it in these terms, the reality is that changing up Vine’s format was something of an emergency. Recent reports had indicated that influencers have been abandoning Vine by the bucketload, opting for less restrictive platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, and YouTube.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
The Weather Channel’s got an extremely cool way of bringing hurricane season to life for viewers. The network has launched three new augmented reality products that it will use when a hurricane or tropical storm is broadcast: Surge FX, which brings to life a realistic 2 scale surge forecast on-screen; Shear Factor, which shows real data in three dimensions; and Tropical Replay, a 3D visualization tool in which the data from tracks of past storms will inform a current storm’s future path.
Speaking of which, Jeremy Jones, The Weather Channel’s Head of Product & Innovation, will discuss the state of on-air AR during the Cynopsis webinar, How to Monetize Virtual and Augmented Reality. Also joining the panel are National Geographic’s Matt Zymet, IBB Consulting Group’s Jefferson Wang and Virtually Live’s Jeff Goldberg. Be sure to join us on July 21 to learn valuable tips and monetization strategies. More info here: http://www.cynopsis.com/webinar/monetize-virtual-reality/
MEASUREMENT
The social media analytics firm Shareablee announced a new partnership with KFMB. Under the pact, KFMB will use Shareablee’s audience insights for its TV and radio stations. “Social is an extremely important component of our digital strategy for all of our stations,” said Mitch Gruber, Director of KFMB Interactive, in a release. “We want to reach our audience through every platform and screen, and our social channels are where many people start their search.”
OTT + SVOD
Rooster Teeth, the Fullscreen Media-owned digital studio focused on gamers and sci-fi fans, has had an SVOD service since 2003. (Bet you didn’t know SVOD services have even existed that long.) Now, Rooster Teeth is rebranding the $4.99-per-month service under a new name: First. The company aims to add more mainstream content and appeal to a wider audience. As it stands, the Rooster Teeth Service has 130,000 (Rooster Teeth calls them “sponsors”). But the company thinks that number should be higher. “We realized this SVOD thing was bigger and broader, and we could take it to more people, wider beyond our core demographic,” said CEO Matt Hullum. By the way, if you’re a die-hard Rooster Teeth fan, and you’re willing to spend $34.99 per month on the new First Double Gold package, you’ll get VIP access to Rooster Teeth’s event, as well as a monthly shipment of merchandise. First will begin rolling out its apps this fall; the first Double Gold merchandise box will ship out to subs on August 15.

RESEARCH
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirstDigital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
Streaming Series (6/20/16 – 6/26/16)
Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
To determine the TV ads generating the most digital response, iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Below, take a look at the brands that backed the BET Awards.
“Keep ya head up”
Clips of Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams delivering a powerful speech at Sunday’s BET Awards continue to ricochet around social and traditional media. The high-profile tentpole program was sure to drive a lot of chatter given the talent taking the stage throughout the night (Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar), but it was Williams who “Stole the BET Awards With [His] Speech on Racism,” as The New York Times put it. The award that Williams accepted is actually properly known as the “BET Humanitarian Award presented by State Farm,” which gives you a sense of just how much big brands have embraced the BET Awards. The biggest backers of the telecast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles were Sony Pictures, Verizon, Universal Pictures, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s, ranked by estimated spend.
But the brands with the most digital response spoke directly to the BET audience, including Sprite, which ran a spot promoting its limited-edition "Crisp and Cool Lyrical Collection" cans emblazoned with lyrics from songs by Tupac Shakur ("Keep ya head up") and other icons, as well as a moving ad titled Break the Walls by SheaMoisture that points out that its products are no longer confined to the “ethnic” section of stores but can now be found in the larger “beauty” aisle. Check out a full breakdown below.
According to a forecast from eMarketer, programmatic TV spending will increase by an enormous 127.8% this year, hitting $710 million total. Still, programmatic TV has a ways to go: That $710 million total represents only 1% of all TV spending. But eMarkter projects extremely rapid growth in the space, predicting that Programmatic TV spend will grow to $2.16 billion in 2017, and $4.43 billion in 2018.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Twitter just signaled that it’s jumping into virtual and augmented reality in a big way. As first reported by UploadVR, the company has hired Alessandro Sabatelli as Director of AR and VR. Sabatelli will lead an augmented reality team within Twitter Cortex, the company’s division focused on AI and machine learning. Twitter isn’t quite new to VR; the company reached an ad-supported deal earlier this month, running 360-degree video clips with Samsung during the NBA Finals. Sabatelli most recently served as CEO of IXOMOXI, a startup focused on music VR experiences. He also served as an app and interface designer at Apple between 2009 and 2015.
CBS Interactive’s Marc DeBevoise is getting a new promotion. Formerly the EVP and General Manager of CBS Digital Media, DeBevoise will now serve as CBSI’s President and Chief Operating Officer. He takes over for CBSI CEO Jim Lanzone, who was recently promoted to Chief Digital Officer at CBS. CBS Corp.’s recent executive moves come as the company prepares to launch into uncharted digital territory. Next year, the CBS All Access SVOD service will begin debuting digital-exclusive shows, including a Star Trek series and a spinoff of The Good Wife.
Adelphic, a mobile and cross-channel demand-side platform, announced a new hire. Jacqueline Berg will serve as General Manager of the Americas. She’ll be tasked with expanding Adelphic’s partnerships with current and future clients in the Americas. Berg previously spent a decade working within Google’s DoubleClick, most recently as Head of Sales and Strategy for the publisher business group.
The Australian arm of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has named a new top dingo. Vijay Solanki will serve as CEO of IAB Australia. He’ll assume is new role at the trade group this August. Solanki most recently served as Chief Digital Officer at Southern Cross Austereo.

Answer to Our Last Trivia Question: Between those that have begun airing and those that are still in development, how many original series taking place in the Marvel universe has Netflix greenlighted? Answer: Six. Daredevil and Jessica Jones are currently airing, while four future projects have been confirmed: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher. Kudos to Michael Castillo – Univision/FL. (By the way, if you count Blade, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight – three projects that Netflix is rumored to be considering – six could soon be nine. Kudos Matt Willence-ITN Networks/NY.)
