IN THE NEWS

CBS is close to closing the books on its upfront ad sales. With a few deals left to complete, total sales are likely to wind up at close to $2.5 billion, about 5 percent higher than last year, reports Deadline. This reverses three consecutive years of declines in total sales in the upfront market. Advertiser demand for CBS’ evening newscast and CBS This Morning was especially strong.

Meanwhile, Variety reports that The CW expects to finish its upfront sales process with as much as a 12 to 14 percent increase in volume of advance advertising commitments, according to a person familiar with the situation. The network secured between $425.6 million and $458.9 million in commitments.

Dance Moms host Abby Lee Miller pleaded guilty yesterday to federal bankruptcy fraud charges. Miller had been accused of trying to hide $775,000 in income during her Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and sneaking cash into the U.S. from Australia in her group’s luggage to avoid reporting the money. Miller’s lawyers asked for a maximum sentence of six months in jail; she could face 24-30 months. Sentencing is scheduled for October 11.

The Weather Channel and congressional representatives from around the country have joined forces to emphasize the importance of severe weather preparedness to local communities. Locally targeted PSAs began airing on Monday. Among the 17 members involved in the initial campaign were Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Sen. Tim Kaine and Sen. Tim Scott.

Good news! You still have time to submit your entries for the Rising Star Awards. Late entries will be accepted until 11:59 PM ET on Friday, 7/1. The clock is ticking so hurry up and finish your entries.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Freeform greenlit Baby Daddy for a sixth season, which will take the series to 100 episodes. The pickup comes on the heels of strong ratings for the back-half of its fifth season, growing week-to-week to near one-year ratings highs in key target demos.

SundanceTV has renewed Hap and Leonard. Series star James Purefoy confirmed the news on Twitter, noting that the show has been officially picked up for a second season.  The show, which debuted in March 2, is the network’s highest-rated original series. Season one averaged 456,000 viewers in Live+3 and 147,000 in A18-49 demo.

USA Network issued a pilot order for Damnation. Created by Tony Tost (Longmire), the 1930-set drama focuses on a man masquerading as a small-town preacher in Iowa who aims to launch an insurrection against the status quo, but runs up against an industrialist tycoon with whom he shares a bloody past.

COMING UP

Travel Channel’s new series of specials, Celebrity Adventure Club, premieres Friday, July 1 at 11p. Each segment follows a celebrity as they embark on an intimate adventure of discovery and exploration. In the premiere, avid space enthusiast Jon Cryer heads off on a journey that tops his bucket list, suiting up for a trip to the global hubs of all space activity: Washington, D.C., Houston and Russia.

AMC is airing a marathon of Preacher beginning Thursday, June 30 at 9p. Viewers who need to catch up on the action can watch the show’s first five episodes as well as bonus behind-the-scenes footage. The series’ new sixth episode airs Sunday, July 3 at 9p.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Outdoor Channel premieres travel and outdoor adventure series Nick’s Wild Ride on Friday, July 1 at 7:30p. Show follows host Nick Hoffman, a member of country music trio The Farm, on a journey into the food, culture, music, history and heartbeat of a location, while he hunts and fishes.

E!’s Total Bellas premieres Wednesday, October 5 at 8p. The new series exposes the lives of WWE superstars Nikki and Brie Bella and their fellas, John Cena and Daniel Bryan, as the foursome coexist under one roof for the first time.

CASTING

Megan Mullally is headed to Hulu’s sci-fi/fantasy anthology Dimension 404. She’ll play Director Stevens, a hardened, no-nonsense military commander. Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat) has been cast alongside Mullally as Jane, a military psychologist.

Matthew Goode (The Good Wife, Downton Abbey) is set to star in WGN America pilot Roadside Picnic. He plays Red, a veteran “stalker” who illegally ventures into the once inhabited zone of aliens on Earth and scavenges the remains of their culture.

Cheyenne Jackson, who played Will Drake on American Horror Story: Hotel, confirmed on Twitter that he will be back for the next chapter of the FX horror anthology series. The theme, title and full cast list for Season 6 has yet to be disclosed.

Sex and the City alum Jason Lewis, who appeared in the pilot of NBC midseason supernatural drama Midnight, Texas, has been upped to series regular.

Bethany Joy Lenz (One Tree Hill, Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) has been tapped to recur on CBS’ American Gothic. She’ll play April, a nurse at a rehab facility who develops a meaningful bond with one of the Hawthornes.

British actor Jules Knight is headed to Season 3 of E! drama The Royals. He’ll recur as Spencer Hoenigsberg, the new Lord Chamberlain to the Queen of England, according to TVLine.

BRANDING & ADVERTISING

A 30-second integrated promo, a collaboration between Discovery Channel and 2C Creative, gets Naked and Afraid with Carl’s Jr. The spot marries the reality series to its sponsor brand using the concept of bringing one carefully chosen survival item in your satchel: a juicy Carl’s Jr. Original Thickburger. It was dreamed up by the net’s integrated marketing team, led by VP, Branded Entertainment.

Bravo Media and Align Technology, Inc., the makers of the Invisalign clear aligner system, have announced a multi-platform partnership for the second season of Odd Mom Out. The deal includes on-air integrations featuring series star Jill Kargman wearing Invisalign clear aligners to straighten her teeth. Following the first episode placement, which aired on Monday, clear aligners will be featured three more times.

Thursday Night Football’s halftime show will be sponsored by Toyota Motor’s Lexus no matter which network the show airs on, reports Variety. This season it includes the NFL Network, CBS and NBC. Lexus is renewing a previous agreement, making it the halftime sponsor for a fifth season, but this is the first time it will have a presence across three different networks.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Siegfried & Roy will be the subject of a biographical miniseries directed by Philipp Stolzl (The Physician) for Germany’s UFA Fiction. The Las Vegas Legends will executive produce the story of their lives via their S&R Enterprises.

Amazon has reached a multi-territory content licensing agreement with Starz for The Girlfriend Experience, the limited series from EP Steven Soderbergh and inspired by his film of the same name. The show is now exclusively available on Amazon Prime Video in the U.K., Germany and Austria, and will begin streaming in Japan later this year.

AMC Global has acquired anthology drama The Terror, an adaption of the novel by Dan Simmons. Set in 1847, the series centers on a Royal Naval expedition crew searching for the Northwest Passage. Premieres exclusively on AMC Global in territories across Europe and Latin America in 2017 within minutes of broadcast on AMC in the U.S.

FOX drew a record 26 million views for the international premiere of Outcast across its linear broadcast, social media and online release.
